You know saving the rainforest is good for biodiversity. But it may also be a boon to human health. That's because the less clear cutting may mean less malaria, according to a paper out this weekend in the Journey merging infectious diseases.
Researchers look at stats for 2006 from 54 health districts in Western Brazil. The sites had more than 15,000 cases of malaria. The investigators compared those cases to deforestation in the same health districts over the previous ten years. They found a loss of just 4 percent of forest cover was associated with nearly 50 percent more malaria cases. And malaria risk was highest 5 to 10 years after the jungle was cleared.
Not all mosquitoes carry malaria. But the human loving species Anopheles darlingi does, and previous studies have shown that it thrives in the disturbed areas. In fact, you’re over 200 times more likely to find one of them biting you in a clearing than you are deep in the jungle where other more benign species compete with them for blood.
So how much clear-cutting is too much. We don't know yet. But the intact swath of rainforest appears to provide a few public health services.

主要问题还是对单词发音不熟,像rainforest,health,malaria要是听懂,文章就很好理解了。

Stat= STATISTIC: usually used in plural
Anopheles darlingi: 【医】[]氏按蚊
Swath: The width of a scythe stroke or a mowing-machine blade

You know, sometimes we don’t face that 800-pound gorilla in the room because we don’t notice them (HIM) in the first place. Literally, this is what researcher Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons proved in an experiment done ten years ago. In a video, two groupsone group with white T-shirts, the others black move randomly in a room while passing a basketball. And the viewer’s task is to count how many passes the white-shirted members make. But halfway through the video, a woman dresses in a gorilla suit, walks through the groups, stops, faces the camera, thumps her chest and walks off. Half of all viewers miss this. I did, and left me completely unnerved.

Chabris and Simons have now written a book, “the invisible gorilla and other ways are intuitions deceive us” about all kinds of illusions we suffer from. We think we see things as they really are, but “our vivid visual experience belies the striking mental blindness” they write. They cover illusions of memory, how often our memories are born from our own embellished stories. The illusion of knowledge we think we know much more than we actually do, the illusion of causewe quickly assume correlation means causation.

And such overestimations have profound consequences: eyewitness sending innocents to prison, believing wrong that vaccines cause autism simply because of the correlation, thinking that we can text while driving. And if there is one thing we ought to take from watching the gorilla film, it should be that texting while driving is a ticking time-bomb. But perhaps the worst illusion of all, the failing that leads to others, is the illusion of confidence. We humans profoundly overestimate our ability to see things as they are. As the physicist Richard Feynman famously said, the first principle is that you must not full yourself, and you are the easiest person to full.

You know, sometimes we don’t face that 800-pound gorilla in the room because we don’t notice him in the first place, literally. This is what researchers Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons proved in an experiment done 10 years ago.

In a video two groups, one group with white tee shirts, the other black, move randomly in a room while passing a basketball. The viewer’s task is to count how many passes the white-shirted members make. Halfway through the video, a woman dressed in a gorilla suit walks through the groups, stops, faces the camera, thumps(捶打) her chest and walks off. Half of all viewers miss this. I did, and it left me unnerved.

Chabris and Simons have now written a book, "The Invisible Gorilla and Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us" about all kinds of illusions we suffer from. We think we see things as they really are, but “our vivid visual experience belies a striking mental blindness,” they write.

They cover the illusion of memory, how often our memories are born from our own embellished(装饰的) stories; the illusion of knowledge, we think we know much more than we actually do; the illusion of cause, we quickly assume correlation means causation.

Such overestimations have profound consequences: eyewitnesses sending innocents to prison; believing—wrongly—that vaccines cause autism(孤独症) simply because of a correlation; or thinking we can text while driving. If there’s one thing we ought to take from watching the gorilla film it is that texting while driving is a ticking(滴答,使运作) time bomb.

Perhaps the worst illusion of all, the failing that leads to others, is the illusion of confidence. We profoundly overestimate our ability to see things as they are. As the physicist Richard Feynman famously said: The first principle is you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.

6.21日 今天的基本上没听懂啥意思。。核心单词whale没听出来,悲剧了。。。
不过要坚持~~!

The NOAA[National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(美国)国家海洋和大气局] ship Pisces(双鱼座) discovered a dead sperm whale(抹香鲸) on June 15—a possible victim of the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

There are at least 1600 such sperm whales in the Gulf, according to marine biologist Thomas Shirley of Texas A&M University. Minus one.

The irony is that sperm whales can thank oil for their species survival. Kerosene(煤油) refined from such petroleum helped displace the whale oil that lit(light过去式) lamps() in the 19th century and led to the near extinction of many whale species.

(Saving the whales has proven a benefit to the marine environment, including helping storage of the greenhouse gases produced by burning oil that are changing the global climate. Sperm whale poop(粪便) helps fertilize algae(海藻), which in turn suck up carbon dioxide via photosynthesis. )
这段的内容没有出现

Samples from the dead whale will ultimately tell what killed this denizen(居民) of the deep. Those won't be handed off for testing until July 2 when the Pisces returns to port. And the tests take weeks.

Regardless, it is known that such sperm whales feed on deep water squid that may be impacted by plumes of dispersed oil. The endangered whales have also been spotted surfacing into the slick. How the millions of liters of oil will impact sperm whales and other cetaceans(鲸类) is an ongoing, unintentional(无心的) science experiment.
