TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
According to the speaker, students should not accept what they are taught passively but bring a certain skepticism to the things they are studying. On the balance, I agree with this assertion that students should question when they are learning. Skepticism can lead to a better understanding or even completely new findings. Otherwise, the skepticism should not be abused by focusing on some irrelevant things which will render the students entangled with such unimportant things and negative the real knowledge they are required to get.
First of all, students should be encouraged to have a sense of skepticism when they are learning. On the one hand, what the students are taught might not always right, there are some errors or conventions unavoidably whether it was blamed for the teacher or the knowledge itself. If a student do not question and accept it passively, he will never have the chance to gain an access to the truth. On the other hand, the process of question is also a process of understanding the knowledge better. When a students have a question about what he were taught, no matter how small it is, the process of solving it will leave him a deep impression of the knowledge. So we can claim that question is a necessary progress in learning, and without question, one cannot acquire the knowledge well.
In addition, skepticism can also lead to the development in the academic. By doubting the current theories we can turn down the wrong theory and establish a new one which is more accurate. One of the best examples is Harvey who has questions about the old views on how the blood functions in the human body. With these questions, Harvey had done a lot of related studies and ultimately found the right answers that blood is pumped around the body by the heart rather than the lung as previously thought. This new model of blood circulation is a big step in the biology and is also the foundation of modern medical science.
Furthermore, having a skeptic view on the existed things is a motivation for improvement. When one is not satisfied and skeptic with the existed things, he will be motivated to improve it better. For instance, Unsatisfied with the Unix Operating system, Linus Torvalds, a student in Finland, successfully created a better system for opening operation called Linux on the basis of the Unix. By the same token, Watt rebuilt the steam engine to make it function more effectively and this makes great contribution the Industry Revolution. These improvements are both attributed to the skepticism and students who have it can also make great achievements in their own field.
Admittedly, skepticism can promote the students’ learning and bring a development in both academic and application areas. However, question too much about some irrelevant things will block the students’ learning. It is nevertheless a waste of time for the students to be entangled with some indifferent questions such as what is the exact number of experiments Edison had done before he invented the bulb. Knowing the exact number neither gives students a deeper understanding of the bulb nor provides them the ability to invent, but the real point lied in how the bulb function and be invented. There is a conclusion we can get is that students should be encouraged to question but not abuse the skepticism by questioning the insignificant things.
In sum, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that students have a spirit of skepticism which will make them acquire the right knowledge and understand it better. Moreover, skepticism plays a vital role in the developing of the academic and social areas. Though there so many advantages of skepticism, students should be discouraged from using it in the indifferent things. |
