Teachers get exasperated at students. They don't pay attention; they are sleepy; they have bad attitudes. But improvement could be a matter of timing. Just start school later. That's according to a study in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Beginning at adolescence, kids have what's called "a delayed sleep phase," where they start to sleep later and sleep later in the morning. And they need plenty, about nine and a quarter hours a night. The researchers evaluated 201 Rhode Island high school students whose schools pushed back its start time from 8 to 8:30. The kids completed a sleep habit survey before and after the time change. After the delayed start, the percentage of students who said they got at least 8 hours of sleep a night jumped from about 16 to 55%. Class attendance improved, and there were fewer visits to the health center for fatigue-related complaints. Plus, the number of students who said that they felt unhappy, depressed, annoyed, or irritated dropped significantly. Before the study, teachers, coaches, and administrators all resisted the later start. After, nearly all voted to keep it in place. A half-hour change for happier and better students ,seems like a good time for all.

总结:
adolescence和fatigue的读音听不出来

收获:
keep in place 表示把我事物确定下来,可以用到作文中

When it comes to elections, sometimes we vote with our heads and sometimes with our hearts. But scientists at Stanford say we might also be voting with our pompoms(大型机关炮). Because they’ve found that our behavior at the polls(民意测验) is influenced by the results of local sporting events, work published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Humans are emotional creatures. And our strong feelings about one thing can spread to another. So the Stanford scientists wondered whether events that are unrelated to government performance might sway the way people feel about their elected officials. And what could be less relevant to the workings in Washington or your state capital than college football?

The researchers looked at the election results from 20 years’ worth of presidential, senatorial and gubernatorial (州长的,地方长官的)races. And they found that a home-team win before the election gave the incumbent(在职的,现任的) a boost of almost two percentage points. The more beloved the team, the bigger the bounce(上升).

And it’s not just football. In a separate survey, the scientists found that NCAA college basketball results affected presidential approval ratings. So next election day, you might think about practicing a little separation of stadium(运动场) and state.

More carbon dioxide emissions lead to more CO2 dissolving in the oceans, which turns the water acidic. Those sour seas slow the growth of corals. And it turns out acidic seawater also makes clownfish and damselfish suicidally bold and reckless, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers used IPCC estimates of future CO2 emissions to mix up seawater with varying degrees of acidity, similar to what we might see in 50 to 100 years. Fish larvae raised on the most acidic batch of seawater instinctively avoided predators at first, but soon were actually attracted to the predator's scent—probably due to some impairment of the olfactory system. When those same fish were placed in experimental reefs near the Great Barrier Reef, they disregarded safety, straying from the protective coral. And cruising predators snatched up nearly all of them within 30 hours. Over the same period, only 10 percent of the fish raised in seawater of today’s acidity were eaten.

A disruption as big as climate change is bound to challenge numerous species. This study suggests that some challenges will be as unexpected as a cunning predator.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that steadily erodes the ability for nerve cells to communicate and this leads to all kinds of neurological symptoms, often slowly progressing to severe cognitive and physical disability. But one of the most common symptoms is depression. It’s often attributed to the mental toll of managing the disease which has no cure. But recent research published in the journal Biological Psychiatry describes a physical connection between MS and mood.

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientists found that the hippocampus, the brain area responsible for long-term memory, is smaller in people suffering from MS than in healthy adults. They found a connection between this atrophy in the hippocampus and a hyperactivitiy in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (or HPA axis) in MS sufferers. The HPA axis is part of the neuroendocrine(神经内分泌) system that manages stress.

The authors note that this link between hyperactivity(活动过度) in the HPA and an atrophied(萎缩的) hippocampus is consistently seen in those with chronic depression, yet this correlation has never been studied in MS patients.

The next step, of course, is to compare depressed populations-those with MS and those without—to look for any significant differences in how depression progresses in each case.

It's the plotline worthy an action film-galaxies, violently torn apart, smashing into one another, leaving remnants of themselves behind billions of years later. That's the scene that accounts for some of the oldest stars in our own milky way galaxy according to the work published on the Journal monthly notices of the royal astronomical society.

Researchers ran a huge computer simulation of the evolution of the universe starting shortly after the big bang, more than 13 billion years ago, it's the most detailed model ever produced and allowed a close examination of the makeup of the Milky Way’s stellar halo. The stellar halo is debris that surrounds our familiar white swirl of stars. The halo is much larger and much older than the Milky Way itself.

And the simulations show the ancient stars in the halo were formed from young small galaxies that collided and left behind fragments of themselves, as opposed to those stars actually being born in the Milky Way when it started forming ten billion years ago. The researchers say the scene depicts the dramatic and violent clashes that were taking place long long ago in the galaxy not very far away.
