General Information
Driven by the rapidly changing socio-economic landscape, keen competition and great demand for allrounders,
interdisciplinary studies emerge as the latest trend in tertiary education. Over past decades, the
Chinese University of Hong Kong has not only dedicated itself to training social leaders through its high
quality teaching and research, but also cultivated all-rounders through its well-established general education
programme. The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education is designed to combine
academic qualities, training of competence required in the new age and important aspects of personal
growth together, in order to help members of the public and education-related professionals to keep pace
with social changes and sharpen their edge.
課程背景
在瞬息萬變的社會及經濟環境中，人才競爭及通才的需求不斷上升，跨學科學習成為高等教育的最
新趨勢。在過去數十載，香港中文大學不但提供高素質的教學與研究，培育不少社會領袖，其歷史
悠久的通識教育更貫徹實踐全人教育的理念。通識教育社會科學碩士課程集學術、潛能發展和個人
成長於一身，為有志與時並進、增強個人才能的各界人士及從事與教育工作有關的專業人員而設。


Curriculum
The Programme provides members of the public and education-related professionals with a comprehensive
understanding of the subject matter of General Education. The Programme covers three areas: (1)
Competencies in the New Age, (2) Humankind and Nature, and (3) Individuals and Society.
Through an understanding of the local and global challenges and opportunities, along with the development
of one’s potentials, the Programme aims to broaden students’ horizon, cultivate their critical thinking and
enhance their capacity to adapt to social changes.
In addition to a team of course instructors of diversified academic backgrounds, ranging from Arts,
Education, Medicine, Science and Social Science, experts from different social sectors will serve as guest
speakers, offering a close look to the latest development of society.
課程
課程協助有志增強個人能力的各界人士及從事與教育工作有關的專業人員，全面了解通識的內容。
課程包括（一）新世代之才能、（二）人類與自然及（三）個人與社會三大範疇。
通過認識本土及國際的挑戰與機遇，加以個人潛能的發掘，課程旨在拓展學員視野、培育批判思考
及加強適應社會轉變的能力。
課程講師的學術背景涵蓋人文、教育、醫學、科學及社會科學，課程亦邀請不同的專業人士擔任演
講嘉賓，加強學員對社會最新發展的認識。

Duration of Study
The Programme is mainly designed for one-year full-time study and two-year part-time study, with
flexibility up to three years for the full-time mode and four years for the part-time mode.

*For part-time mode, it is possible to complete the Programme within one year by taking intensive courses
during the summer session.
修讀年期
課程主要設計為一年的全日制及兩年的兼讀制，然而課程亦具備一定的彈性，最長的全日制可達三
年，而兼讀制則是四年。
學生須於最長修業期限內完成課程，並符合畢業要求。
修讀方式常規修業期最長修業期
全日制一年三年
兼讀制兩年* 四年
*兼讀制學員於暑期修讀密集式課程，亦可於一年內畢業。


Graduation Requirements
To be considered for the award of the degree, students must complete at least 8 courses with at least Grade
C- or above and obtain an overall GPA of at least 2.0.
畢業要求
學員必須修畢八科，而總平均成績不低於2.0，並每科取得C-或以上成績。


Programme Overview
There are up to twenty-two elective courses available in this Master programme*. They are categorized into
three areas, including: (1) Competencies in the New Age, (2) Humankind and Nature, and (3) Individuals
and Society.

Medium of Instruction
The courses will be taught in English or/and Cantonese. Students should consider their knowledge of the
medium of instruction before course enrollment.
授課語言
本課程主要授課語言為英文或/及廣東話。學員必須考慮自己對授課語言的認識才選修有關科目。


Entry Requirements
For detailed entry requirements, please refer to the “Postgraduate Prospectus Taught Programmes 2014-15”
or the Graduate School website (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/).
1. In summary, applicants should have:
 graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree, normally with honours
not lower than Second Class; or
 graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor’s degree,
normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
 completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or
similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
2. Applicants should also fulfil the “English Language Proficiency Requirement” prescribed by the
Graduate School before they are admitted and submit the original score report/certificate for assessment
by the Programme. For details, please refer to the Graduate School website
(http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/).

 持有認可大學之學士學位，而其榮譽等級通常須為乙等或以上；或

申請人亦須於入學前取得符合研究院規定之英語能力資格/學歷，並提交公開試之有效的官方成績單

How to Apply
 Applicants may submit their applications via the Internet (www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss). They should quote the
"Application No." generated for their applications when they send the hardcopies of their supporting
documents to “The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education, Faculty Office of Social
Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong
Kong”. All required supporting documents should be submitted before the application deadline.
 Applicants are required to submit a written statement of purpose (1-2 pages in either English or Chinese)
to the Programme Admission Committee.
 Hardcopy of the Confidential Recommendations must reach “The Master of Social Science Programme
in General Education, Faculty Office of Social Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of
Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong” directly from the referees, or in sealed envelopes and
send by the applicant with other supporting documents to “The Master of Social Science Programme in
General Education, Faculty Office of Social Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of
Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong”. The referees can also choose to submit the
Confidential Recommendations via internet.
Application Deadline: 14 March 2014
Tuition fee: HK$100,000 for the whole programme (8 courses)
Accommodation
Since the university campus has no extra capacity, overseas or mainland students MUST arrange
accommodation by themselves.

前寄回「香港沙田香港中文大學信和樓一樓社會科學院社會科學學部通識教育社會科學碩士課
程」，並於其後提交的所有證明文件上標明申請編號及報讀課程。
 申請人於遞交入學申請時，須附上一篇申明修讀目的之文章(1-2 頁，中、英文均可)，以供課程
入學組審閱。
 機密推薦書必須由諮詢人直接寄往「香港沙田香港中文大學信和樓一樓社會科學院社會科學學部
通識教育社會科學碩士課程」，或以密封加簽形式，由申請人連同其他文件寄往「香港沙田香港
中文大學信和樓一樓社會科學院社會科學學部通識教育社會科學碩士課程」。諮詢人亦可選擇於
網上遞交推薦書。
截止申請日期： 二零一四年三月十四日
學費： 整個課程（八科）為港幣100,000 元
住宿： 同學必須自行安排校外住宿事宜。
