It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts.

I agree that students need to learn concepts and ideas when they begin their study, however, while those ideas and concepts will no doubt be needed for the beginning of students’ learning, the influence of ignoring facts on remembering and practicing will probably be the big barrier during the process of students’ learning.

The dearest and most immediate beneficiaries of understanding concepts and ideas are the students. When students begin to learn about some subject, the most direct way for them to get to know the content is through reading and understanding the ideas and concepts in their text books – which are usually placed in the beginning of the text books. Concepts and ideas made by the writer of the text book is the sketch of the content which will no doubt carry an profound advance in beginning students’ study. Students can get the skeleton of the knowledge and the basic aim of the subject by trying to understanding them, thereby, benefiting and improving their learning.

With the respect to the remembering, however, without learning the facts that relative to the concepts and ideas, students’ learning will meet a lot of barriers. It might seem that if students do not need to learn the changeable and sometimes relatively inaccurate facts, they can avoid many interferes outside. However, the way people remember and understand knowledge is to link it with the facts in the objects or the situations in their daily lives. The lack of facts which people need to link to the ideas and concepts stored in their brain will lead to misunderstanding. Since students often have to remember large amount of ideas and concepts, the end result is that students can hardly remember the meaning of the ideas and concepts, which trying to understand them seem to be a wasting of time.

The impact of practicing might turned out to be a barrier as well. Consider, for instance, the way students learn to put ideas and concepts into practical use. It would seem that without any guide from the relative facts, students can also manage to use the concepts into practice. However, it will cost a lot of time in trying and thinking, and we can spend the time in learning the facts and the correct way of practical using. This point is aptly demonstrated by the students trying to use some math equations to solve a question. She will find out the way to solve the problem much quicker if she has seen a similar sample solution, which is the relative fact. The example such as this one best explains the important we should learn facts.

In sum, the study advances result from understanding concepts and ideas can only serve to the beginning part of the study. However, although these no doubt will benefit students’ learning, I claim that without the understanding of facts, the understanding of the ideas and concepts can not be accomplished and the memory of them won’t last long.

我真心感觉自己举得例子很不恰当……但是来不及改了
The expression “Never, never give up” means to keep trying and never stop working for your goals. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

I agree that people who consistently working for their goals are great ones. However, while people will no doubt benefit from their spirit of persistence, the wrong direction of the future and an incorrect judgment to the future circumstance will probably be a risk one detrimental in some respects to people’s life.

People are dearly benefited from the spirit of “Never give up”. When people first begin chasing their goals, they are certainly filled with confidence. But later in their way to their final goals, they might meet lots of difficulties and hear lots of advices form others, which are, after all, the barriers to prevent them from their goals. Emerging confidence came from the thought of never give up will no doubt carry an especially profound positive influence on education. The thought of “Never give up” which comes up from people’s mind gives people a promise that they will finally get their goal if they persistent their way of chasing. Thereby, offers people continual mental support and great motivation in chasing their goals.

With the respect to the direction of the future, however, the expression “Never give up” never mentioned this. It might seem that if people never stop trying and working for their goals, their dreams will certainly come true. However, there are countless directions of life and some of them could be fatal for both people’s life and careers. Consider an extreme instance of Frankenstein. The crazy doctor created this monster in order to chasing his goal of making a “human-being” which in the end destroyed him. Chasing a wrong direction with great passion will result detrimental consequences to people themselves which harmful to people’s life and career.

The impact of incorrect judgment to the circumstance might turn out to be a detrimental one as well. In other words, during the way of chasing goals, people should also keep judging if the circumstance fits for the goals or not. Consider for instance, the life of Steve Jobs. Since he lived like a Buddhist in his early time. It might seem that he will continue such life which seldom has any contact with modern society through out his lifetime. However, when he found the opportunity on the personal computer market, he started his company and half gave up this kind of life and devoted himself in the company. Continue the life as a Buddhist might result in the waste of a big chance to begin the career. So, people should better change their routines and goals when chasing them.

In sum, the thought of never stop working for one’s goal that result from the expression “Never give up” can only serve people at the premise that they have already had correct directions of their lives and a deep understanding of their situation. However, without this premise, the thought of never give up no doubt will have a risk of pushing people into a fatal destination, which harmful to people’s whole life.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Teacher should be paid according to how much their students learn.

I don’t agree that teacher’s salary should have any direct relation with their students’ learning. However, while this way will no doubt inspire teachers’ activity of teaching, problems will be occurred and students’ learning might be detriment in some respects.

The most controversial problem that this measure will bring about is the way to measure how much the students learn. Test is of course the oldest and most convenient way people measure how much students learn. It might seem that using test is the best way to measure students’ learning and to decide teachers’ payment. However, the ignorance of disunited test paper in different provinces can result in an unfair payment. Consider for instance, the different types of test papers of Collage Entrance Examination in China. Since the different in education resource, the number of students and the level of development, tests in well developed province and in provinces located at western part of China are much easier than it in developing provinces with lots of students. Since its disunity, test cannot be taken as a standard of teachers’ payment and we can hardly find out another way as the scale.

The dearest and most immediate victims of the influence of this measure are students. It might seem that their study will no doubt be improved by strict teachers who want to get more salary by students’ high scores. However, their eager to get money will result in teachers’ discarding of good but ineffective ways of teaching. Consider the situation of education in China. Because students’ scores in the Collage Entrance Examination are considered as a way of measuring teacher’s teaching skill. Most of teachers in China choose to let students remember as much as possible and only teach the knowledge that will be tested in the exam. Many ways taken by Confucius such as “Teach a people in a way which fits that person best” has been totally ignored by teachers nowadays. Besides, students who have been taught in this way suffer a lot. Their teachers will force them to study whatever will be tested in the examination which deprives their rights to choose what they want to study and their time of all kinds of activities. Thereby, we produce many unhappy students, taking the exam for their teacher payment.

In sum, the measure of deciding teachers’ salary according to how much their students learn, is unreasonable considering the controversial standard of measure and the bad influence to students’ learning.

It is more important to keep your old friends than it is to make new friends.

I agree that people should keep on making new friends in order to enrich their experiences and broaden their horizon. However, while new friends will no doubt benefit people, the old friends who know you the best and can help you get out of the troubles are the one you should never forget or discard.

The dearest and most immediate beneficial people get from their new friends is to adapt to new environment quickly. When people enter a new class without any acquaintance around, new friends can tell them who is the smartest in this class, who like to bring snakes to classroom, and so forth, they help people get in the new environment quickly. Making new friends can reduce the loneliness and nervous come from the new environment. You can talk and play games with your new friends just you do the same things with your old ones, thus forget about the loneliness of coming to a new place. Thereby, they delight your new life and help you get into the new environment quickly.

With respect to the people who know you the best, however, new friends know you far less than your old friends. It might seem that your new friend know all the resent things happened on you, and all your thought recently, accordingly, they know more about you. However, getting to know a people not only means to know several things which happened on them, but also need a long time stay with them. It is a long process without any shortcut. Your old friends experienced a lot of things and shared sorrow and happy time together, so that one of you can guess the others’ feeling even without being told before. On contrast, because of the relatively short time being with you, your new friends usually cannot understand the whole of you, thus might often misunderstand your feeling. So, we shouldn’t discard our old friends who understand us the best.

The impact of help you get out of trouble might turn out to be another reason we should keep our old friends. Consider, for instance, when you feel upset, which one will you first turn for help? Since your new friends are right beside you, it might seem that people will first go to new friends’ place for comfort. However, for most of people, old friends who probably know how to comfort them turned out to be their first choice. Consider also, the situation you talk to your new friends about your trouble. On one hand, it would seem that they will help you just as your old friends will do. By the same token, however, as you only know them for a short time, are you sure your new friends can understand your feeling? Will your trouble has some conflict of interest with new friends while you don’t know? Suspicion such as these ones might have influence on your choice and make you choose your old friends at last.

In sum, happy time and less nervous feeling that brought by making new friends can only serve to people’s daily life. However, although people no doubt need to make new friends, they should keep in touch with their old friends.
