Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Renewable sources of energy (sun, water, wind) will soon replace fossil fuels (coals, gas, oil). Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.
Nowadays, an increasing number of environmentalists are appealing in various countries for ceasing using traditional energy resources. They call on every person to use renewable energy instead. Admittedly, fossil fuels, to some extent, play a negative effect on our planet. However, I don’t think it is reasonable to replace the traditional energy in a short time.
To begin with, fossil fuels like gas, oil, petroleum still exert tremendous benefit upon our society. By report, more than 70 percentage of electric power using in China comes from thermal power stations. Although we have been condemning the global warming effect caused by millions of thermal power plants for many years, what we can actually obtain is so controversial if we shut down all these plants in a short span of time. There is no doubt that not only thousands of factories cannot run without electric power, but also millions of workers will lose their jobs miserably. That will not be so easy accepted by government.
Another reason lies in the present immaturity of renewable energy resources. It is widely acknowledged that whether a new type of energy could dominate the market or not, largely depends on the feasibility of a whole periodical production. For instance, we all know the solar energy is the relatively clean and sustainable energy ever exist. Why do not all the countries harness the solar energy to sustain their economy activities? Apparently, the low efficiency of solar-electrical energy transformation is the main restriction and highly weather reliability is another key factor preventing human beings continuously obtaining solar energy from the sun.
What’s more, renewable sources of energy don’t mean that they have zero side effects on our environment and our society. For example, when it comes to constructing a water conservancy, it does not indicate that it can be built at anywhere as long as there is enough water. More factors should be taken into consideration such as the critical eco-issue related to the possible influence on the propagation of local fish and social problems pertaining how to settle the relocated families. I don’t deny the zero pollution contributed by hydropower stations when generating electricity. Whereas, there are still many unavoidable social issues and eco-problems need to be further investigated and fully assessed by experts.
In conclusion, I think using renewable energy resources is an essential part if human beings want to seek further development. However, considering the current technology and the unaffordable social and ecology costs, I tend to believe the new types of energy will not dominate the market very soon.
