College and universities are places to educate students with high quality. Faculties in college and universities shoulder the responsibility of education, albeit it is always claimed that college student should learn by themselves. The reason is the faculties can lead the students to a brighter way. Obviously, the academic ability of professors is of great importance. However, with the rapid development of science and technology, it seems impossible for the faculties to keep pace with the most advanced knowledge merely stay at school. But in the era of information explosion, faculties can get enough modern science and theories from all kinds of media. Therefore, there is no need to require all of them to work outside.
Undeniably, going out to work can update the relevant knowledge for the faculties in college and university, but as they are often very busy at school, the energy may be limited if required to work outside. Suppose, for example, a professor who have to teach students a complex theory in the morning and conduct an experiment in the afternoon, will he have enough time to work outside? Although faculties in college may be more interested and talented in studying, they are not machines of learning without an end. They require free time for sport, rest, enjoy happiness with their families and so forth. What is more, it is completely possible that faculties in college are not adapt to work outside the campus for the society outside calls for not only the knowledge but also various abilities such as dealing with relationship between colleagues. As a consequence, these needless abilities would waste faculties a lot of time.
But does this mean there is no method for the faculties in college to catch up with the most fashionable knowledge and will be lagged behind? Obviously, no. As the proverb goes, never too old to learn, it is the same with the faculties. To meet the demand of the high-speed development, college faculties have to know the newest direction relevant to their academic domain. Requirement of working outside their academic world is not the only key to solving the problem. Besides, they can acknowledge the information from the internet, newspaper, magazines in relevance. This kind of learning can be viewed as something mixed with entertainment and may function better than merely working outside.
If the faculties have much spare time, however, it will benefit to work outside. Working outside combines theories and realism, therefore helps faculties handle the theory better. Thus, when it turns to the classroom, they can teach better and the students will receive a better education.
To sum up, it is undeniable for college and university faculties to study further to improve the quality of instruction. But I hold the view that there is no need to require them to work outside the academic world to learn the updated knowledge for better ways can be chosen to achieve the same goal.
