Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society’s past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situation, modern developments should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served.

Rebuild or Reserve

All the historical buildings which are valuable in last societies are modern buildings in their times ,and those are not so valuable as well. Of course,Achitecture is the art of solidation.Many historical buildings are the great resevence of those time’s societies. They can tell us about the stories of those time and present moving pictures of history.
Well ,we can see a lot of old building s were destructed in the process of the construction of a big city,which some hold an opinion that the ground can be better ultilized by destructing the old buildings and establishing new buildings may because the lands of building became more expensive. The Developer,I think,can improve the efficiency of the use of lands of buildings.I must concede that many old buildings are out of date. They can no longer provide the owners good functions. They also can not satisfy human’s daily use. In this perspective,this old building ougnt to be rebuild for better use instead of to be reserved. As far as I know,many old rural buildings,which stand in the borders of rural areas and urban areas,were destructed continually every years.
At the same time, there are a large number of buildings be preserved and be redecrorated, Which spend a lot of money on them from us. Why? Why this buildings are preserved but not destructed. In my thoughts, those historical buildings are valuable. Then what means valuable? Sometimes it means those buildings that have a special architectural style which can present the fasion and the culture of that time. Sometimes it means those buldings which can call back our common memories. Such as the relics of massacre or war. It is so hard to clearly dified what value is. But it exsist anywhere. Sometimes the good presevrence can result in a large economical benefit. And that is why the China government always want China to have more sites in the list of World Cultural Relic.
However, modern planners might be short-sighted. Sometimes they can not see the futher values of the old buildings while they can just see the interests by now. So sometimes their short-sighted decisions may hurt the citizens’further interests. And we should better have a long-term sight in which we can pursuit values. In this way, we can’t make a decision on destruting building so easily and we’d better have a committee to decide wnich buildings can be destructed and rebuild, which can not?
In short, I call a balance between preseving valuable and historical buildings and better use of lands of building. This may due to our cultural demands.
