TOPIC: ISSUE88 –"Technologies notonly influence but actually determine social customs and ethics.

Technology, a powerful butinvisible world, seeps into every pore of our lives, indicating that our worldis actually mixed with world of technology. Naturally, customs and ethics, whichis the core essence of the world we live in, are silently influenced bytechnologies. There is no doubt that how we think, how be behave, and how wetalk in this society is always touched and then changed by the increasinglyimproved and advanced technology empire. Nevertheless, it’s too assertive toclaim that the publicly believed, held, and cherished customs and ethics arelargely determined by technologies, for they grow on a mysterious and sometimesforbidden land that can hardly be shaped by technologies. We call that land “belief”.

Obviously, our live is interwoven with theworld of technology. In other words, everything in our lives is somewhat impactedand modeled by technologies, including the cornerstone of society, that is,customs and ethics. Example is easy to discover. Before the IndustrialRevolution, a turning point in human history which isso meaningful that for the first time in history, the living standards of themasses of ordinary people have begun to undergo sustained growth, women areforbidden to work outside owing to the seemingly axiomatic fact that women aremean and weak, originated from the story of Adam and Eve. However, thanks tothe fast development of huge machines and availability of inexpensive mechanictools, which were brought about by the advancement of technology, factories neededmore people, especially skilled and cautious workers, to finish works such asassembling, weaving and so on. Under such circumstance, widely accepted beliefthat women should not work out of home was changed and gradually be forsaken bythe grand masses. Undoubtedly, the technology empire deeply influence thesocial customs and ethics, and the impact will inevitably grow as the timepasses.
Unfortunately, this empire is not asstrong and impressive as some believed. It does not have the power to determineor shape the customs and ethics. Reversely, customs and ethics sometimessecretly flow into the empire of technology, influencing the direction of itsgrowth. As we all know, it is how that huge masses think that determined theshape of this society. That is to say, if people regard, for example, benevolenceas the core and shared spirit in their society, they will instill benevolencein every aspect of life: politics, art and of course, technology. Consequently,technologies are to some extent, determined by customs and ethics.Respectively, an apt illustration adds credence to my point. China is a countrythat places high value on modesty and benevolence, stemming from Confucius, themost enlightened thinker and social
philosopher inancient China. Hence, when technology concerning different part of aspects,namely, military, public and space, is developed in China, people consciouslyor subconsciously define it as peaceful technology. What is meant by this isthat all technologies raised from China will serve as peaceful assistant,bearing no hostility to other countries. From this, we can easily notice thatethics and customs sometimes determine the characteristic of technology.
We live ina world that blends with various sorts of beliefs, ranging from high spiritedones such as individualism, cosmopolitism, to base spirited ones such asselfishness, coercion. Different kind of beliefs are somehow influenced bytechnology, and at the same time, influence the development of technology. Thisis the world of interaction, this is the world of interchange.


这篇写起来很没头绪，总觉得让步先说technology有影响，接着说不是determine有点太平凡了，就一TOEFL的思路，不知道大家对这个topic有什么高见，望指教！（本人3.14就要考了，时日不多了~~~~）
