另,有人知道今天(2010-06-17)的那句“as a kid in Portugal”的出处么?
先谢过~
iAzure 发表于 2010-6-17 20:44

没有什么出处,这个as a kind in Portugal是说“当XX是个小孩在葡萄牙的时候”。
就是后文那个PROFESSOR ,这句话就是说那个PROFESSOR小时候很PUZZLE这个问题而已。

Which of these guys would you guess is stronger? Him?
“One of us is in deep trouble. Or him? I was having a party, and you are invited. If you choose Arnold over Pee Wee,(竟然是人名) it's not just because you are an astute student of popular culture. And new study shows people are able to accurately judge a man's strength from his voice. The work appears in the proceedings of the Royal society.

The meek make may inherit the Earth. But the powerful tend to prevail in physical conflicts. So it's not surprising that humans have evolved the ability to accurately size up their potential opponents. Such assessments usually spring from visual inspection, but what if it's dark out, or your rivals are at a distance or on the phone? Will auditory information suffice?

Scientists ask undergraduates to listen to recordings of men from a variety of cultures: from Romanian college students to Argentinian gold herders and they found that subjects could accurately predict upper body strength based on voice alone, even when that voice was from an unfamiliar culture.

So if you are gonna pick a flight sight unseen, listen first, just to make sure the other guy doesn’t sound like this, " you better wipe that smile off your face or I will do it for you"

问题:这篇太糟糕了。没什么难词,但就是听不出来。。最大的问题还是对单词的发音不敏感。第二是词组搭配见得少,即使听出来了都不确定。

Pee Wee Herman saying, “I’m having a party, and you’re invited!”

Pee-wee Herman:
Pee-wee Herman is a comic fictional character created and portrayed by American comedian Paul Reubens. He is best known for his two television series and film series during the 1980s. The child-like Pee-wee Herman character developed as a stage act that quickly led to an HBO special in 1981. As the stage performance gained further popularity, Reubens took the character to motion picture with Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, toning down the adult innuendo for the appeal of children. This paved the way for Pee-wee's Playhouse, an Emmy Award winning children's series that ran on CBS from 1986-1991. Another film, Big Top Pee-wee, was released in 1988.

The meek may inherit the Earth.

此处出处为《圣经新约》,马太福音:“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”也有版本是“Congratulations to the gentle! They will inherit the earth.

John Wayne saying, “You better wipe that smile off your face or I’ll do it for you.”

"Wipe that smile off your face!" - the Psychology of Smirking
If you (or someone you know) smirks, when you are feeling affronted or assaulted, something that can help you "wipe that smile off your face" and replace it with a softer, kinder and even loving smile is to stop and just listen to where the other person is truly coming from.  If you do that, you will often discover that they are not trying to condemn you, but are merely trying to deal with their own confusion and fear about something they are looking to you to help them understand or solve. And when they're not, they're usually dealing with someone beating up on them to beat up on you.Just because you're on the defensive, doesn't mean that anyone is attacking you.

John Wayne
JOHN WAYNE 1907

You know saving the rainforest is good for biodiversity. But it may also be a boon to human health. That's because less clear-cutting may mean less malaria, according to a paper out this week in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. Researchers looked at stats for 2006 from 54 health districts in western Brazil. The sites had more than 15,000 cases of malaria. The investigators compared those cases to deforestation in the same health districts over the previous 10 years. They found that a loss of just four percent of forest cover was associated with nearly 50 percent more malaria cases. And malaria risk was highest five to 10 years after the jungle was cleared. Not all mosquitoes carry malaria. But the human-loving species Anopheles darlingi does, and previous studies have shown that it thrives in disturbed areas. In fact, you're over 200 times more likely to find one of them biting you in a clearing than you are deep in the jungle, where other more benign species compete with them for blood. So how much clear-cutting is too much? We don't know yet—but an intact swath of rainforest appears to provide free public health services.
