Crohn’s disease is a real pain in the gut. This inflammatory disorder can lead to some serious intestinal difficulties. And heredity is partly to blame. Some thirty different genes enhance susceptibility, but not everyone having the genes got the Crohn’s.

Now scientists find those with one type of the risky gene may also need to catch the virus to trigger the disease. The result appears on the Journal Cell.

Doctor Darks long suspected some sort of virus may precipitate autoimmune disorders, like lupus or multiple sclerosis. But in a case of the chrome, researchers stumbled the connection by accident.

They were studying mice that carry a version of the gene associated with the Crohn’s. His animals develop gut problems, similar to those seen in humans'. Then the researchers started keeping the animals in clean cages, really clean cages, in which the bedding, food and water are sterilized. The squeaky clean mice, even with the risky gene, stay healthy. But when scientists expose them to a common virus, they come down with mouse Crohn’s.

The researcher shows some illnesses may require the combination of genetic predisposition and infection. Infro which would lead to new treatment strategies.

问题:对单词发音不熟,另外这篇专有名词比较多,朴实的MICE也没听出来,大体意思还是懂了。

Squeaky clean: 【口】纯洁的;无瑕疵的
Intestinal: 【解】肠的
Autoimmune: 【生】自我免疫的

Can north American and pacific plates meet in California at the San Andrews fault, the place Grand pass each other there as much as ancient half a year, until the plates jam. Then energy builds up and eventually they lurch, an earthquake. But on some active portions of the fault, the plates just tend to cripple along without many violent jerks. All thanks turns out to a little mineral loop according the study in the journal Geology.

Geologist got rock core from 2 miles down in the active fault zone. They looked at the fault rocks from the electron-microscope and they found incredibly thin coating of clay polish on the rocks. They say that clay layer apparently lubricates the plates, like greasing ball-bearings. And that is deposited there by mineral rich water, soak into the faults note as crannies. As the fault moves, it would be new craps for the fluids to get into, which means more loop and more smooth creeping.

The process has been going on for millions of years. So given enough time, parts of the faults seem to develop their own earthquake prevention mechanism. But for other sections, the clock is still tickling.

ball bearing:滚珠,轴承
cranny:裂隙

The stink of exhaust, the mid-numbing tedium of traffic, parking lots blighting the central city real estate. The urban sins of the automobile are numerous indeed.

As more people move to city and get economic wherewithal to purchase an automobile, will we be increasingly dependent on cars for our transportation and status symbols?

A new thought experiment on display at the Center for architecture in New York city offer the alternative version of city in 2030. By that time, more than 60 percent of humanity, 5 billion people, may live in cities.

The architects recommend careful use of express bus rapid transit, the cheapest transportation option and increase capacity for bicyclists and pedestrians. That may help alleviate the problems like highway blocking access to waterfront in cityscapes from Ahmedabad to Rio de Janeiro.

For example in China, simply expanding the city of Guangzhou’s bus rapid transit system which already carries 8 00,000 passengers a day, could help recreate what used to be a vibrant shopping district before an elevated highway shrouded it in gloom.

Some form of the automobile will likely be around in 2030. But that doesn't mean we have to build our city for its comfort rather than ours.

Cityscape: 都市风景

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that steadily erodes the ability for nerve cells to communicate and this lead to all kinds of neurological symptoms often slowly progressing to severe cognitive and physical disability. But one of the most common symptoms is depression. And it’s often attributed to the mental toll of managing the disease which has no cure. But recent research published in the journal (貌似没有听到) Biological Psychiatry describes a physical connection between MS and mood. Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging ( MRI), scientists found that hippocampus, the brain area responsible for long-term memory is smaller in people suffering from MS than in healthy adults. And they found connection between this atrophy in hippocampus, and hyperactivity in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis(材料中就是没有读到), also known as HPA and MS sufferers. Now the HPA is the part of neuroendocrine system that manages stress. And the authors note that this link between hyperactivity in the HPA, and in atrophied hippocampus. It’s also consistently seen in those with chronic depression. Yet this correlation has never been studied in MS patients. The next step of course is to compare depressed populations those with MS and those without. To look for any significant differences in how depression progresses in each case.

这次的范文中貌似有点地方和读的有些出入,前面我表明的,还有后面 It's also consistently ,当然这些都不是大问题了。

发现天天补作业啊,只有晚上有点时间,加油!

Later School Start Time Leads To Better Students

我依然找不到txt版的text,直接粘贴了,选中可见:
Teachers get exasperated at students—they don’t pay attention, they’resleepy, they have bad attitudes. But improvement could be a matter oftiming—just start school later. That’s according to a study in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
Beginning at adolescence, kids have what’s called a delayed sleep phase, where they start sleep later and sleep later in the morning. Andthey need plenty—about nine-and-a-quarter hours a night.
The researchers evaluated 201 Rhode Island high school students whoseschool pushed back its start time from 8 to 8:30. The kids completed asleep habits survey before and after the time change.
After the delayed start, the percentage of students who said they gotat least eight hours of sleep a night jumped from about 16 to 55percent. Class attendance improved, and there were fewer visits to thehealth center for fatigue-related complaints. Plus, the number ofstudents who said they felt unhappy, depressed, annoyed or irritateddropped significantly.
Before the study, teachers, coaches and administrators all resisted thelater start. After, nearly all voted to keep it in place. A half-hourchange for happier, better students? Seems like a good time for all.

Even if you have a light hand with a salt shaker, you probably get lots of sodium in processed or restaurant meals. But sodiem can contribute to high blood pressure and increase the risk for heart disease and failure, stroke and kidney disease. So how many of us are limiting our sodium intake to recommended levels, which scientists say could reduce new cases of coronary heart disease by 60 to 120 thousand per year.

Researchers at the center for disease control analyzed the date from the national health and nutrition examination survey from 2005 to 2006, the most recent year available.Nearly 4000 adults over20 years old complete the physical and had their blood taken and answer the survey about what they’d eaten over the past 24 hours. This food survey was taken again about a week later.

According to the data, less than 10 percent of adults are limiting their sodium to recommended levels. The survey appears on the Journal of morbidity and mortality weekly report.

The researchers suggest that food manufacturers reduce the sodium in process foods and that consumers modify their eating habits which may mean doing more cooking at home where you have control of the salt.

Those of you following the world cup know that in this stage there can be no more drawls. Ties are broken during overtime play or in the penalty kick shootout in which the goal keeper's ability to anticipate the ball's flight can mean the difference between the victory and elimination. Now scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have discovered how a kicker's body can betray whether he is aiming left or right.

In a penalty shot it's kicker vs goal keeper and with shooter standing just 12 yards from the goal that ball can touch the net in about half a second. That's faster than the goal keeper launch himself from the goal center to either post which means the goal keeper starts moving before the kicker's foot meets the ball. And he has to guess correctly which way to dive.

To figure out how good goalies might up their odds, scientists attached motion detectors to college-level penalty kickers. And they found a handful of indicators that reliably predict kick direction such as the angles of kicker's hips and how he plants his supporting foot. Good goalies may be able to read those subtle cues, meaning that use their hands and their heads.

Goalie:守门员
up their odds:提高他们的准确率

问题:介词像in, at, during , of, with 听不出来,数字总是听错。还有老问题单词发音不熟,这次的是subtle, plant, dive, shot/shoot.

Die-hard advocates of alternate energy might fantasize(假想) about cars that could one day run on water. But scientists in India have gone a step further. They’ve mathematically modeled an engine that should allow a motorcycle to run on air—compressed air, that is. Their design is described in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.

The hunt is on for alternatives to fossil fuels. Internal combustion engines convert the energy in gasoline’s molecular bonds into motion. But what if there were another way to make engine parts move?

Scientists in India were thinking of a well-directed wind. And after crunching the numbers on pressure and flow, they’ve concluded that a tank of compressed air could generate enough power to run a motorcycle for up to 40 minutes. The air would spin a turbine(涡轮), which would then get things rolling.
Of course they’d need to design a tank that could store enough air to fuel a long haul. Current cylinders would need changing or charging after about 20 miles. Which would still cover a lot of commutes and trips to the grocery store.

And you’d still need to get air in the tank in a green way. Maybe a solar-powered, geothermal, wind-driven compressor

总结一下自己的问题:
有些词听着耳熟,但是跟实际单词关联不起来,这个要好好加强一下
还有一些时态的运用,类似:you'd ,they've,听得时候没有注意
