Argument 50. An ancient, traditional remedy for insomnia—the scent of lavender flowers—has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored electronically. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. At the beginning of the second week, the volunteers discontinued their sleeping medication. During that week, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. Therefore, the study proves that lavender cures insomnia within a short period of time.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

我是考前五周的时候参加了王老师的作文小组，但只写了四篇全文，大纲倒是写了几十篇。

通过王老师的批改和点评，我有很多收获，除了理想的分数。

收获如下：

1. 学会了用王老师推荐的这个语料库http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/
以后我写英语文章的时候，可得多用此库查一下英语的搭配，可再也不能想当然地乱写一气了。
我乱写一气并非没有按照王老师的指点多看官方范文和他的范文，只是“画虎不成反类犬”，模仿不到家，反而难看了。

2. 向王老师学会了“1+3”的作文模型，即分类讨论的方法。这是GRE作文考查的关键所在，也是中国大陆考生的最大思维难点之一。中国大陆的家长教育孩子喜欢用“你只要......就可以......”的句式，搞得孩子思维僵化。而GRE作文则恰恰反其道而行，让考生发散思维，阐述“在情况一中是怎样，在情况二中又是怎样”。后来我又思考了一下，GRE作文的要求也可理解为把抽象问题具体化，这种能力要在平时多锻炼，就像积累语言表达一样。中国大陆应试教育下的语文写作，让学生喜欢在自己的作文中添加许多名言警句，而不多做解释。GRE作文则要求考生将例子和自己观点的联系解释得清清楚楚。

3. 通过王老师的指导，我明白了写作时一定要避免老GRE作文的表达，尤其是写Argument作文的时候，得按写作指导办事，不能仅仅找出题目所给短文的逻辑漏洞便了。

因此学生我无论都要感谢王老师的悉心指导。谢谢老师！

正如我取的标题“无量时间无量钱 可怜换得三点五”，我一个暑假、上个学期和一个寒假几乎都耗在GRE考试的准备上了，花的时间太多，耽误了我的专业课学习和写毕业论文；考了五次，由于本地无考点，还得到leeds和manchester，买复习资料费、考费加上食行住一共花了上千英镑，折合上万人民币，花的钱太多。最后这个分数只能让我对ETS埋下血海深恨。

经验不多，教训不少，如下所述：

1.一定要早考为妙，免得像我这样到了申请截止日期还在苦逼地准备考试，否则就太悲剧了。

2.为了防止被误导，把讲解如何写老GRE作文的资料全部扔掉，我就是被其狠狠地误导了一把我会乱说吗？

3.真的要找合适的人为自己批改作文，写作才能有进步。我从去年暑假到11月都是闭门造车地练习作文，直到12月份才加入本小组受到王老师的指导，可惜积重难返。

再次感谢王老师的帮助，也谢谢他的这个小组，祝王老师的研究取得丰硕的成果。由于考试次数所限，我是直到毕业都不能再考GRE了，唯有祝愿其他G友们踏着我的尸骨奋勇向前，干死ETS!
