TOPIC: ARGUMENT10 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a Batavia newspaper.

"The department of agriculture in Batavia reports that the number of dairy farms throughout the country is now 25 percent greater than it was 10 years ago. During this same time period, however, the price of milk at the local Excello Food Market has increased from $1.50 to over $3.00 per gallon. To prevent farmers from continuing to receive excessive profits on an apparently increased supply of milk, the Batavia government should begin to regulate retail milk prices. Such regulation is necessary to ensure both lower prices and an adequate supply of milk for consumers."


    This argument concludes that Batavia government should regualte retail milk prices to ensure both lower prices and an adequates supply of milk for consumers.The argument cited the number of dairy farms' increasement and the raising price of milk at local Excello Food Market .The argument also points out that regulation is necessary to ensure both lower prices and an adaequate supply of milk for consumers.The argument suffers from several flaws,which render it unconvincing.

    First , the number of dairy farms throughout the country increased,it did't mean that the number of dairy farms in Batavia also increased.   It is quite possible that  people in Batavia do not  llke drinking milk ,and the number of daily farms decreased.Even though, the number of dairy farms in Batavia has increased,it contributes nothing to the raising of milk prices. In the opposite, the price of milk might have reduced owning to the competition.In order to indicate that the number of dairy farms has someting to do with the milk prices,the editor must provide some evidence or reasons.

    Secondly,the argument fails to account for the possibility that the price of milk at other market in Batavia is much lower than that in Excello Food Market.The increasement of price at Excello Food Market  can not present the whole trend.If other markets have more purchase channels,their price might be lower,or there're no other markets near Excello Food Market,then the price may be higher than others. It is too hastily to regard the price at Excello as a standard without showing detailed evidence that price at Excello Food Market can present the whole price in Batavia.

    Finally,the argument fails to demonstrate that regulation is necessary to ensure an adaquate supply of milk.In fact, a myriad of other fators including building more dairy farms,buying milk from other state,encouraging raising more cows and so on,might just be likely to broaden the supply of milk.Without ruling out these and other possibilities, the editor can not justifiable conclude that only by carrying out the regulation can ensure the supply of milk for consumers.

    In conclusion, the argument is unconvincing at it stands.To strengthen the argument, the editor must show that the number of fairy farms in Batavia and the price of milk at other market in Batavia.Additionally , the argument have to demonstate no factors other than regulation that can ensure the supply of milk. Therefore, if the argument had inclulde the given fators discussed above ,it would have been more thorough and logicallly accceptable.
