2005.11.08 (2005.11.19)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

build the body, exercise, gym, facility, equipment
(Campus life, personal interest, leisure activity, )

Some universities require students to take classes in many subjects. Other universities require students to specialize in one subject. Which is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
To specialize on one subjects

Do you agree or disagree with the statement? You (student) should take the most difficult class in college or at university, even if you cannot get the top grades (or marks) in them. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Which point of view would you choose: a high-paying job with long hours that would give you little time with family and friends or a lower-paying job with shorter hours that would give you more time with family and friends?

2006.10.18*
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Most advertisements make the products seems much better than what it really is. Use examples to support your position.

2007.12.08
Advertisement is a waste of time and money because customers already know what they need. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

2006.02.03 (2006.10.28)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: young people now enjoy their life better than the old generation. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.
2007.02.10 U.S.

2007.12.09
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Our present lives are easier and more comfortable than those of our grandparents. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.
young people now can not enjoy life better than the old generation.
Our life are not better than our grandparents.
Our present lives are not easier and comfortable.

2007.06.09
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Twenty years from now, people will have more leisure time. Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion

2007.04.29
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is important to know every event happening around the world even if it is unlikely to have any effect on your daily life. Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion

•2007.11.24•Do you agree or disagree with the statement: In 20 years, people will spend less time on cooking food. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position. •2008.03.08•Some people spend too much time on personal enjoyment-they only do things they like rather than doing what they should do. Do you think this is good? Use specific reasons and examples in your explanation.

例子:《the pursuit of happyness》

it is inspired by a true story . a man who used up all his money to buy a kind of medical machine. he thought he would make a forture ,but it might be the other way around .long time has passed, but he hasn't sold even one set. the family is totally in debt .his wife have been working for 16h a day for 4 month and his son is sent into a kindergarten (which cannot spell happiness correctly ) .

the hero ,Chris, graduated from college ends to be a stock worker, really impressive and amazing.but it is not conincident ,all the credits come from his personal efforts ,persistence, unyielding faith in himself. there are devastating things occured to this poor man :his wife left him ,he is swept off by his landlady. and he took his son to live in the charity house which they have to stand in line in time. i am deep moved by his faith in pursuit his happiness. during the dark days ,he thought of THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE which says the pursuit of happiness. he doubt about it:whether happiness exsists or just the pursuit exsits. however hard it is ,he never gives up hope and trying .

the most classic words that i think the ones he told his son.

"Don't ever let somebody tell you , you can't do something , not even me , all rigjht ? "

"you got a dream ,you got to protect it . people can't do something themselves they want to tell you,you cant do it. you want some ,go get it "

2007.03.23
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is better to watch serious movie that helps people thinking than to watch movies that could amuse and entertain people.

2007.06.16
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents find it hard to control their children for the children are now influenced by many things outside home like television or movie. Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion

2007.08.04
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Printing books will disappear in twenty years. Give specific examples and reasons to support your position.
观点: 同意printing books will disappear.

观点:同意mass media now pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people.

2005.12.17 (2006.9.16, 2006.9.15)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Recently, we have so many sources of news and information, so that we can not tell which one is the real one or who is telling the truth. Use specific reasons or examples or support your ideas.
1,South China tiger:Thirteen government officials have been punished and a man arrested for presenting false evidence to prove the highly endangered South China tiger existed in the wild.
2,Virginia Tech massacre:
The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting consisting of two separate attacks approximately two hours apart on April 16, 2007, that took place on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. The perpetrator, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people and wounded many others before committing suicide. The massacre is the deadliest peacetime shooting incident by a single gunman in United States history, on or off a school campus.
Cho, a senior English major at Virginia Tech, had been diagnosed with and was treated for a severe anxiety disorder in middle school and continued receiving therapy and special education support until his junior year of high school. While in college in 2005, Cho had been accused of stalking two female students and was declared mentally ill by a Virginia special justice. At least one professor had asked him to seek counseling.
The attacks received international media coverage and drew criticism of U.S. laws and culture from commentators around the world. It sparked intense debate about gun violence, gun laws, gaps in the U.S. system for treating mental health issues, the perpetrator's state of mind, the responsibility of college administrations, privacy laws, journalism ethics, and other issues. Television news organizations that aired portions of the killer's multimedia manifesto were criticized by victims' families, Virginia law enforcement officials, and the American Psychiatric Association.

2006.03.25   (2006.12.15)

Have a carefully plan
clear goal , motivate you to learn more

use time efficiently, decrease unexpected things will happen, control well and do well.
It is always so easy to comprise to desire. Maybe it is the nature of human being. We could not achieve any accomplishment if we comply with the desire. The development of the society is resulted from people’s perseverance, creativity, and cooperation with each other. If a person act in arbitrary and reckless manner, he/she is not doing society any favor, what’s worse, he/she also ruins his/her own life. No one likes the people who can not control themselves at all. In fact, lack of self-control results in most of the crimes in society. Thus self-control becomes an indispensable part of excellent personality. Self-control is just like to make a contract with you. The only thing you need to remember is never to break it till it is expired.

2007.07.21

2007.02.24 (2007.12.15)*
Do you agree or disagree with the statement: it is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than to learn facts? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

1. the importance of learning the facts.
Facts are better related with the real world which students are trying to study.

1. The importance of understanding the ideas and concepts.
Ideas and concepts

2006.12.13* (68/185)
Many teachers assign homework to students every day. Do you think that daily homework is necessary for students? Use specific reasons and details to support your idea.

2007.03.24*
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teachers should go back to school to receive further education after they have worked 5 years in their position. Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion

2007.10.28
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teachers should be paid according to how well his students perform. Give specific reasons and details to support your opinion

2007.10.27
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Observing or studying animals can help us to understand human nature. Give specific examples and reasons to support your position.
185
A zoo has no purpose. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Give specific examples and reasons to support your position.

By observing and studying the behaviors and habits of animals in the zoo, we can learn the basic rules of surviving and living in the world. A monkey has to fight to win when he decide to be a leader of the group; birds have to show their beautiful plume and voice if they want to attract their partners; and all the animals, if they want a life free of worries, responsibilities, and pressure, have to sacrifice their freedom.

Some people think that human needs for farmland, housing, and industry are more important than saving land for endangered animals. Do you agree or disagree with this point of view? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

正方:Save the land for human activities.

反方: saving the land for endangered animals

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Successful people take new things and take risks rather than the thing that they've done well. Use specific reasons and details to support your position.

。。。。。。
Harland David Sanders, better known as Colonel Sanders (September 9, 1890 – December 16, 1980) was an American entrepreneur who founded Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). His image is omnipresent in the chain's advertising and packaging, and his name is sometimes used as a synonym for the KFC product or restaurant itself.

At the age of 40, Sanders cooked chicken dishes and other meals for people who stopped at his service station in Corbin, Kentucky. Since he did not have a restaurant, he served customers in his living quarters in the service station. His local popularity grew, and Sanders moved to a motel and restaurant that seated 142 people and worked as the chef. Over the next nine years, he developed his method of cooking chicken. Furthermore, he made use of a pressure fryer that allowed the chicken to be cooked much faster than by pan frying.
He was given the honorary title "Kentucky Colonel" in 1935 by Governor Ruby Laffoon. Sanders chose to call himself "Colonel" and to dress in a stereotypical "Southern gentleman" style as a way of self-promotion.
After the construction of Interstate 75 reduced his restaurant's customer traffic, Sanders took to franchising Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, starting at age 65, using $105 from his first Social Security check to fund visits to potential franchisees.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: technology causes children show less creativity than they were in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your idea.
同意:Technology causes children less creative.

Should people be allowed to use mobile phones in public transportation? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

1.Emergency
2.Strong tie with family and job
3.Take photos + Music + News and information
4.The deaf

Do you think children should play computer games? Use specific reasons and examples to support your idea.

观点:

Children now are much more difficult to be understood by their parents than 50 years ago. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Use specific reasons and examples to support your idea.

NO.1阅读

NO.2听力

NO.3口语

NO.4作文

Fungus Could Be Kudzu Killer

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service are testing a fungus that could one day be sent into battle against the land-grabbing vine kudzu.

It’s been called the “vine that ate the south(这个th的发音和ce的发音我本身就如中文中的z,zh不分一样,在自己读的时候不分,所以在听的时候也听不太出来,所以这个有的时候就成了听力中的一大问题。 Kudzu grows(听成了go,一方面grow和go在发音上就是差了一个中间的r,但是听起来要是不仔细分辨的话还是挺像的) so fast it can completely cover a cabin(这个词不是我的听力词汇,所以没有听出来) in the woods(听成了words,这就又暴露出了短元音和长原音之间的区分实在是没有啊,word [wə:d],wood [wud]) in a couple of days. The invasive plant takes(听成了plan takes,也就是连读没分) over another 150,000 acres every year. Which costs another $6 million to control.

But plant pathologists(听成了plan per forugist?pathologist不是我的听力词汇啊) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s(这里的连读of a,听成了va,从后面的of older我听成了vodal? Research Service have gotten promising results with a fungus that itself rapidly spreads in kudzu. The fungus is calledMyrothecium verrucaria. In early tests, the fungus killed all kudzu seedlings and at least 90 percent of older plants. Most important, Myrothecium did little or no damage(这里是只听出了little和damage,其他的都没听出来,很快,感觉little or no就是littlor no) to the species that commonly(不太主动所以听成了comingly) live in habitats infested(由于重音直接从fested来所以听不出来了,也不太主动的词汇) with kudzu, such as pine, oak, cedar, pecan, hickory, blackberry and, of course, sassafras.

So what’s the catch?(有什么内幕) The fungus produces chemicals called tricothecenes, which can damage the health of humans and animals. But the researchers discovered that if they(连得太快) grew the fungus in a fermenter(发酵槽) or on a liquid diet, the production of the toxins( ['tɔksin]) fell precipitously(不主动). If the fungus can be safely let loose(一连读就不知道什么了,释放,放出) one day, it could finally give kudzu the heave-ho(开除,免职,give sb the heave-ho).

学习:
kudzu : an Asian vine (Pueraria lobata) of the legume family that is used for forage and erosion control and is often a serious weed in the southeastern United States
vine : a plant whose stem requires support and which climbs by tendrils or twining or creeps along the ground;

Paragraph 1:The vast grasslands of the High Plains in the central United States were
settled by farmers and ranchers in the 1880’s. This region has a semiarid climate, and for 50
years after its settlement, it supported a low-intensity agricultural economy of cattle ranching
and wheat farming.
In the early twentieth century, however, it was discovered that much of
the High Plains was underlain by a huge aquifer (a rock layer containing large quantities of
groundwater). This aquifer was named the Ogallala aquifer after the Ogallala Sioux Indians,
who once inhabited the region.
1.According to paragraph 1, which of the following statements about the High Plains is
true?
○Until farmers and ranchers settled there in the 1880’s, the High Plains had never been
inhabited.
○The climate of the High Plains is characterized by higher-than-average temperatures.
○The large aquifer that lies underneath the High Plains was discovered by the Ogallala
Sioux Indians.
○Before the early 1900’s there was only a small amount of farming and ranching in the
High Plains.

Paragraph 2: An ecologist who studies a pond today may well find it relatively unchanged
in a year’s time. Individual fish may be replaced, but the number of fish will tend to be the
same from one year to the next. We can say that the properties of an ecosystem are more
stable than the individual organisms that compose the ecosystem.

3. According to paragraph 2, which of the following principles of ecosystems can be
learned by studying a pond?
○Ecosystem properties change more slowly than individuals in the system.
○The stability of an ecosystem tends to change as individuals are replaced.
○Individual organisms are stable from one year to the next.
○A change in the members of an organism does not affect an ecosystem’s properties

Paragraph 7:Many ecologists now think that the relative long-term stability of climax
communities comes not from diversity but from the “patchiness” of the environment, an
environment that varies from place to place supports more kinds of organisms than an
environment that is uniform.
A local population that goes extinct is quickly replaced by
immigrants from an adjacent community. Even if the new population is of a different species,
it can approximately fill the niche vacated by the extinct population and keep the food web
intact.
11.Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the
highlighted sentence in the passage? Incurred choices change the meaning in important ways
or leave out essential information.
○Ecologists now think that the stability of an environment is a result of diversity rather
than patchiness.
○Patchy environments that vary from place to place do not often have high species
diversity.
○Uniform environments cannot be climax communities because they do not support as
many types of organisms as patchy environments.
○A patchy environment is thought to increase stability because it is able to support a
wide variety of organisms.

14.Directions: An introductory sentence for a brief summary of the passage is provided
below. Complete the summary by selecting the THREE answer choices that express the most
important ideas in the passage. Some sentences do not belong in the summary because they
express ideas that are not presented in the passage or are minor ideas in the passage. This
question is worth 2 points.
The process of succession and the stability of a climax community can change over time.

Answer choices
○The changes that occur in an ecosystem from the pioneer to the climax community can
be seen in one human generation.错
○A high degree of species diversity does not always result in a stable ecosystem.对
○The level of resilience in a plant community contributes to its long-term stability.
○Ecologists agree that climax communities are the most stable types of ecosystems.错
○Disagreements over the meaning of the term “stability” make it difficult to identify the
most stable ecosystems.对
○The resilience of climax communities makes them resistant to destruction caused by
humans.

The question of ecosystem stability is complicated, however. The first problem is that
ecologists do not all agree what “stability” means. Stability can be defined as simply lack of
change. In that case, the climax community would be considered the most stable, since, by
definition, it changes the least over time. Alternatively, stability can be defined as the speed
with which an ecosystem returns to a particular form following a major disturbance, such as a
fire. This kind of stability is also called resilience. In that case, climax communities would be
the most fragile and the least stable, since they can require hundreds of years to return to the
climax state.
Ecologists are especially interested to know what factors contribute to the resilience of
communities because climax communities all over the world are being severely damaged or
destroyed by human activities. The destruction caused by the volcanic explosion of Mount St.
Helens, in the northwestern United States, for example, pales in comparison to the
destruction caused by humans. We need to know what aspects of a community are most
important to the community’s resistance to destruction, as well as its recovery.

Ten mysteries of you

WHAT A STRANGE CREATURE YOU ARE

We belong to a remarkably quirky species. Despite our best efforts, some of our strangest foibles still defy explanation

But as science probes deeper into these eccentricities, it is becoming clear that behaviours and attributes that seem frivolous at first glance often go to the heart of what it means to be human.

1.Blushing

Even Darwin struggled to explain why we would evolve a response that lets others know that we have cheated or lied

2.Laughter

The discovery that laughter is more often produced at banal comments than jokes prompts the question, why did it evolve?

3.Pubic hair

Scent radiator, warmth provider, or chafe protection? The answer to why humans have clumps of hair in private places is still open for debate

4.Teenagers

Even our closest relatives, the great apes, move smoothly from their juvenile to adult life phases – so why do humans spend an agonising decade skulking around in hoodies?

5.Dreams

Today, most researchers reject Freud's belief that dreams are expressions of our unconscious desires – but if that's the case, what are they for?

6.Altruism

People still debate whether humans are genuinely altruistic by nature, but if we are, most agree it doesn't make evolutionary sense

7.Art

Sexual display, learning tool or form of social glue? Art still refuses to be pinned down

8.Superstition

Many of us have superstitions – odd, reassuring habits that make no rational sense – but there may be an underlying reason for such behaviour

9.Kissing

The urge to kiss is not brought about by genes, so why do we find it so pleasurable to share saliva?

10.Nose-picking

Many of us do it, but eating bogeys offers little nutritional reward – could there be a health reason for the unappealing habit?

Cesium Clock Faces Ytterbium Challenge

National Institute of Standards and Technology researchers are developing atomic clocks based on the element ytterbium(镱Yb,70号元素 that could outclass the cesium(铯Cs,55号元素atomic clocks that currently set the standard.
outclass : to excel or surpass so decisively as to be or appear to be of a higher class

You’ve given some thought to oxygen, carbon, uranium. But you’ve probably never mused about the element ytterbium, symbol Yb. A new study by scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, says that ytterbium could find a role(我现在发现自己对于r的发音好像有很大的问题,我都听不出来他发的是r,想上面一篇的grow,这个r好像有点喉咙的感觉) in super-accurate atomic clocks. The report is in the journal Physical Review Letters.

The gold standard, if you will, for atomic clocks, is the element cesium, symbol Cs. Official civilian time is kept by the cesium NIST-F1 fountain clock, accurate to within one second every 100 million years. And the international definition of the second is based on exactly how many vibrations happen when a cesium atom’s electron changes energy levels. How many? 9,192,631,770.

Anyway, your watch is fine for getting to work about on time, but if you want your GPS to work fine, you need these atomic clocks on earth and on satellites. And an ytterbium clock has the potential to be even more accurate and stable than the cesium chronometer. Wow, I gotta go, look at the time.
