TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.
"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."
The author points out that Fancy Toy Company's profits have fallen considerablely and he or she lays the blame entirely on president Pat Salvo. And according to the fact that Starlight Jewelry's profits have increased dramatically over the past several years, the writor assumes that the increasement is due to Rosa who is currently president of Starlight Jewelry. And then synthesizingthe two hypothesizes, the arguer accordingly suggest they should invite Rosa to take place of Pat Salvo and predict that their profits would increase considerablely in theleadership of Rosa. However, the argumentsuffers from several flaws , which render it unconvincing.
To begin with, the author's assumption that the decresement of profits of Fancy Toy Company is the fault of their presidentPat Salvo is unwarranted, because profits' s decline might have resulted from other eventsinstead. For example, in the last three quarters of this year, the raw materialare insufficient and they could not have produced as many Toys as they did before, so their profits declined; or perhaps,
price of necessary goods increased and people could not afford to buy toys. Without ruling out scenarios such as these, the editor could not lay the blame entirely on president Par Salvo.
Similarly, it is unconvincing to owe the increasement of profits over the last several years to Rosa who is Starlight Jewelry's current president, it is likely that other factors ,such as enormous market demand, afall in prices of raw materials and so on, that caused the increasement.Furthermore
the author fails to indicatethat Rosa has been president of Starlight Jewelry for several years. Lacking that evidence , it is entirely possible that Rosahas just taken up that position for a few days. If this is the case, the assumption that the increasement of profits was the contribution of Rosa seemsmore unconvincing.
Finally , even if increasement of profits was mainly the contribution of Rosa, it is also too hastily to assume that Rosa could help Fancy Toy Company increase their profits. It seems that the arguer has overlooked the difference between the two companies. Two companies are in different industries that Fancy Toy company sells toys and Starlight Jewelry sells jewelries ,and then the methods of management that fit Starlight Jewelry may not be appropriate in Fancy Toy Company. Or perhaps , Starlight Jewelry is a small company and Fancy Toy Company is a big one, and itis usually more difficult to manage larger company than a small one.
In sum , this argument is not as convincing as it stands. To bolster it, the author must provide clear evidence to substantiate that Par Salvo should be responsible for the profits’s decline and the increasement of Starlight Jewelry's profits is mainlythe contribution of Rosa. Also, the author must make a comparison between the two companies and show the reason why Rosacan manage Fancy Toy Company and increase its profits.
