Keeping active reading

认真反思以后发现自己遇到comprehensive reading 会不淡定因为还是没有用active 的态度去对待它。所以，一定要掌握active reading,不拿功利性的立场说，也为自己以后的求学做研究时读文献打基础。

我会把每天读的文章做一个summary,然后提出difficulties, 大家一起来讨论这些difficulties, 看看我有没有理解错。

First day
"What Washington Expects for Australia", Topic: international relations and diplomatics,

Main topic: the relationship between the US and Australia is unique: beneficial alliance in both the global and regional issues.

Logic structure: 1. Introduce the topic that the relationship between the US and Australia is strong and mutually beneficial by demonstrating the relationship-which is far from smooth due to a series of tensions over issues between the Great Britain and US.
                       2. Although on international aspects US and Australia have kept a close relationship, they have  elements of global relationship but separate characteristics on regional aspects.
                       3. Using evidence to support the separate characteristics on the relationship between US and Australia. Issues in Southeast Asia-Indonesia.
                       4. The relationships with China's rapid rising of US and Australia.
                       5. Conclusion: with the dynamics in international landscape, the relationship between US and Australia should keep vibrant.

Difficulties: 1.Although the “special relationship” with the United Kingdom is widely regarded as America’s closest partnership, friction has dogged the alliance. From tensions over strategy and empire and World War II to the Suez crisis in 1956 and the recent return of Winston Churchill’s bust from the Oval Office, British–American relations have been far from smooth.
       之前一直把“dogged"的意思理解为insisting in sth, positive. 但是读完这句以后发现，dogged应该是个neutral word,这句的意思应该是friction annoying follow the alliance which causes the relationship between the UK and US become far from smooth.

                2.The US is not advocating a strategy of containing China, to check all increases in Chinese power and influence. Rather Washington, with the support of most of China’s neighbours, is supporting policies of solving disputes by peaceful means, without military and economic coercion, based on compromise and common principles, but supported by a common resolve to oppose unilateral attempts by China to gain advantage.
       这段话的关系是说US's strategies 中对于China的态度，是怎样态度呢？ Not advocating to check all increases in Chinese power and influence, US is in favor of peaceful means based on compromise and common principles which gain support from most of China's neighbors. However, these peaceful means oppose China's unilateral attempts to gain advantage.

Second day

The Evolutionary Case for Great Fiction, Topic:social science & humanity

Main topic: human beings use storytelling to continue the survival of their offsprings.

Logic structure: 1. Using a clan in Pleistocene to introduce the storytelling position in the man's history.
                       2. Broaching the main question "Can storytelling increase offspring?"
                       3. Evidence of survival from evolutionary theory of Darwin.
                       4. The unique characteristic that people differentiating with the animals is their counterfactual thinking ability which makes them to use tales to continue their generations.
                       5. Books are not object, instead, they are experiences which helps increasing the human's offspring.
                       6. Today's media enables people to expose themselves to different tales which serve in helping people to gain useful living information. Therefore, we should be cautious about the story we choose.

Third day

Kopi Luwak- Brown-gold blend, Topic: beverage and foods

Main topic: A method to test the fake Kopi Luwak has been invented by a Japanese research team, which can protect consumers from buying fake Kopi Luwak but also will lead producers to use chemicals to make the coffee which has the same smell with the Kopi Luwak.

Logic structure: 1. Introduction of the Kopi Luwak which is the most expensive coffee in the world.
                       2. The problem that fake Kopi Luwak has been concocted to gain profit emerges.
                       3. A Japanese team has invented a method to test the whether or not the Kopi Luwak in sale is the authentic one.
                       4. The detail of how the Japanese researchers to test the authentic Kopi Luwak. Using the difference of main chemical substance in McCoy, researcher can prove the authenticity of the civet coffee.
                       5. Conclusion: the lower adulteration of Kopi Luwak can be detect is still in question. Even though the testing method prevent the excess of the fraudulent Kopi Luwak coffee, this will inspires counterfeiters to produce fake ones with laboratory smells.

New points: Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee which is also called the "shit".
                  The conclusion of the article is critical thinking.
