"To combat the recently reporteddramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, theseinstitutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls forstudents to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a facultymember if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replacedan old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachersand an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honorcode has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figurehad dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Grovetonhonor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely tocheat with an honor code in place than without."
In this argument , the author recommend that institutions should adopt honor codes simlilar to Groventon's to combat cheating. To support this , the author points out twenty-one cases that students reported about cheating in the first year honor codes was in place which was lower than the average of thirty cheating cases reported ,and five years later the figure had dropped to fourteen. The author also cited a survey conducted by the Groveton honor coucil showing that a majority of students claimed that they would be less likely tocheat with an honor code in place than without. However , the argument suffers several flaws , whichrender it unconvincing.
To begin with, the number of cases thatstudents report about cheating can not reflect the cheating rate because author fails to show the premise that every students would report to a faculty member if they witness others' s cheating. If most students would not notify a faculty member when they witness cheating , then the number of cases that students report about cheating is much lower than the number of actually cheating. Ifthis is the case, that number of students report about cheating fails to be comparable with the average number of cheating.
Secondly, the author's assumption that the decreaseof the number of cases that students report about cheating was due to honorcode. The author fails to take into account other factors ,such as reform ofthe teaching, that could lead to thesame result. Without considering and ruling out these possibilities ,the authorcannot justifiably conclude that the results was due to honor code.
Finally, supporting honor code has goodeffect on reducing cheating in Groventon, it do not mean this would have thesame result on other institutions. It is entirely possible that qualities of education andother facilities differs a lot between Groventon and other institutions,Without taking these difference into account, the expected result isunguaranteed.
In sum , the argument is not so convincing as it stands. To bolster it, the writermust provide clear evidence to show that the number of report can reflect the cheat rate. Also, the author need to take into account other factors thatcould cause the reduction of cheating and difference between Groventon andother institutions. If the argument have included the given factors discussed about ,
it should be more thorough and logically acceptable.
