TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."


    In this memo , the West Meria Pulic Health Coucil recommends having lchthaid daily to prevent colds and lower absenteeism in schools and workplaces.It has cited that people lived in East Meria who consume fish a lot rarely get colds and lchthaid is a nutritional sumpplement derived from fish oil .It also points out that colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work.This argument depends on several unsubstantiated assumptions and was therefore unpersuasive as it standed.    First of all , the conclusion that eating a considerable amount of fish was the reason that  people  in East Meria rarely got colds was weak.The memo offers no evidences to substantiate that the low rate of getting colds is caused by eating fishes. It is entirely possible that people in East Meria rarely got colds mainly because they had a good awareness of health  exercise frequently;or Perhaps the weather in East Meria is good and it is not easy to get colds.

    Secondly,even assuming  that eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent people from getting colds, it is neverthleless impossible to access that eating Ichthaid would have the same effect.The memo must support some evidence that fish oil has the effect of preventing colds.Lacking such evidence, there are many possible explanations for decrease in rate of getting colds.Perhaps,it is only the fresh of fish that can prevent from getting colds. Even though , fish oil can help preventing colds,it is also too hastily to ensure that eating the supplement derived from it would have the same effect.

     Thirdly,the arguer fails to indicate that most absences from school and work are caused by colds.Without giving any evidence, the memo points out that colds are the reason most frequently given from absences from school and work.Supposing colds are the most frequently reason from absences,the conclusion absences are mainly caused by colds is still unconvincing, It is likely that some employees would cheat for some reason when asking for a leave.

     In sum ,the memo is weak on several grounds. To strengthen it, the Concil should provide clear evidence that eating fish would help preventing colds and having Ichthaid would have the same effect. Moreover,the Concil must substantiate that most absences from school and work are caused by colds. To better access the conclusion , i would need to know whether Ichthaid has a side effect or not and other reasons that mostly given for absences.
