Issue 48
"The study of history places too muchemphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history weremade possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identitieshave long been forgotten."

Theauthor's statement proposes a widely discussed question--who created thehistory, the renowned ones who have long been regarded as the guidance of the historyor those relatively much more silent people who make the history out of theirhand? Undoubtedly, both of the two groups have their influence on the trend ofhistory. However, I tend to agree with the speaker's assertion that too much emphasisis laid on the achievement of the few celebrities during the study of historybut the quantities of real history makers are neglected.

Tobegin with, I will acknowledge the huge contributions of the personages. Generallyspeaking, the role as a leader, typical of Martin Luther King Jr., in onesignificant event can be decisive. As a leader in the African-American CivilRight Movement, Martin Luther King bounded every black people together, and hisspeech, I have a dream, brought the movement to a mountaintop.

Nevertheless,no matter how crucial one person's acts may be, one fact that the developmentof history is a gradual progress and based on constant accumulation isundeniable. To support my point, one needs to look no further than thedevelopment of science. From the origin of human beings to today's high-techworld, all the significant discoveries or theories are based on the countlesslabor of the persons who also work in the same fields. Before Edison inventedthe bulb, thousands of experiments, which, though failed, ruled out the uselessmaterials for Edison, were conducted. To some point, Edison's contribution canbe regarded as the last brick of the pyramid. But most people neglecting the moreessential contribution of those scientists treat Edison alone as the inventorof electric light.

Thereis an old Chinese saying that "Times make heroes" (and I paraphrase),but who shape the times? Apparently, it must be the common people who belong tothe times. Without the consciousness of equal rights in the African-Americans'mind, no movement would have been there, hence no Hero Martin Luther King. Inthe turning point of history, it is often the case that the common ones helpedto form a sufficient environment, then some individuals played a leading rolein some key moments, and finally, common people created the history.

Insum, with all the abovementioned evidence we can draw the conclusion that it iscommon people that make the history rather than the famous few, and this groupof people deserve a lot more attentions from not only experts majoring inhistory but also the equally common people like us.
