"If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
----------------

Having a goal and then making an effort to attain it seems to be a good feature that inherented in human nature. It is important to take actions when someone has a goal in the mind, or he/she would patheticly remain a mere dreamer. However, any means taken to reach the goal seems too extreme. One should take a deeper analysis on this assertion.

A hundred people may have a hundred goals which to them are worthy. However, the definition of worthy may various from different individuals. One goal may appear attractive to a person yet meaningless to another person. So it is subjective to state one certain goal is worthy. In that case, a simply decision on
whether a goal is worthy or not is not persuasive for people to make up their minds making breathtaking efforts to attain it. The goal form in one's mind should not only be beneficial to himself,
but also harmless to others.
Consider that if one man's utimate goal is to kill someone for an revenge, no matter how worthy he considered this goal seems to be it is not legal to opperate it. Therefore, being legal and not harmful to other people are
basic characteristics a goal should have.

On the most abstract level, the aspiration to achieve a goal constitutes the right force that has propelled human civilization toward in the course of human history. Stimulated by the thirst for pursuing the desire from within and challenged by the harshness in the process of achieving goals, man has evolved triumphantly from the most primitive to the most advanced and sophisticated. How can we achieve such spectacular development of science and technology if there are not any scientists who work day and night to attain the scientific goal? How can we enjoy so much breathtaking artistic masterpieces if there are not any artists who devote their life to their artistic career? Just because of the spirit of exploring and pursuing goals fearlessly human beings can achieve such huge progress.

However, we should realize that the effort outlined above doesn’t equal any means which the speaker asserts should be taken to attain goals. Making an effort depends on the basis that the means you take are justifiable and good for human beings. For example, aiming at development in industrialization is a decent goal; however, when it results in environmental destroying we should take a second consideration on that. Preservation of peace has no ground for blame; however, attacking other country with the excuse to maintain peace is awful and blamed.

In sum, it is crucial for one to have a goal as well as the spirit of attaining the goals. However, what he should is making a huge effort to fight for his dream other than take any means being regardless of justice and whether proper for the whole human’s warfare.

argument233
---------------
The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a company that builds shopping malls throughout the country.
"The surface of a section of Route 101, paved two years ago by McAdam Road Builders, is now badly cracked and marred by dangerous potholes. In another part of the state, a section of Route 66, paved by Appian Roadways more than four years ago, is still in good condition. Appian Roadways has recently purchased state-of-the-art paving machinery, and it has hired a new quality-control manager. Because of its superior work and commitment to quality, we should contract with Appian Roadways rather than McAdam Road Builders to construct the access roads for all our new shopping malls."
----------------

In this argument, the vice president of a company states that the access roads for all of their new upcoming shopping malls should be constructed by Appian Roadways rather than McAdam because of the quality of the Route 101 which paved by McAdam two years ago is worse than that of Route 66 which paved by Appian more than four years ago. In addition, the arguer believes that the import of the new advanced machinery and its new quality-control manager would be a guarantee for high quality of paving road. However, At first glance, the argument seems plausible, but a closer inspection reveals that it is based on faulty logic and it ultimately remains unconvincing.

The first problem with the argument is that the arguer assumes a direct cause and effect relationship between the quality of road and its paver’s skill. He fails to consider the difference of environment factors contributes a lot to the difference of road’s quality. Imagine that if the weather in Route 101 is much worse than that in Route 66 which leads the road exposing to the bad weather to be resulted in a short life extensity. Or the traffic flow of Route 101 is much heavier than that of Route 66, so Route 101 has been burdened with much more load. Therefore it suffered a poorer condition than Route 66. There is also a possibility that the original geological conditions of Route 101 are worse than that of Route 66. Based on the reasons outlined above the Route 101 can be a rare occasion which shall not reveal the real ability of McAdam.

Furthermore, the purchase of new machinery can not prove that Appian is definitely better than McAdam. For the reason that new machines always have a period of debugging, there is no evidence that it can be put into use right away. The same situation also applies to the new quality-control manager. Because of the unfamiliar with the new machine the new comer may be not experienced in operating the machine which may in turn cause some unexpected damage. The arguer needs further investigation to draw the conclusion that new machine and new operator serve as a sign of high quality of paving road.

What’s more, deducted from the argument we can see that the two companies are engaged in paving traffic road whereas the new construction is aim at paving business road. The specific use of road can make a big difference. Therefore the comparison between Route 101 and Route 66 has less reference value of constructing roads for business use.

In summary, this argument ignores several logical possibilities that severely undermine its premise. Without addressing other possible reasons for the poorer condition of Route 101, and the unconvinced positive result from bringing new machine and quality-control manager, the arguer is hasty to draw the conclusion which fails to convince the reader about its accuracy.
