General Information
Driven by the rapidly changing socio-economic landscape, keen competition and great demand for all-rounders, interdisciplinary studies emerge as the latest trend in tertiary education. Over past decades, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has not only dedicated itself to training social leaders through its high quality teaching and research, but also cultivated all-rounders through its well-established general education programme. The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education is designed to combine academic qualities, training of competence required in the new age and important aspects of personal growth together, in order to help members of the public and education-related professionals to keep pace with social changes and sharpen their edge.

课程背景
在瞬息万变的社会及经济环境中，人才竞争及通才的需求不断上升，跨学科学习成为高等教育的最新趋势。在过去数十载，香港中文大学不但提供高素质的教学与研究，培育不少社会领袖，其历史悠久的通识教育更贯彻实践全人教育的理念。通识教育社会科学硕士课程集学术、潜能发展和个人成长于一身，为有志与时并进、增强个人才能的各界人士及从事与教育工作有关的专业人员而设。

Curriculum
The Programme provides members of the public and education-related professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter of General Education. The Programme covers three areas: (1) Competencies in the New Age, (2) Humankind and Nature, and (3) Individuals and Society.
Through an understanding of the local and global challenges and opportunities, along with the development of one’s potentials, the Programme aims to broaden students’ horizon, cultivate their critical thinking and enhance their capacity to adapt to social changes.
In addition to a team of course instructors of diversified academic backgrounds, ranging from Arts, Education, Medicine, Science and Social Science, experts from different social sectors will serve as guest speakers, offering a close look to the latest development of society.

课程
课程协助有志增强个人能力的各界人士及从事与教育工作有关的专业人员，全面了解通识的内容。课程包括（一）新世代之才能、（二）人类与自然及（三）个人与社会三大范畴。
通过认识本土及国际的挑战与机遇，加以个人潜能的发掘，课程旨在拓展学员视野、培育批判思考及加强适应社会转变的能力。
课程讲师的学术背景涵盖人文、教育、医学、科学及社会科学，课程亦邀请不同的专业人士担任演讲嘉宾，加强学员对社会最新发展的认识。

Duration of Study
The Programme is mainly designed for one-year full-time study and two-year part-time study, with flexibility up to three years for the full-time mode and four years for the part-time mode.

修读年期
课程主要设计为一年的全日制及两年的兼读制，然而课程亦具备一定的弹性，最长的全日制可达三年，而兼读制则是四年。
学生须于最长修业期限内完成课程，并符合毕业要求。

Graduation Requirements
To be considered for the award of the degree, students must complete at least 8 courses with at least Grade C- or above and obtain an overall GPA of at least 2.0.

毕业要求
学员必须修毕八科，而总平均成绩不低于2.0，并每科取得C-或以上成绩。

Programme Overview
There are up to twenty-two elective courses available in this Master programme*. They are categorized into three areas, including: (1) Competencies in the New Age, (2) Humankind and Nature, and (3) Individuals and Society.

Medium of Instruction
The courses will be taught in English or/and Cantonese. Students should consider their knowledge of the medium of instruction before course enrollment.

本课程主要授课语言为英文或/及广东话。学员必须考虑自己对授课语言的认识才选修有关科目。

Entry Requirements

1. In summary, applicants should have:

• graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
• graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor’s degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
• completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
  

2. Applicants should also fulfil the “English Language Proficiency Requirement” prescribed by the Graduate School before they are admitted and submit the original score report/certificate for assessment by the Programme. How to Apply

• Applicants may submit their applications via the Internet (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss). They should quote the "Application No." generated for their applications when they send the hardcopies of their supporting documents to “The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education, Faculty Office of Social Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong”. All required supporting documents should be submitted before the application deadline.
• Applicants are required to submit a written statement of purpose (1-2 pages in either English or Chinese) to the Programme Admission Committee.
• Hardcopy of the Confidential Recommendations must reach “The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education, Faculty Office of Social Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong” directly from the referees, or in sealed envelopes and sent by the applicant with other supporting documents to “The Master of Social Science Programme in General Education, Faculty Office of Social Science, 1/F Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong”. The referees can also choose to submit the Confidential Recommendations via the Internet.

Accommodation
Since the university campus has no extra capacity, overseas or mainland students MUST arrange accommodation by themselves.
