Issue 153 “Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.
When it comes to education, an increasing number of people believe that it is an important aspect in one’s life time. Thus there is a decision to be made that whether we should bring certain skepticism or just accept what we are taught when referring the attitude toward learning. As far as I am concerned, it is hard to choose either of them since under different circumstances we should adopt different ones.
It is widely acknowledged that when we were young, the majority of us would surely accept the knowledge since we were too young to make a judge. Specifically speaking, when we were young kids may be younger than 6 or 7 years old, we could not even distinguish right from wrong, needless to say, show doubts to our teachers. Admittedly, there are a few students who show highly intelligence and may have their own minds. But most of the ordinary kids receive knowledge more than asking question. Therefore, at this stage of time, the majority would accept what we learned passively instead of questioning.
However, alongside our growing up, more and more students acquire the ability of self-thinking as well as judging due to the accumulation of knowledge. At this time, in a nutshell, the attitude of skepticism would make them deeply acquire the knowledge, practice their independent thinking, the ability of concentrating, and what’s more inspire their enthusiasm for learning. That is to say, when they focus on one question and would like to prove whether it is right or wrong, they would pay too much attention on it like looking up to some relevant books which may be beneficial to understand the knowledge. Thus this course would definitely train their thinking. To work it out, the ability of concentrating would be ignored. And finally the interest on this course would be raised up. In my opinion, the course for question is a good way to practice one’s learning ability.
What’s more, without the attitude for skepticism, the scientific development would be more or less retarded. Skepticism keeps bright the key that open the treasury of achievement. If Galileo had not kept the attitude of skepticism towards the theory suggested by Aristotle, we may not know that the failing velocity is not proportionate to the weight of failing object. The celebrated Copernicus would never bring about the heliocentric theory if he had accepted the geocentric theory
without thinking. Had Darwin allow the busy brain to go to sleep while he receive the knowledge, he would never propose the theory of evolution. In view of scientific research, we could catch the knowledge with the questioning attitude instead of accepting it blindly, only under this condition, the science would be moving forward. Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, so is eternal questioning, the price of noble and enduring success.
To sum up, it is indisputable that both two attitudes would not be avoided when we are learning. What we should choose may depend on the situation. It must be admitted that the skepticism attitude for learning does have some obvious advantages and might be an impetus for scientific development. |
