The role of the business school

My Sum-Up
How do business schools remain relevant in today’s changing world?
1.Business change what they wants from the MBA students.
2.Introduction to two deans: Santiago & Paul
1Has the role of the business school changed as a result of the economic crisis?
[Santiago] Changes occur in (diverse) courses and (practical ) research
1.Programmes in management are very much demanded and varied from several quarters.
2.But some things have changed when the business schools also prepared graduated for governments.
3.Demand for entrepreneurship courses have increased.
4.Business schools develop research which can actually address the real problems of business.
2Have you seen a change in what professors are researching over the last two years?
[Paul] No
1.Reserch grinds slowly and most of the business courses have not changed.
2.We need changes for leader to understand the complexity of the world and notice risk factors.
[Santiago] Yes
Managers should come back to school.
[Paul] We need changes in mindset
1.We need the right kind probing mindset.
2.Courses are offered for skeptical mindset of truly questioning the foundation of theories.

3. It is not true that some people say "everything has changed."
4.Practive hypnotize people into using old models and thinking to solve new problems.
5.Wrong mental attitude about models and methods result in the crisis.
3Does that imply that schools have historically failed to inculcate that attitude in their students?
[Santiago] No, it is not the fault of business schools.
1.The crisis was not caused by education of business school but resulted from the interplay between banks and regulators.
2.We need to recover the golden rules of what is good management.
4Can business schools exert any leverage over regulators?
[Paul] Yes
Research groups at Tuck begin trying to affect regulators. But whether it works remains a question.
[Santiago] Yes
Business schools need to develop financial theory and they also can train regulators.
[Paul] Examples for Santiago’s suggestion
Regulators need training for the basic skills of management.
5Is the nature of leadership changing?
[Paul] Yes
Self-awareness is more important not.
[Santiago] Yes
We place more emphasis on teamwork but charismatic leadership.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sentence and Phrases
Useful Expressions
Business schools sense a chance to drive the agenda.
Sense a chance=find a chance
the regulators are supposed to keep things safe and keep people from doing unsafe things and they didn't do it.
Be supposed to=should
Can business schools exert any leverage over regulators?
Exert leverage over=pose effects on
I think that in every aspect of society some amount of management education is necessary in order for those institutions to deliver the services that they intend to deliver at a reasonable cost.
In (condition/every aspect of sth), something is necessary in order for somebody to do something.
Materials
What Managers should do in crisis
In times of crisis managers need to reinvent their existing businesses, launch new products and diversify.
It's not the person that charges ahead and rallies the troops. It's more of a person that is sensitive to the situation and to themselves.
An Analogy to Similarity of History
History is very recurrent and we are attending again a move of the pendulum.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Comment
Well, reading dialog is a new experience and it is a little harder to get what they mean because of easily changed issue.
Around all the issue they talk about, I am interested in the debates about “Can business schools exert any leverage over regulators?”

Paul and Santiago come into agreement that business schools are becoming more and more important to government. Not only the voice of research teams in schools could pose effects, though there are lobbyist disturbing scholars’ opinions, but also courses for management could help a lot when officials learn better skills in basic finance. That is, an official without good skills such as how to budget, or reading statistics, may fail to make optimal or even reasonable decisions themselves.

I believe that governments should offer in-service training for their officials. It is very possible that politicians without real management, especially those for only rhetoric winning their position and job , could ruin a society. Perhaps they are not sensitive to the situation and problem they meet. But they hold power of decision. Thus such politicians may easily adopt others’ suggestion when they have no ideas, possibly for only “it sounds good”, without critical thinking.

[REBORN FROM THE ASHES][comment][01.06]
https://bbs.gter.net/thread-1049212-1-1.html

My Sum-Up
1.Astronomers use a sound method to find Vulcan, though the hypothetical planet hasn’t be found.
2.Introduction to Kepler, a telescope, as a tool of the sound method in finding a planet.
3.Kepler succeed in the discovery of Earth-sized planet and supply a gap of methodology in planet-hunting.
4.But the planets Kepler found so far are significantly larger than Earth and even using the transit method cannot confirm the if there are orbits.
5.Such strange phenomenon indicates that these planets are different from earth and they might just be youngsters.
6.Although all discoveries till now disappoint people and some want to quit their search, the plant-hunting will go on in earnest for the belief that Earth-sized planets would be found if they exist.
--------------------------------------------------------
Sentences and phrases
Useful Expressions
They were searching for Vulcan, a putative planet inside the orbit of Mercury, by looking for its transits. These are the moments when, viewed from Earth, the hypothetical planet would cross the solar disc.
Putative=hypothetical
The hunt, however, is on in earnest.
In earnest=sincerely
There is the hope that, one day, a life-bearing planet will turn up.
Earth (= A life-bearing planet
Turn up=come forth=emerge=appear
Materials
Argument-Lack of Evidence or Counterexamples
None of these discoveries favours the underlying reason why planet-hunting is such a popular sport—the hope that, one day, a life-bearing planet will turn up.
None of (evidence/counterexamples) favors the underlying (reason) why (conclusion).
--------------------------------------------------------
My Comment
This is a scientific article. It shows the progress of planet-hunting and the volition of continual search. Although discoveries till now disappoint astronomers, the plant-hunting will go on in earnest for the belief that Earth-sized planets would be found if they exist.

Assumption serves as the amazing grace of science, but it also works as the tragedy of inquiring. Imagination gives us a chance of thinking a life-bearing planet as earth outside, but in logic we falls into a dilemma that we cannot falsify it forever. In other words, we cannot simply conclude that there is no earth-like planet when we fail to find it, or until we hunt every corner of the universe where we make another assumption that the cosmos is infinite.

However, if we prove our assumption, or in this article that the astronomers come across another beautiful planet, could we find anything more exciting and wonderful than that?

That is, in pursuit of rationality is basic on sensibility. The hope for our assumption is the underlying assumption which gives us power to do everything.

Far from the topic above, I would like to say it is the curiosity and imagination which urge scientists to devote themselves to research. I still feel lucky that I have kept my heart as a child so that I am not easily used to commonplace. In my belief, interesting view with this world may make an interesting life.

海王泪() 22:29:20
EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

C() 22:29:51
Q() 22:30:12
海王泪() 22:30:13
C() 22:30:43
Q() 22:31:05
海王泪() 22:31:20
海王泪() 22:31:42
Q() 22:31:51
Q() 22:32:01
一直用EZ
海王泪() 22:32:03
海王泪() 22:32:06
海王泪() 22:32:40
Q() 22:34:35
海王泪() 22:35:37
海王泪() 22:35:57
Mica<> 22:37:08
https://bbs.gter.net/viewthread.php?tid=959356&highlight=
海王泪() 22:37:08
Q() 22:38:52
mika~
Q() 22:40:26
海王泪() 22:41:00
海王泪() 22:41:19
Q() 22:41:20
C() 22:41:59
C() 22:42:13
有感
Q() 22:42:32
C() 22:43:21
海王泪() 22:44:20
海王泪() 22:44:52
C() 22:44:54
C() 22:44:59

C() 22:45:04
C() 22:45:11
海王泪() 22:45:22
海王泪() 22:45:34

My Comment
Some people say “Marriage is the grave of Love”; however, some argue that ”Without Marriage Love would die without burial.”
I agree with the latter though martial ambivalence rules world of art now. Not only literature but also many soup operas film and broadcast are keen for this topic.
Whatever works! More I consider is that I won’t earn my bride under 30 years old. Having a marriage would limit the career of a man (or a boy). And probably thus, make a family…. Whatever works…
The analysis of two books flows in this critique. But sorry I have limited time in reading so that I could hardly get all ideas in our first book review. I’m gonna go now.

Political Crime

1.
Politics have become discredited by the employment of culpable expedients and the adoption of immoral maxims; for their reputation to be retrieved they must be brought into accord with morality.[z1] After having resorted for so long to cunning and falsehood, to intrigue and violence, politics, were it only for the novelty of the thing, should try the effect of fair dealing, tolerance, and justice. Today, more than at any period, novelty is liked. And what greater novelty could there be than politics conducted on moral lines? It is possible that people will end by recognizing that in public as in private life honesty is the most effective and the most skilful policy. Not only should Machiavellism be loathed[z2] by honorable people, but it should be regarded as fatal to the true interests of nations. A great policy cannot be immoral. Craft and violence may score ephemeral successes, but they do not assure the greatness and prosperity of a country. The successes achieved by an immoral policy are not lasting; sooner or later nations, like individuals, politicians, just as private persons, are punished for the evil or rewarded for the good[z3] they do. Political crimes are punished more often than is supposed. Those who put their adversaries to death by poison or upon the scaffold often undergo a like fate; those who send others into exile are exiled in their turn.[z4]

2.
There is more immorality than profoundness in Machiavellism. It was not a shifty and violent policy that was pursued by Saint Louis, L'Hopital, Henry IV., Sully, Turgot, Franklin, or Washington. Their example shows that it is possible to be a great King, a great Minister, a great citizen, and at the same time an honest man. On the other hand, mighty geniuses have been the ruin of the peoples they have governed, because they despised justice and pursued a Machiavellian policy. Napoleon I., who was solely guided by reasons of State, lost his senses in the end and
embarked upon[z5] the war in Spain and the Russian campaign. Danton and Robespierre, who did not lack talent, brought the Republic to ruin through trying to save it by the Terror. Liberty is not to be imposed by the guillotine; fraternity is not established by the extermination of its adversaries; the reign of justice and equality is not founded by popular or judicial massacres.[z6]

[z2]Loath=hate

[z5]Embark upon=Begin=Wage

My Comment
I strongly recommend this article for the following reasons:
1.Materials for Issue Task such as Issue17 and 174
2.Analitical Proccess of critiques on a policy, which could be used similar in Argument Task

For the Materials, I got strongly shock when I first come across this beauty, and first am aware of political crime-- The mechanism of some unfair laws. It is unveiled insightfully in the fourth paragraph:

Individual American politicians have great latitude to propose new laws.
Stricter curbs on paedophiles win votes. And to sound severe, such curbs must be stronger than the laws in place, which in turn were proposed by politicians who wished to appear tough themselves. Few politicians dare to vote against such laws, because if they do, the attack ads practically write themselves.

That is what the author called political cowardice” in the last paragraph. It remind me of the excellent essays delivered by Hugesea several days before. What I believe is such legislation failure becomes a deep-seated headache for Uncle Sam. Even though we admire how effective and efficient American Dmocracy in law, it still remains a severe problem in law’s mechanism and seems insoluble.

【America's Unjust Sex Law】
https://bbs.gter.net/viewthread.php?tid=1050520

I strongly recommend this article for the following reasons:
1.Materials for Issue Task such as Issue17 and 174
2.Analitical Proccess of critiques on a policy, which could be used similar in Argument Task

Argument

How dangerous are the people on the registries? A state review of one sample in Georgia found that two-thirds of them posed little risk. For example, Janet Allison was found guilty of being “party to the crime of child molestation” because she let her 15-year-old daughter have sex with a boyfriend. The young couple later married. But Ms Allison will spend the rest of her life publicly branded as a sex offender.

First, it is unfair to impose harsh penalties for small offences. Perhaps a third of American teenagers have sex before they are legally allowed to, and a staggering number have shared revealing photographs with each other. This is unwise, but hardly a reason for the law to ruin their lives.

Second, America’s sex laws often punish not only the offender, but also his family. If a man who once slept with his 15-year-old girlfriend is barred for ever from taking his own children to a playground, those children suffer.

Third, harsh laws often do little to protect the innocent. The police complain that having so many petty sex offenders on registriesmakes it hard to keep track of the truly dangerous ones. Cash that might be spent on treating sex offenders—which sometimes works—is spent on huge indiscriminate registries. Public registers drive serious offenders underground, which makes them harder to track and more likely to reoffend. And registers give parents a false sense of security: most sex offenders are never even reported, let alone convicted.

(理由1)Truly Dangerous有了掩护,因为小打小闹的信息过多;
(理由2)Cash,警察经费的机会成本;
(理由3)A false sense of security,家长有安全错觉,真正的罪犯不在法律监管之下(P.S.

3 A false sense of security是不是有点似曾相识?
After all, a false confidence in ineffective gear could be just as dangerous as no gear at all.”

1) It would not be hard to redesign America’s sex laws.
2) Instead of lumping all sex offenders together on the same list for life, states should assess each person individually and include only real threats.
3) Instead of posting everything on the internet, names could be held by the police, who would share them only with those, such as a school, who need to know.
4) Laws that bar sex offenders from living in so many places should be repealed, because there is no evidence that they protect anyone: a predator can always travel.
5) The money that a repeal saves could help pay for monitoring compulsive molesters more intrusively—through ankle bracelets and the like.

Instead of….. states should assess…..
Instead of….. names could be held….
第四句:Bar should be….呼应第二意群,撤销恶劣后果;另外,because there is no evidence that….
第五局:Saves could help…

Issue部分

17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

Political Crime
Politics have become discredited by the employment of culpable expedients and the adoption of immoral maxims; for their reputation to be retrieved they must be brought into accord with morality.

There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
What are unjust laws? Where are they from?
Martin Luther King, Jr.: An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
St. AugustineAn unjust law is no law at all.

Unfair Law
However practical and just the case for reform, it must overcome political cowardice, the tabloid media and parents’ understandable fears.”

America’s sex laws often punish not only the offender, but also his family. If a man who once slept with his 15-year-old girlfriend is barred for ever from taking his own children to a playground, those children suffer.
Perhaps a third of American teenagers have sex before they are legally allowed to, and a staggering number have shared revealing photographs with each other. This is unwise, but hardly a reason for the law to ruin their lives.
Sex Offender
For example, Janet Allison was found guilty of being “party to the crime of child molestation” because she let her 15-year-old daughter have sex with a boyfriend. The young couple later married. But Ms Allison will spend the rest of her life publicly branded as a sex offender.
Unjust and ineffective(另一篇相关报道)

http://www.ecocn.org/bbs/redirect.php?tid=22226&goto=lastpost]
174"Laws should not be rigid or fixed. Instead, they should be flexible enough to take account of various circumstances, times, and places."

It would not be hard to redesign America’s sex laws. Instead of lumping all sex offenders together on the same list for life, states should assess each person individually and include only real threats. Instead of posting everything on the internet, names could be held by the police, who would share them only with those, such as a school, who need to know.
