Whaddya get when you cross a planet with a comet? Well, HD 209458b looks like a candidate. It’s a gas giant(巨大的) planet also called Osiris, and it’s orbiting so close to its star that some of its atmosphere gets blown away by the stellar wind. Astronomers think that it may then have a tail like a comet’s.

The researchers studied the odd object using the Hubble Space Telescope and reported their finding in the July 10th issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

The planet is about 153 light-years from Earth, and weighs a bit less than Jupiter. But its zippy(敏捷的) orbit is a hundred times closer to its star than Jupiter’s is.

Astronomers got information about the planet by observing its effect on its star’s light when it moved in front of the star from our point of view. They found that most of the gas being driven away from the planet by its star was moving at 22,000 miles per hour. But don’t worry about the planet disappearing entirely any time soon. The current best estimate to complete the vaporization(蒸发,气化): a trillion years.

It's a restful song waves, unless they happen<ed> to be submerging the island you call home. A combination of climate change and bad environmental practices like coral mining is now swamping some low lying lands.

Take the island off the coast of Panama, these islands regularly find themselves inundated with sea water for days and some indigenous inhabitants have begun to move to hill sides on the mainland.

New researches from national center for atmospheric research suggest that climate change is alreday causing even greater sea level rise along the coast line of Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka, Sumatra and Java-- coast lines inhabitants by hundreds of millions of people. The same climate change is also responsible for falling sea level around Seychelles  and potential weakening in the monsoons.

Satellite images and historical photos in other reasearch suggest some Pacific islands have proven resillent to sea level rise, largely thanks to coral continuing to provides steady supply of island building material. But rising sea level thanks to global warming is problem we'd better be prepared for.

A new study finds <out> that mammals with larger brain relative to body size tend to live longer.
It’s been a question(s) evolution (evolutionary biologists have) spend years tried(trying) to answer why would Nature favorite the developed(development of) large brain, Something they (that) require much more time to mature and use up so much more energy.(?)
A(The) Classic thinking has been that larger brains provide the setern kind of competity(sort of cognitive capacity) needed to survive in cetern change(ever-changing) environment like the sudden lost(loss) of food and (or)  the appearances of a new predator.

Now scientist have added a new factor to consider. Large-brained mammals live longer than those with smaller brains and so can not only have more chances to reproduce, but also have a longer reproductive cycle to allow more time for child rearing.

They(The team) analyzes nearly 500 species of mammals across the globe, from bats to felins , , ungulates and marsupials  And They found that deep and larger brains tend to live longer than those with smaller brains. A (the) study was published this week in the jounarl of evolutionary biology. The researchers analyzed other variables that could affect longevity like diet, environment, metabolic rates and found that the most significant predictor was brain size.

The authors stress, however, their finding is a correlation, and does not show causation. So on the one hand a larger brain favors a long lifespan but the opposite could also be true, that a longer lifespan favors a large brain.

In any event it seems size does matter, at least when it comes to grey matter.

这篇的文本好像有些对不上!

A new study finds that mammals with larger brains—relative to body size—tend to live longer.

It’s been a question evolutionary biologists have spent years trying to answer: Why would nature favor the development of a large brain, something that requires more time to mature and uses up(用完,耗尽) so much more energy? The classic thinking has been that large brains provide the sort of cognitive capacity needed to survive in an ever-changing(不断变化的) environment, like the sudden loss of food or the appearance(出现) of a new predator.

Now scientists have added a new factor to consider. The analyse nearly 500 species of mammals from across the globe(地球), from bats to felines(猫科的), ungulates(有蹄类动物) and marsupials(有带的动物). And they found that indeed Large-brained mammals tend to live longer than those with smaller brains-the study was published this week in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, but the ? according to the authors that those mammals with long lifespan ,not only have more chances to reproduce, but also have a longer reproductive cycle to allow more time for child rearing(培养,培育).The researchers analyzed other variables that could affect longevity like diet, environment, metabolic rates and found that the most significant predictor of longevity was brain size.

The authors stress(强调), however, this is just correlation but not causation. So on the one hand it might be that a larger brain favors a long lifespan but the opposite could also be true, that a longer lifespan favors a large brain.

In any event it seems size does matter, at least when it comes to grey matter((.中枢神经系统的)灰质,灰白质),也可指头脑)

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte had to leave Sunday’s game against Tampa in the third inning because of a strained groin. He thus slightly beat the odds. Because his injury happened after the All-Star Game, which was last Tuesday. And a new study finds that more than three-quarters of injuries to major league pitchers during the course of a season occur before the all-star break.
The data on baseball injuries was presented the same day as Pettitte’s early departure at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in Providence, Rhode Island. Which makes sense because that’s Red Sox country and most of the Sox seem to be on the disabled list.
The study looked at all players who were put on the disabled list from 2002 to 2008. Pitchers were 34 percent more likely than non-pitchers to suffer injuries. And pitchers accounted for almost two-thirds of all the time spent too hurt to play.
Most injuries to non-pitchers also happened before the all-star break. Although I wonder if that stat might reflect a greater unwillingness to disable list a player during the pennant drive. Oh, Pettitte’s out for at least a month—providing new data for further research.
