Doctors like to think that they'll turn in colleagues who were doing a particularly bad job. But it’s not so straightforward when physicians are facing with such a colleague. According to a study published in the journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital surveyed almost 2,000 physicians and a variety of fields around the country. About 2 thirds said they should and would report an impaired or incompetent colleagues. 17 percent said they had no physicians who should be reported and about 67 percent of that group did issue a complaint. Minority physicians or docs in a small practices were less likely to blow the whistle than hospital staff. They thought it would do no good. Someone else will deal with it or that there would be retribution. The researchers were particularly concerned that one third of all docs surveyed didn’t think their incompetent colleagues should be reported and that a third of physicians who actually saw someone perform poorly in fact did not say anything. The study authors urge more education on the subject and protection and privacy for whistle blowers. All in keeping with the Hippocratic(确实像 hypocritical )oath first do no harm.

It’s probably happen to you--- a friend says I know this place like the back of my hand and then proceeds to get you hopelessly lost. Well, it could be that they really did know it like the back of their hand, because researchers have found that people don’t actually know their hands as well as they think they do. The study appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

We’ll have mental representations of our body parts, so when our hands or feet are out of sight, we still know pretty much where they are and what they look like. But just how accurate is our mental picture? Scientists have volunteers place one hand palm down under a board, and they asked subjects to guess by pointing to the board with the other hand where they hidden knuckles and fingertips lay. The results, participants thought their hands were two thirds wider and one third shorter than they really were. And their fingers length estimated to get worse as they move the way from their thumbs. That’s interesting because finger sensitivity declines as you head towards the pinky. So our mental body map seems to reflect our ability to feel. Oh, and for their gripping results, let’s give the researchers a hand.

When astronaut Alan Shepard took his first swing at golf ball on the moon, he hit more dirt than ball. And the dust he kicked up reinforced the idea that the moon is one big sandtrap. But looks can be deceiving. Now scientists reanalyzing lunar samples, say that our satellite is at least 100 times wetter than we thought. The results appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Astronaut manning the Apollo missions brought home plenty of moon rocks. And in forty years of looking at those samples, noone ever found the trace of water. That could be because the collision that made the moon in the first place was so hot that volatile elements like hydrogen, a key component to H2O, largely burnt away. Now using a technique that can identify elements present in just a few parts per billion. Scientists have taken another look at the three lunar samples, two from the Apollo missions and one meteorite found in Africa. And they detected hydroxyl, the HO, that’s left behind when a rock crystallizes from the magma containing water. The results suggest that water may be ubiquitous in the interior in the moon, although this is probably not enough to qualify as a water hazard.

Paraphrase: while most of doctors think imcompetent colleagues should be reported and fired, one third physicians in a research would not do anything when they were facd with such colleagues, because in their opinion, blowing the whistle will do no good, also others would resolve that.  A prodigious amount of physicians know of colleagues who do such a poor job that should be reported.  In view of this situation, the author advocates more education on the subject and measures to protect and encourage whistleblowers.

Whaddya (我写的是这个What do you,哈哈 )get when you across a planet with a comet? Well, HD209458b looks like a candidate. It’s a gas giant planet, also called Osiris. And it’s orbiting so close to the star that some of the atmosphere gets blown away by the stellar wind. The astronomers think that may then have a tail like a comet‘s. The researchers study the odd object using the Hubble space telescope and reported their finding in July 10th Issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

The planet is about 153 light years from the Earth, and weighs (虽然觉得不是,还是写了way’s )a bit less than Jupiter. But it zippy orbit is 100 times closer to its star than Jupiter’s is. Astronomers got information about the planet by observing its effect on the star’s light when it moved in front of the star from our point of view. They found that most of the gas being driven away from the planet by its star with (我听的是with,这里用was在语法上貌似不对) moving to 22,000 miles per hour. But don’t worry about the planet disappearing entirely anytime soon, the current best estimate of complete the vaporization, a trillion years.

Clothing is so yesterday, I mean what can it do? It can’t pick up sound or beep, or something was wrong, or can it. MIT researchers say they have developed fiber that would allow clothing eventually do those things. Their study is in the Journal Nature Materials. A big key to the fiber is a plastic commonly used in microphones. Its particular molecular structures involves a lopsided fluorine atoms arrangement on one side, and hydrogen atoms on the other, that asymmetry makes plastic piezoelectric /听成了piece of electric/, it changes shape when it encounters an electric field. So any electric current will cause the fiber to vibrate. The fiber could act as microphone or speaker, depending on whether the vibrations are being recorded or amplified. The clothing mic / 听成了clever fiber/ could capture speeches, sure, but it also could monitor health by detecting almost imperceptible sounds from the body, sounds like blood flow, which could make a shirt a twenty four hours blood pressure monitor. So maybe someday your clothes will say I detect a rise in blood pressure, please sit down.

Whaddya(其实就是what do you) get when you cross a planet with a comet? Well, HD 209458b looks like a candidate. It’s a gas giant planet also called Osiris, and it’s oribiting so close to its star that some of its atmosphere gets blown away by the stellar wind. Astronomers think that it may then have a tail like a comet’s.
The researchers studied the odd object using the Hubble Space Telescope and reported their finding in the July 10th issue of The Astrophysical Journal.
The planet is about 153 light-years from Earth, and weighs a bit less than Jupiter. But its zippy orbit is a hundred times closer to its star than Jupiter’s is.
Astronomers got information about the planet by observing its effect on its star’s light when it moved in front of the star from our point of view. They found that most of the gas being driven away from the planet by its star was moving at 22,000 miles per hour. But don’t worry about the planet disappearing entirely any time soon. The current best estimate to complete the vaporization: a trillion years.

A big key to the fiber is a plastic commonly used in microphones. Its particular molecular structure involves a lopsided arrangement of fluorine atoms on one side and hydrogen atoms on the other. That asymmetry makes the plastic piezoelectric: it changes shape when it encounters an electric field.

So any electric current will then cause the fibers to vibrate. The fibers could act as a (连读microphone or a speaker, depending on whether the vibrations were being recorded or amplified.

Which of these guys would you guess is stronger? Him--- one of us is in deep trouble, or him----I’m having the party, and you’re invited. If you chose Arnold over Pee Wee, it’s not just because you're an astute student popular culture. A new study shows that people are able to accurately judge a man’s strength from his voice. The work appears in the Proceedings of the Royal Society.

The meek may inherit the Earth, but the powerful tend to prevail in physical conflicts. So, it’s not surprising that humans evolved the ability to accurately size up their potential opponents. Such assessments usually spring from visual inspection. But what if it’s dark out, or your rivals are at distance, or on the phone? Will auditory information suffice. Scientists asked undergraduates to listen to recording of men from a variety of cultures from Romanian college students to Argentinean goat herders. They found subjects could accurately predict upper body strength based on voice alone, even when a voice from an unfamiliar culture. So if you are going to pick a fight sight unseen. Listen first, just to make sure the other guy doesn’t sound like this----you better wipe that smile off your face, or I’ll do it for you.

这里make a shirt 不是单独说的,要把整句连起来理解,即 Sounds like blood flow which could make a shirt a 24-hour blood-pressure monitor.
