We might think (that) the bullies are pretty(quite) different from the victims of bully(ing). But those who either become a bully or (a) victim actually share similiar outlooks and have similiar difficulties dealing with their environments. But there is,however, one significant risk factor for bully(ing).

Researchers reviewed the nanolast(and analyzed) 153 studies over the last 30 years and found that both victims and bullies have poor problem--solving skills with their(within) social situations. They also found that boys bully more than girls and here's the siganificant point:those who do poorly in school all have the(are at a) higher risk of becoming a bully. The research was published this week in the journal school psychology protely(quarterly).

No,Typical bullies have negative attitudes towards others, feel badly about themselves,(and)most likely grew up (in a)home with conflict.Victims share much(of) the same, these negative attitudes and conflictent(conflict in the) family.

But the dividing characteristic, however,is that bullies dislike school.Attending be form(and tend to perfom) worse academicly than those who later become victims.

Both of the current interventions tried to enforce anti-bullying rules or simply remove the bully from the bullying situation. As we know(The authors note),however, that the most successful intervention is three prond(three-pronged).They suggest targeting symotesty(simultaneously) the areas that may be influencing the pretention(potential) bully or victim in the first place. And these are the parents, the peers and the schools.

Sometimes it seems there is only so much we can learn about dinosaurs. We can't know their coloration looked like and we can't watch them interact with each other. We can only extrapolate from their remains. But now scientists say we can discern a hint of the dinosaur movement from ostriches.

The giant, flightless birds still have feathered forelimbs that scientists assume were now solely used for display and temperature regulation. But researchers from Germany and Belgium carefully observed hand-raised ostriches, and modeled their movement in the surrounding air streams. They found that far from being useless in movement, the leftover wings help ostriches break quickly, turn and zigzag. The scientists present their findings on the society for experimental biology’s annual conference in Prague.

Ostriches are descendants of dinosaurs and researchers liken ostrich movements to those of bipedal dinosaurs. Paleontologists have previously thought some dinos’ small forelimbs had served to catch insects or rip flesh. But the new research shows the dinosaurs may have used their forelimbs to help with quickness, stability and agility. Further study in the field could lead to more accurate ideas of what it once looked like when dinosaurs went dashing through their prehistoric landscape.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that steadily erodes the ability for nerve cells to communicate and this leads to all kinds of neurological symptoms, often slowly progressing to severe cognitive and physical disability. But one of the most common symptoms is depression. It’s often attributed to the mental toll of managing the disease which has no cure.

But recent research published in the journal Biological Psychiatry describes a physical connection between MS and mood.
Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientists found that the hippocampus, the brain area responsible for long-term memory, is smaller in people suffering from MS than in healthy adults.

They found a connection between this atrophy in the hippocampus and hyperactivity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (or HPA axis) in MS sufferers. The HPA axis is part of the neuroendocrine system that manages stress.

The authors note that this link between hyperactivity in the HPA and an atrophied hippocampus is also consistently seen in those with chronic depression, yet this correlation has never been studied in MS patients.

The next step, of course, is to compare depressed populations—those with MS and those without—to look for any significant differences in how depression progresses in each case.

Those of you following the World Cup know that at this stage there can be no more draws. Ties are broken during overtime play, or in a penalty(处罚) kick shootout in which a goalkeeper’s ability to anticipate the ball’s flight can mean the difference between victory and elimination. Now, scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have discovered how a kicker’s body can betray whether he’s aiming left or right.
In a penalty shot, it’s kicker versus goalkeeper. And with the shooter standing just 12 yards from the goal, that ball can touch net in about half a second. That’s faster than a keeper can launch himself from the goal’s center to either post. Which means that a goalkeeper has to start moving before the kicker’s foot meets the ball. And he has to guess correctly which way to dive.

To figure out how good goalies(守门员) might up their odds, scientists attached motion detectors to college-level penalty kickers. And they found a handful of indicators that reliably predict kick direction, such as the angle of the kicker’s hips and how he plants his supporting foot.

Good goalies may be able to read those subtle(奇妙的,微妙的) cues. Meaning that they use their hands, and their heads.

总结:

Draws       平局
Tie            平局
Penalty       处罚(penalty kick点球)
Shootout     交火
Polytechnic Institute (多科性)工学院
Betray        出卖,背叛

Dive           扑球
Goalie        守门员
Odds         可能的机会,成败的可能性(单数odd 奇数的,不成对的)
Hip            臀部

It’s a plotline worthy of an action film—galaxies, violently torn apart, smashing into one another, leaving remnants of themselves behind billions of years later. That’s the scene that accounts for some of the oldest stars in our own Milky Way galaxy, according to work published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Researchers ran a huge computer simulation of the evolution of the universe starting shortly after the big bang, more than 13 billion years ago. It’s the most detailed model ever produced, and allowed a close examination of the make-up of the Milky Way’s stellar halo. The stellar halo is debris that surrounds our familiar white swirl of stars. The halo is much larger and much older than the Milky Way itself.

And the simulations show that the ancient stars in the halo were formed from young, small galaxies that collided and left behind fragments of themselves, as opposed to those stars actually being born in the Milky Way when it started forming 10 billion years ago. The researchers say the scene depicts the dramatic—and violentclashes that were taking place long, long ago, in a galaxy not very far away.

总结:

Plotline          情节主线(plot :情节)

Strong sea breezes offer one of the best options for generating electricity from the wind. And here's the bonus: since humans like to cluster on the coast, offshore wind tends to reach places that need more electricity.

But building a massive turbine and anchoring it firmly to the seafloor is expensive. So wind power is restricted to shallow seas. Hence the scarcity of offshore wind turbines around the world—and its complete absence so far from U.S. waters.

Naval architects writing in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy aim to change that. After testing options in a wave tank, they found that floating platforms can support turbines capable of generating five megawatts of power. This is no mean feat considering such turbines are 70 meters tall and have blades the size of a football field.
The architects current platform relies, in essence, on three floating legs—much like a deepwater oil production platform.

But unlike an oil rig, when a wind turbine goes bad, it just adds wreckage to the seafloor, instead of fouling local waters with oil. Perhaps offshore wind is the safer use of coastal resources.

总结:

Cluster         积聚
Offshore      离岸的,向海面的
Anchoring
Restricted     限制
Shallow sea  浅海

Scarcity        缺乏,罕见
aim to          以……为目标
wave tank    造波水池
floating platforms  漂浮的平台
blades         扇片
relies          依靠
essence      基本in essence
oil rig         石油转塔
wreckage   残骸,废物
fouling       污垢
专注就有力量,加油!

7-12 Good-LookingPoliticians Get More TV Facetime

Being beautifulhas its advantages, they can make you more popular even make you seen more competent. Now university of Haifa researchers<have>found that if you are a politician, good looking will also make youseem more news-worthy. Because better looking polscan get more media coverage, findings that appear inthe international journal of press/politics.

People responsesto pretty faces and broadcasters, it seems, are noexception. The researchers surveyed how much TV news coverage was given to every member of the Israeli Knesset on tree local TV channels. At the same time, theyshowed pictures of these elected officials to Dutch students who knows nothing about Israeli legislators. And they asked the students to rate the politicians' physical attractiveness. Theresults: Generally speaking, the Knesset members with the highest marks for appearance appear most often on the nightly news.

There were some exceptions, although female numbers were found be more appealing than males, they receive less TV time. As do younger politicians who were rated hotter than their elders.

The results suggest that though politics isn’tpretty, politician should be. Especially if they want to take full managementof a medium that loves a pretty face.
