Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position (open immediately) in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University.

Job Description: The candidate will conduct research in the broad area of computational solid mechanics with a focus on multi-physics modeling and/or fracture mechanics. The candidate is expected to contribute to one or both of the following ongoing projects:

1) Applications of the XFEM or the phase field method to transient electro-diffusion-reaction problems with applications to corrosion in alloys and radiation damage in semiconductor materials.

2) Continuum damage mechanics or phase field method to study fracture propagation in porous and/or polycrystalline materials, such as, ceramics, trabecular bone and Portland cements.

The candidate will be working in a multi-disciplinary research environment and work in close collaboration with material scientists, physicists and/or electrical engineers.

Qualifications: The candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (Computational Mechanics), Applied and Computational Mathematics, Physics or related field. The candidate is expected to have a good record of publications and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The ideal candidate would have prior experience in more than one of the following topics: extended/generalized finite element method (XFEM), phase field method, fracture propagation, discrete dislocation modeling, mechanics of electronic materials, and numerical methods for PDEs. Programming experience with C++ and FORTRAN is essential and knowledge of parallel computing strategies is desirable.
