Argument106 The following editorial appeared in a newspaper in the country of Solaria.
'The Eliot Valley region was primarily agricultural twenty years ago. In the past twenty years, however, many computer-chip manufacturers have opened factories there. A recent study found that water pollution in the region was worse than in any other region in the country. Moreover, the computer-chip factories, which use large quantities of water to manufacture the chips, are probably responsible for the low levels of water in the region's lakes and reservoirs. Therefore, if the region's computer-chip makers had limits placed on the amount of water they could use, water quality would improve.'
The author can not agreed by me, because the water pollution may be not exacerbated by the manufacturers, whose waste of water can not be proved much, and the project proposed by him is mostly a invalid one.
First and foremost, exacerbation of the water pollution may not be caused by the computer-chip(CC) manufacturers. According to the newspaper, The Eliot Valley region become country of Solaria after twenty years' development. And side effect of the developing is pollution, one kind of which is water pollution. The water pollution can be caused by many factors that can develop the region such as restaurants, which make a lot of smelly water after providing people dinner. Author naively gives two phenomena which are pollution and springing of company the casual relation. It is more possible that it is the coincidence. Besides, because the pollution is the recent state, which is mostly caused by the sudden change of the environment, not rather the increasing of manufacturers. If it is caused by the manufacturers, why especially happened recently? The number of manufactures reach a level will cause the disaster is not pervasive. Perhaps some new opened companies cause this disaster, then the limitation on whole is not rational.
Moreover, there is no scientific proof to illustrate that CC manufacturers will cost a lot of water, and no evidence such as percentage to illuminate that the quantities cost by the manufacturers are large enough to let the whole water level down. We all need a strong explanation here: why applying some algorithms in the machine to cut something need water? What we need is computer and machine, water may just provide the workers to drink. But workers are few.
We all know even a little down can be cost by a lot of waste, so even if the manufacturers consume water, will its quantity large enough to let the level down? Besides, climate may counts because water can be given by the rain the snow and the frost and taken by drought, which can interlocking influence the water level.
Last but not the least, even if the CC manufacturers are responsible for the water quality and quantities, limiting the amount can only improve the quantities, but not qualities. Using little does not equal to wasting little. As long as the manufacturers exist, the pollution and the problem about quantities should discussed separately. Besides, this issue is a complex thing, the limitation may cause other bad effect that may be more disastrous, such as depression that make nowadays people unable to live.
To find the real reason of water pollution and waste, a lot of thought and work have to be done, and then something should be carefully done. |
