We might think that bullies are pretty different from the victims of bullying. But those who either become a bully or victim actually share similar outlooks and have similar difficulties dealing with their environment. But there is, however, one significant risk factor for bullying. Researchers reviewed and analyzed 153 studies over the last 30 years and found that both victims and bullies have poor problem-solving skills within social situations. But they also found that boys bully more than girls. And here is significant point—those who do poorly in school are at higher risk of becoming a bully. The research was published this week in the Journal School Psychology Quarterly note typical bullies have negative attitudes towards others, feel badly on themselves and most likely to grow up a homely conflict. And victims share much the same, this negative attitude and conflict in the family. The dividing characteristic, however, is that bullies dislike school and tend to perform worse academically than those who later become victims. Most of the current interventions try to enforce anti-bully rules are simply removed the bully from the bullying situation. The authors noted, however, the most successful intervention is 3-Pronged. They suggest targeting simultaneously the areas that may be influencing the potential bully or victim in the first place. And these are the parents, the peers and the schools.

Being beautiful has its advantages. It can make you more popular, even make you seem more competent. Now, University of Haifa(海法,以色列港市) researchers have found that, if you’re a politician, good looks will also make you seem more newsworthy. Because better-looking pols get more media coverage, findings that appear in the International Journal of Press/Politics.

People respond to pretty faces. And broadcasters, it seems, are no exception. The researchers surveyed how much TV news coverage was given to every member of the Israeli Knesset on three local channels. At the same time, they showed pictures of these elected officials to Dutch students who knew nothing about Israeli legislators. And they asked the students to rate the politicians’ physical attractiveness. The results: generally speaking, the Knesset members with the highest marks for appearance appear most often on the nightly news.

There were some exceptions. Although female members were found to be more appealing than males, they receive less TV time. As do younger politicians, who were rated hotter than their elders.

The results suggest that although politics isn’t pretty, politicians should be. Especially if they want to take full advantage of a medium that loves a pretty face.

总结:
不熟悉的单词/表达方式

Newsworthy         有新闻价值的
Press/Politics        这个表达方式要注意(slash 右斜杠;dash 破折号)
better-looking pols  外表较出众的(pols没听出来)
Israeli Knesset       以色列议会
Rate                     评分(没联系到这个词)

Even if you have a light hand with the salt shaker, you probably get lots of sodium in processed or restaurant meals. But sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, and increases the risk for heart disease and failure, stroke, and kidney disease. So how many of us are limiting our sodium intake to recommended levels—which scientists say could reduce new cases of coronary heart disease by 60-to-120 thousand per year.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005/2006, the most recent years available. Nearly 4,000 adults over 20-years-old completed a physical, had their blood pressure taken and answered a survey of what they’d eaten over the past 24. This food survey was taken again about a week later.

According to the data, less than 10 percent of adults are limiting their sodium to recommended levels. The study appears in the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The researchers suggest that food manufacturers reduce the sodium in processed foods. And that consumers modify their eating habits—which might mean doing more cooking at home, where you have control of the salt.

总结:
sodium
stroke            中风

kidney
coronary        冠状的

Morbidity and Mortality     发病率和死亡率
in processed   加工

Some bacteria have adapted to super cold environments for millions of years. And scientists have isolated some of the essential genes that allow bacteria to tolerate their harsh living conditions—because these same genes might help in the creation of new vaccines. The investigators published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Researchers from the University of Victoria in British Columbia [and the NIH Laboratory of Intracellular Parasites] isolated temperature-sensitive genes from some bacteria that thrive in the frigid Arctic. They inserted nine of these cold-loving genes into a bacterial pathogen called Francisella tularensis. At about room temperature, the cells propagated. But when they had to cope with warmth ba equivalent to the core body temps of mammals, the bacteria died.

So the scientists injected these engineered pathogens into rats and mice at cool parts of the body, such as the fleshy regions of the ear and the base of the tail. The bacteria survived near the skin, but perished prior to reaching the internal organs. And before they expired, the bacteria generated a protective immune response in the animals. The scientists hope to use this tool to create live vaccines that will confer immunity—before they die from our too warm welcome.

The stink(发出恶臭的)of exhaust, the mind-numbing(思想麻木) tedium of traffic, parking lots blighting(打击,不良影响) central city real estate. The urban sins(过失,罪过) of the automobile are numerous indeed.

As more people move to cities and gain the economic wherewithal(必要的基金)to purchase an automobile, will we be increasingly dependent on cars for our transportation and status symbols(社会地位象征)?

A new thought experiment on display at the Center for Architecture in New York City offers an alternative vision for the cities of 2030. By that time, more than 60 percent of humanity—5 billion people—may live in cities.

The architects recommend careful use of express bus rapid transit—the cheapest public transportation option—and increased capacity for bicyclists(骑自行车的人) and pedestrians(步行者). That may help alleviate problems like highways blocking access to waterfront(水边码头) in cityscapes from Ahmedabad to Rio de Janeiro.

For example, in China, simply expanding the city of Guangzhou's bus rapid transit system, which already carries 800,000 passengers a day, could help recreate what used to be a vibrant(振动) shopping district before an elevated highway shrouded(覆盖)it in gloom.

Some form of the automobile will likely be around in 2030, but that doesn't mean we have to build our cities for its comfort rather than ours.

总结:
