Ph.D. position, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands
The Database group of the University of Twente has an opening for a fully funded
four-year Ph.D. position in the Opaque project.
The Opaque project focuses on query optimization for relational XQuery engines. Advances
in techniques for storage and query processing for XML using existing relational engines
show that this approach has great potential for being able to manage the ever growing
volumes of XML data. Under the name Pathfinder, the University of Konstanz (Germany),
the research institute CWI (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and the University of Twente
(Enschede, The Netherlands) cooperate in the context of several projects on developing a
scalable XQuery query engine based on relational database technology. Contributions on
storage models, index structures, and algorithms have been made in recent years.
Currently, attention is shifting towards query optimization techniques to address the
remaining performance problems, to which Opaque hopes to make a contribution.
The Ph.D. student will extend existing query optimizer technology to integrate XML query
processing with traditional query processing. This involves extending relational algebra
to incorporate some XML-specifics not easily captured in relational terms, development
of a query rewriter based on equivalence rules in the algebra, and a cost model that as
accurately as possible predicts query execution cost based on statistics.
We ask: A MSc degree in computer science, software engineering, databases, programming
languages, artifical intelligence or an equivalent degree. Good communication skills, in
writing as well as oral. Your main task will be to do research, but you will be given
the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience.
We offer: An interesting temporary research position in a dynamic and international
environment. You will be appointed for a period of four years. The salary starts at
EUR1813 gross per month and grows to EUR2238 gross per month in the fourth year.
Information and application:
You are invited to send your application together with curriculum vitae, a list of
courses you have followed (with grades) and the names and addresses of two referees,
before April 11, by email or on paper to

The Computer Science department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics
and Computer Science (EEMCS) is one of the largest academic institutions in computer
science in the Netherlands, with 220 faculty members and 1200 students. It provides
courses in Technical Computer Science, Business Information Technology, and Telematics.
In addition, the department contributes to computer science education within other
academic programmes. The research of the department is part of the multidisciplinary
research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT).
