"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Pros:
1. Famous historical figures are known as president or chairman, King or Queen, general or administrator. They make regulations and decisions which lead, sometimes force most ordinary people to behave correspondingly.
2. Explain the leading case.
3. Explain the forcing case. Chinese culture revolution.
Cons:
1. Significant events cannot happen without the help of groups of people whose names have been forgotten. Imagining a war without soldiers, a construction of palace without workers or a revolution without revolutionists.
2. The World War I and II will be impossible to occur if nobody marches to the battle filed with their weapons. Then the fighting will only between the few famous generals and presidents and the war won’t take too long to be over.
******************************************************************************
Admittedly, those whose identities have long been forgotten were fundamental to significant events. Without them, the effects of events would never be such great. However, it is those famous historical figures that motivated the events and led the trends. They sever more crucial function than the majority ordinary people.
First of all, significant events cannot happen without the participation of groups of ordinary people. Imagining a war without soldiers, a construction of palace without workers or a revolution without revolutionists, it is those people that complete all the subtle but necessary jobs. Among them are scientists, engineers, technicians, businessmen and all kinds of other professions which make this group so powerful that no difficult tasks remain incomplitable. Their efforts all together coalesce into the wave which reshapes the world. On the other hide, one famous individual's abilities are limited since no matter how sophisticated he/she is in one certain field, there are others remain strange to him/her. One individual could never make any significant events or trends independently that could be recorded in history. World War I and II would be impossible to occur if nobody march on to the battle field with their weapons. Providing that, the fighting will only between the few famous generals or presidents and the war won’t take too long to be over. Thereby, the basic of all events is those people living in that particular era.
However, considering people always have their own destinations and demands, they would never automatically unite together and accomplish anything big. Thus the guide of the famous figures appears critical. Famous historical figures, known as president or chairman, King or Queen, general or administrator, make regulations, decisions and legislations which lead, sometimes force most ordinary people to behave correspondingly. For example, the culture revolution taken place in China cause billions of people fighting, destroying, eliminating historical and cultural relics. The cause of this horrible event is merely a decision made by Chairman Mao who thought these relics and the ideologies they stand for could threaten his authority. Another solid argument is that without Gandhi's leading, the independence of India would never become true. On the whole, we should never underestimate the function of famous historical figures since they play the role of guidepost that leading the path to significant events.
Furthermore, in the field of historical study, concentration on those famous figures is reasonable. Comparing to the majority, we are more familiar to the famous figures' past and there are more literatures to reference. Besides, the study on the famous few could also reveal the big picture of the events and the information about the majority. On the other hand, even if the consideration on the ordinary people is indispensable, searching for their details is much harder with the fact that few records are available.
In brief, the ordinary people perform as the ground of significant events with the famous few lead the direction. We should admit the importance of the majority and never underestimate the crucial function of the historical figures.
