ISSUE 142
Claim: Colleges and universities shouldspecify all required courses and eliminate elective courses in order to provideclear guidance for students. Reason: College students—like people ingeneral—prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions.

From Where I am standing, I partly disagreewith the claim that colleges and universities should specify all requiredcourses and eliminate elective courses in order to provide clear guidance forstudent because college students prefer to follow directions rather than maketheir own decisions.

Colleges and universities education is totrain its students to perform better than ordinary people in their specificfields and in order achieve that, it is true that colleges and universitiesshould specify all required courses. However, it doesn’t mean that students aredeprived chances to learn other knowledge from elective courses. The system ofknowledge is a net, if any corner of the net is down, that whole net willbroke. Specific knowledge of students’ major could the one joining point of thenet, but it will not provide the whole system without other knowledge field. The founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, loved to play card with his friends inthe free time, but according to his autography, he took his card game as a veryimportant elective course – to train his logic by figure the turns of showinghis card and as a challenge for personal relationship. The former one gave himmany inspirations on software design, the latter one let him to make manyfriends which provided great help in his founding of Microsoft.

Though many students, like people ingeneral, prefer follow directions rather than make their own decision, it can’tjustify the act of eliminate elective course mandatorily by college anduniversities. It recalled the life experience of my grandfather, who wanted tobecome a painter in the first place, eventually become an engineer for over 20years. Back to 1950s, there’s no elective courses provided in China’suniversities which my grandfather went to. My grandfather developed greatinterest in painting in high school and wanted to become a painter, but hebarely received any painting train in engineering college. He told me that itwas a pity in his life that he missed the best chance to develop his skills inpainting.

In sum, elective courses should be providedin colleges and universities along with the required courses. They both contributethe students’ insight and opportunities in the future.
