TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

From this topic we could see that the speaker belittle the merit of famous people through the saying that too much emphasis has been study on them and most significant events and trends in history were made by a group unnamed people but not them. However, the reason why these people are famous but the others are not is waiting for the explanation. Then we could discuss the power of decision between the famous people and the others. And as a matter of fact, it is better to hold the opposite idea to the speaker's.
At first, we shall admit that some individuals we place emphasis on do have undoubtedly considerable impetus to the history. As we mention the American history, we thought of George Washington who is the first president of American. His role in gaining independence for the American colonies and later in unifying them under the new U.S. federal government cannot be overestimated. There would be no U.S.A. if there is no George Washington. This instance shows that individuals may be so decisive that can even rewrite the whole history.
Although individuals play all-important roles during the historical progress, we must accept that the study has place too many emphasis on them. That directly leads to the reducing attention paid to the other regions such as the historical background, the development of history, etc.
Compared with individuals, the obscure groups of people actually do have the impetus as well. They are the preparation and support to the events and trends. They provide the possibilities so that the events might happen. They are important, but that could not be the reason they become the one decides whether the events happened. What determine the events and trends in history can only be the famous few. Let us see President Washington's case again. Admittedly, there were a group of people whose name we couldn't speak out immediately, it was Washington that created the Continental Army, which fought and won the American Revolution, out of what was little more than an armed mob. It was also Washington who designed for victory brought final defeat to the British at Yorktown, Virginia, and forced Great Britain to grant independence to its overseas possession. He was a leader to determine the events.
To look for or reason by analogy, the group of unnamed people are just like an idea, and the famous people are speakers. The happening of the most significant events and trends in history is like an idea comes to mind, it needs someone to speak out, and the person who acts as a speaker comes out. He/she will be famous not only because he/she is the speaker, but also he speaks out what all people want to say and want to do. He/she is the most bereave and intelligent on among all of the people. To do or not to do, he/ makes the decision, and it is the decision made his difference and famous.
To sum up, it is true that the study of history laid too much emphasis on individuals. However, which we can never deny, the famous few play the decisive action in most significant events and trends, while the group of people whose identities have long been forgotten play as the impetus. |
