Some bacteria have adapted to super cold environments for millions of years. And scientists have isolated some of the essential genes that allow bacteria to tolerate the harsh living conditions, because these same genes might help in the creation of vaccines. The investigators published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences.

Researchers from the University of Victoria and British Columbia isolated temperature sensitive genes from some bacteria that thrive in the frigid Arctic; they inserted nine of these cold loving genes into a bacteria pathogen called Francisella Tularensis. At about room temperature, the cells propagated. But when they had to cope with warmth equivalent to the core body temps mammals, the bacteria died. So the scientists injected these engineered pathogens into rats and mice at cool parts of the body, such as the fleshy regions of the ear and the base of the tail. The bacteria survived near the skin but perished prior to reaching the internal organs. And before they expired, the bacteria generated a protective immune response in the animals. The scientists hope to use the tool to create live vaccines that will confer immunity before they die from our too warm welcome.

With the World Cup soccer tournament underway in South Africa. A couple of things for the science-interested audience to watch for. First the game will feature a new ball called jabulani, the Zulu word for celebrate. And some players think something foul is afoot. They contend that the ball doesn’t behave the way in the normal soccer ball should; that even turns the wrong way in the midair. And did this which makes ball claims that the player’s complaining or have contracts with the ditist competitors. The Sports Technology Research Group at England’s Loughborough University designed the ball. The sections aren’t stitch together anymore instead the seams are glued or heat-sealed. The group leader Andy Harland told the telegraph newspaper, we have created the ball that is almost perfectly round and more accurate than ever before. While millions of soccer fans will ultimately decide the latter. Also watch for the effects of the altitude, some the games in South Africa will be played elevations over a mile high, which could make catching one’s breath the primary goal.

City planners and citizens are frequently pushing public transportation, / City planners and citizens alikely frequently push public transportation, they argue that could/ can lessen traffic and reduce emissions from cars.  Now there is a new reason to gung-ho about public transit,  it helps make people skimmier/ skinner, that's according to a study published in an arguest/ August issue of American Journal of preventive Medicine. Researchers surveyed community of Channle Kolina/ Charlotte, North Carolina,  one survey was done before the city had finished building a new light rail system, and the second was done from tweleve to eighteen months after the rails accomplished/ the rail's completion. They asked about residences level of  physical activity, body month/ mass and the use of traffic transportation before and after the light rail, turns out people started using light rail to commute had significant avarage weight loss over that time equivalent to 6.5 pounds for 5-foot-5 person. The users also 81% less likely to be obese over the time skill/ scale surveyed. Reserchers say environment based on month/ mass transit influences health, because rail users are geting excersice walking to and from stops. Since elness/illness is costly, there/ here is another way public transit saves money.

Doctors like to think that they’ll turn in colleagues who are doing a particularly bad job. But it’s not so straightforward when physicians are faced with such a colleague, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital surveyed almost 2,000 physicians in a variety of fields around the country. About two-thirds said that they should and would report an impaired or incompetent colleague. Seventeen percent said they know of a physician who should be reported, and about 67 percent of that group did issue a complaint.
Minority physicians or docs in small practices were less likely to blow the whistle than hospital staff. They thought it would do no good, someone else would deal with it, or that there would be retribution.
The researchers were particularly concerned that one third of all docs surveyed didn’t think their incompetent colleagues should be reported. And that a third of physicians who actually saw someone perform poorly in fact did not say anything. The study authors urge more education on the subject, and protection and privacy for whistleblowers. All in keeping with the Hippocratic oath: first, do no harm.

Clothing is so yesterday. I mean, really, what can it do? It can’t pick up sound, or beep(哔哔响) at us if something’s wrong. Or can it? M.I.T. researchers say they’ve developed a fiber that would allow clothing to eventually do those things. Their study is in the journal Nature Materials.

A big key to the fiber is a plastic commonly used in microphones. Its particular molecular structure involves a lopsided(倾向一方的) arrangement of fluorine atoms(氟原子)on one side and hydrogen atoms on the other. That asymmetry(不对称) makes the plastic piezoelectric(压电的): it changes shape when it encounters an electric field.

So any electric current(电流) will then cause the fibers to vibrate. The fibers could act as(扮演)
a microphone or a speaker, depending on whether the vibrations were being recorded or amplified.

The clothing mic could capture speech, sure. But it could also monitor health by detecting almost imperceptible(察觉不到的) sounds from the body. Sounds like blood flow, which could make a shirt a 24-hour blood-pressure monitor. So maybe someday, your clothes will say: “I detect a rise in blood pressure. Please sit down.”

总结:

fluorine atoms(氟原子)
asymmetry(不对称)

imperceptible(察觉不到的)
