With the development of modern society people tend to show more about themselves. When it comes to whether we can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people, there are always a set of different opinions. Admittedly, we can see about people's attitudes and interests through their appearances and behavior in some perspectives, but we can not see them all.
Granted that, we can attain people's ideas and values through their appearances and behaviors in several aspects. French loves' kissing around streets have show us their romantic; German precise machines have shown us their preciseness; Chinese moral of respecting the old and loving the children has shown us their traditions; Arabian women's custom of veiling themselves has shown us women's prime stage in their society; American's casual attitudes has shown us their open mind.
However, people's appearances and behaviors do not accurately reveal people's ideas and values, sometimes they have not shown a relevant aspect of people's ideas and values which is completely opposite to we usually attain. As the modern society has become more and more complicated, people tend to conceal themselves in order to prevent being seen through. A millionaire may live a frugal lifestyle which can totally mislead us about his fortune. A dapper gentleman in suit may conflict actions which are not gentle at all, such as fraud. What' more, due to some excuses, people who wares uniforms also has concealed they characteristics. Government employees dress alike and speak alike to each other so that we can hardly tell ideas and values of a government employee through observing his/her appearances and behaviors.
Furthermore, people's ideas and values do not revealed themselves only through their appearances and behaviors. Observing on people's appearances and behaviors is a facile method. Some of people's ideas and values must be shown by some specific aspects rather than appearances and behaviors. Through talking, you can know how one communicate to you; through corporations, you can know one's working styles; through hanging along, you can know what this person values most. None of above can be facilely recognized by observing people's appearances and behaviors. Even assuming that people's ideas and values have shown themselves by appearance and behaviors, can we, the observers, able to catch them correctly? I may say that most of us, normal people, haven't got such ability. So encouragement of such observing form of know another person, may cause a lot of misunderstanding and mood of prejudice.
In sum, even though people's appearances and behaviors somehow have shown information of their ideas and values. Yet, we can not hastily conclude that observing people's appearances and behaviors is the only we need to know about people. Literally, we should adopt a comprehensive way to know people around us.
