不知可否麻烦一下版主在每次出完题后,附加一个评级,大概估计一下这个听力的难度与t的难度之间的差距。

这个比较困难,你自己倒是可以通过TPO和这个来判断一下难度差距

City planners and citizens alike frequently push for better public transportation. They argue that it can lessen traffic and reduce emissions from cars. Now there’s a new reason to be gung-ho about public transit—it helps make people skinnier. That’s according to a study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. [John MacDonald et al., http://bit.ly/bdR7so]
Researchers surveyed communities in Charlotte, North Carolina. One survey was done before the city had finished building a new light rail system, and the second was done from 12 to 18 months after the rail’s completion. They asked about the residents’ level of physical activity, body mass and use of public transportation before and after the light rail.
Turns out that people who started using light rail to commute had a significant average weight loss over that time—equivalent to about six and a half pounds for a five-foot-five person. The users were also 81 percent less likely to become obese over the time scale surveyed.
The researchers say that an environment based on mass transit influences health, because rail users are get exercise walking to and from stops. And since illness is costly, here’s another way public transit saves money.

gung-ho:extremely or overly zealous or enthusiastic
body mass
light-rail :a means of urban railway transportation using trolley cars

Over the years, people have put forth a lot of theories to explain why intelligence differs from person to person and even on the world. Health, wealth, schooling, nutrition, even climate have all come up. Now researchers of the University of New Mexico suggest the parasites may play a role. They found the prevalence of infectious disease can be a powerful predictor of the regional smarts. The work appears on the proceedings of Royal Society.

It takes a lot of energy to build and operate a human brain. This needy organ commends 87 percent of body’s metabolic budget in the infants, that's about 25 percent in adults. So things that sap our energy are likely to hinder the intellectual growth. That's why malnourishments is not good for the mind.

But what about parasites? Fighting off nasty bugs can take a lot out of you. So scientists got to wondering why excessive infections may correlate with the impaired of cognitive developments. Looking at the IQs around the world, they found high-level of infectious disease go hand in hand with lower averaged national intelligence

Although the authors have not demonstrated the cause-and-effect, it's nice to think that taking down the parasites could bring up our IQs.

问题:时态,数字,介词。整句听总是遗漏细节。

More carbon dioxide emissions lead to more CO2 dissolving in the oceans, which turns the water acidic. Though sour seas slow the growth of corals and it turns out acidic sea water also makes clown fish and damselfish suicidally(恁是写成了suicidely) bold and reckless, according to a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers used IPCC estimates (用在这里有点不是很对,感觉) of future CO2 emissions to mix up seawater with varing (听成variant) degrees of acidity, similar to what we might see 50 to 100 years. Fish larvae(不知道其复数) raised on the most acidic batch of seawater instinctively avoid predators at first, but soon were actually attracted the predators’ scent, probably due to some of impairment of the olfactory system. When those same fish were placed in the experimental reefs, near the Great Barrier Reef, they disregarded the safety straying from the protective coral and cruising predators snatched up nearly all of them within 30 hours. Over the same period only 10 percent of the fish raised in seawater of today’s acidity were eaten. A disruption as big as(这里真像 the biggest ) climate change is bound to challenge numerous species. This study suggests that some challenges will be as unexpected as a cunning predator.

小词容易听错,连读要很仔细听!词的形式也非常容易出错,比如 dissolving, suicidally, larvae(GRE word), straying....

决定有时间就把前面的都补上。

100612

In 1934 when a West Chester stockbroker Bill Wilson promised his wife he’d never drink again. Then during the following spring, he nearly fell off the wagon. And in a desperate move, he called local surgeon and drunk Bob Smith. It was that conversation that marched the first meeting of Alcoholic Anonymous. Celebrating the 75th anniversary this year, AA with its 12 guiding principles to sobriety is a hallmark constitution for addicts. But does it work? Well 2006 studies published in Alcoholism: Clinical on Spiritual Experimental Research followed 349 drinkers over five years. And they found success rates correlated with the frequency and length of  the AA attendants. Of those who dropped out AA after the first year, only 43 percent were still sober at year five. Of those who went to sixty meetings per year for all five years, 73 percent continued to abstain and was 79 percent of those who attended 200 meetings annually, had gone into remission by year 5. Maybe most surprising though, it was that 61 percent of those who attended 200 meetings in the first year, but then dropped down 6 meetings in near five were still able to stay dry. But such results show a correlation. And it’s important to remember the results like most things in life for very much based on the individual circumstances and personalities. Nonetheless, most long-term studies conclude that one sticks with AA for the long haul at least five years, then chances for permanent abstinence steadily increase.

这一篇还是有一定难度的,参考文章中也有些明显小错误。

We might think that bullies are quite different from the victims of bullying. But those who become either a bully or a victim actually share similar outlooks and have similar difficulties dealing with their environments. There is, however, one significant risk factor for bullying.

Researchers reviewed and analyzed 153 studies and found that both victims and bullies have poor problem-solving skills within social situations. They also found that boys bully more than girls but here’s a significant point:   those who do poorly in school are at a higher risk of becoming a bully. The research was published this week in the journal School Psychology Quarterly.

Typical bullies have negative attitudes toward others, feel badly about themselves, and most likely grew up in a home with conflict. Victims share much of same, negative attitude, conflict in the family.

But the dividing characteristic: bullies dislike school and tend to perform worse academically than those who later become victims.

Most current solutions try to enforce anti-bullying rules or simply remove the bully from bullying situations. The authors note, however, that the most successful intervention is three-pronged. They suggest simultaneously targeting the areas that may be influencing the potential bully or victim in the first place: the parents, the peers and the schools .

Sometimes it seems there’s only so much we can learn about dinosaurs. We can’t know what their coloration looked like, we can’t watch them interact with each other. We can only extrapolate from their remains. But now scientists say we can discern a hint of dinosaur movement – from ostriches.

The giant, flightless birds still have feathered forelimbs that scientists assumed were now solely used for display and temperature regulation. But researchers from Germany and Belgium carefully observed hand-raised ostriches, and modeled their movement in the surrounding air streams. They found that far from being useless in movement, the leftover wings help ostriches break quickly, turn, and zig-zag. The scientists presented their findings at the Society for Experimental Biology’s annual conference in Prague.

Ostriches are descendants of dinosaurs, and the researchers liken ostrich movements to those of bipedal dinosaurs. Paleontologists had previously thought that some dinosaurs’ small forelimbs had served to catch insects or rip flesh. But this new research shows dinosaurs may have used their forelimbs to help with quickness, stability and agility. Further study in this field could lead to more accurate ideas of what it once looked like when dinosaurs went dashing through their prehistoric landscape.
