TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."

I fundamentally disagree with the statement that all nations should support to build a global university designed to engage students for the purpose of solving the world's most persistent social problems. Although the original intention of the speaker is appreciated, however the goal is too hard to attain because of the complex sources of the social problems, the cultural difference between the students and the social role of university.

To begin with, it is beyond the capacity of a university to connect all nations and solve the persistent social problems which are caused by complex reasons such as national interests, races, beliefs and so forth. When considering a persistent social problem, it usually combines more than one factors mentioned above and has a long history. For example, wars, race conflicts, poverty and terrorism are the key words of Middle East regional area. It is hard to ask two hostile governments to support a university to solve their problems which are deemed by them only can be solved by guns and bullets. Another issue is an environmental problem -- global warming, which is brought about with the pace of modernization. When the US government refuses to sign in The Kyoto Protocol, it declares that the efforts of all nations have been challenged. Even if the global university puts forward some solutions for the persistent problems, it is a long way from execution.

Admittedly, building a global university could to some extent to improve the communication of the students from different countries, however there are still many problems for the university itself, and such problems could hinder solving the persistent social issues. In the first hand, students from all nations have their own languages, customs, life styles and other respects which compose one thing -- culture. It will be big question that what language should be accepted as the official language for the university? Language is an important symbol of one culture, and it is hard to unify. On the other hand, the main responsibility of students is learning knowledge, and doing some researches because they have limited ability and social experience. They may bring us some sound solutions, yet needed test and verify. Last but not least, people always say, a university is a small society. How could we know the conflicts and discrepancies which have the common sources will not happen in the global university?

In addition, a global university is inevitably influenced by some power nations, who may impact on the independent voice of the global university. One situation is that a global university needs the financial support from all nations. Students analyze the persistent social problems and try to find out the sources, progresses, influences and corresponding solutions. And these research results may be proclaimed through some forms such as reports or conferences which could evoke the thoughts and discusses of the society and influence the governments when they make a decision. Therefore, when the global university is forced by some power countries because they have money without which the global university no longer maintains its operation, the global university has no good for addressing the persistent social problems and become a tool of these power countries. On the contrary, other undeveloped countries who have more hard problems that need attentions and researches yet can not afford it and get less benefits from the global university. From this point of view, it is an idealized rather than realistic proposal to build a global university by the support of all nations.

Persistent social problems only can be solved through the negotiation and communication between the governments. There are many obstacles to build a global university, and even if it is founded, the functions and original purposes of which are hard to maintain.

Although the original intention of the speaker is appreciated, however the goal is too hard to attain because of the complex sources of the social problems, the cultural difference between the students and the social role of university.
