In formal education, a curriculum is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university. Although the definition is hardly new, its structure and methods are continuously changing. Recently, some believe students should have a common knowledge foundation, often in the form of a core curriculum; on the other hand, others want students to be able to pursue their own educational interests, often through early specialty in a major, however, other times through the free choice of courses. In my opinion, the propensity toward any of these two forces is so irrational that inhibit the strength of them.
On one hand, a core curriculum is indispensable to fulfill the fundamental obligation of every educational institutions as to impart knowledge and living abilities. In the first place, the basic courses, such as mathematical, native language, physics and so forth, are the prerequisite skills and knowledge for future study and work. In the second place, the fundamental knowledge of various disciplines is indispensable to be a wholesome person. Through learning science, we obtain logic, critical thinking and common sense; through learning art we strengthen the cognition of natural; through learning philosophy, we better understanding of the world; through learning psychology we grow mentally healthy; and sociology convene the essence of society and human being. Therefore, a core curriculum is the most rudimental courses that every schools and government should make mandatory to all students.
Also, the same national curriculum owns irreplaceable position in transmitting identical value and standard all over the nation and in allievating some emergencies. At first, every country possesses certain national culture and value that denies any violation and insurrection. In this sense, the peerless function of national curriculum on avoiding mistakes and assuring a peaceful atmosphere is undoubted. Moreover, the same national curriculum is imperative in approaching some emergencies. For example, once realizing the dwindling away of Gaelic, the Irish government strongly promoted Gaelic as the country's second language and instruction in it is required in all schools. And since the unparallel importance of a healthy and rational national curriculum, only the government has enough power and resource to guarantee its performance.
On the other hand, we should also take the different educational interests and talent, economical and geological differences into account. All of us have realized the sharply different interests of every students, and also know well about the significance of personal interests, therefore we should also make the interests kindle the sparkle of enthusiasm and impetus beneath every mind at every possibility. Chen jinrun, who is one of the most accomplished and notable mathematician in recent China, only got a stunning 0 in Chinese of National Entrance College Examination; however, no one can deny his talent and indigenousness on learning math which can be aptly demonstrated by the full mark of math in the same examination. And thus if we simply instruct students on blindly observing the rigid national curriculum, we might put another numerous Chen jinrun into wretched existence.
Furthermore, minor differences in curriculum are also advisable since the different culture and economical condition. China, boasting its cultural diversity, is composed of 56 nations, and the country give enough freedom to those multifarious tribes to practice their own distinct curriculum as long as they accept the core syllabus imposed by the national government. For instance, all the minorities plays considerable role in conserving the linguistic diversity of China by instructing their indigenous language in classroom. Also, the economical condition is another factor that never should be underestimated. After all we can not push the identical computer class in Tibet and Xinjiang as in Beijing and Shanghai, since their extraordinary contract in available educational equipment.
Actually, a nation should provide some national curricula, while different areas could provide some course on account of the reality or as supplement. This is the way that we can preserve the uniformity and completeness of the national education, and at the same time, greatest maximize the superiority of personal interests and minimize the adverse effect of different culture and economical condition.
In a nutshell, only through striking a balance between national curriculum and moderate freedom on distinct course according to various contrast, can we truly educate our students and fulfill the obligation of education. |
