TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

I agree with the speaker's statement that scandals can focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Although we have already been exposed in many reports and news on corruption problems of officials, the citizens of both Taiwan and South Korea are all shocked by the bribery cases of their former presidents, Chen Shui-bian and Roh Moo-hyun. These scandals can not only force us to reevaluate these famous people on the existed value system, but also reveal something that we have ignored before.

Consider the scandals in academia. One example is the academic fraud of Hwany Woo-Suk, the scientist of South Korea who lied to the world that he had already cloned the cell of embryo, but was found to make fictitious dates in his research and thesis. Another example is the academic plagiarism in China. Many Chinese academicians are involving in this scandal and investigated whether they plagiarized their papers. Although some speakers and reformers appeal us for building an academic system with honesty and credit, many of us wouldn’t believe that the academic problems are so severe. The two scandals force us to reflect on the moral and credit system of academia. The incomplete moral system and review system, the severe corruption problems in academia and the existed educational system which need improvements are all responsible for the polluted sincerity and credit of academia

However, we shouldn’t neglect one’s contributions because of his personal mistake. For example, Mosley, the president of FIA, was in a trouble of his sex scandal. Although he has honestly admitted to his mistake, thinking about his contributions to FIA, we can not deny his success and reject him because of his private mistake. And there are also many officials who had been involved in scandals but forgiven by people in the end.

In addition, there are also a lot of scandals the reliabilities of which cannot be judged. Thanks to the recent development of media and communication, our life is full of news and reports which are hard to distinguish true and false. And some of us even treat more and more scandals as fun. Some newspaper reporters are good at creating scandals to draw people’s attention in order to increase their sales. Some actors or singers in the realm of entertainment also make use of the fictitious scandals to increase their popularities among the mass. These scandals can not reveal the problems of society, but even misguide the attention and judgment of people.

To sum up, some scandals can be useful to focus our attention on problems of our society. But we must first distinguish the true ones and the fictitious ones. Moreover we should treat these scandals with a correct attitude and don't let them misguide our judgment.
