TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Faculty in colleges and universities are always facing a problem that whether or not they should work outside the academic world in professions related to their courses. This is a complex issue that involves many factors. The speaker’s assertion is reasonable to some extent because there are specific conditions that need to be considered before making decisions.

Generally speaking, it is necessary for faculty to work outside; after all, in order to improve their quality of instruction, they need to keep along with the development of the fields. There are three advantages about it. Firstly, faculty's knowledge needs to be updated by working outside. Equipped with their updated information, they can improve the quality of instruction as well as their research work. Secondly, students need to know the development of their majors in order to determine their later careers. Faculty working outside play a role as the bridge between the students and society, imparting them with the latest trends. Thirdly, faculty working outside may enforce the communication and corporation between the school and society, thus attract programs from companies and absorb donations from alumni. The money can be used to improve facilities for teaching and thus the quality of instruction.

However, it is an easy conception to understand, but it is difficult to translate into practice, because there are several problems requiring consideration.

The first one is teachers themselves. That is to say, we should think over whether a teacher is suitable for working outside. For one thing, it is teacher's character. For instance, some teachers are introversive when communicating with strangers. Only in their offices or classrooms can they be relaxed. If they are forced to work outside their college or university, they would be too shy to work well. For another, working out or not also depends on faculty's energy and time. Or, if they are too busy with teaching students or doing researches to have leisure time, it would be unrealistic to work outside. Those extroverted teachers with enough time, however, may as wellconsider working outside.

Another problem is about academic areas. Common sense informs us that some kinds of fields, such as electronics, computer science, and so on, are developing fast in society. If teachers are still staying in their laboratories, they would lag behind others. One of the efficient methods to maintain advanced is working outside. On the other hand, we should recognize that there are also some subjects that are not so popular out of school, like philosophy or theoretical physics. Their development relies on campus because they seldom have direct application. Their main function is providing theoretical supports for other related subjects. So faculty studying these fields need not work outside.

In addition, some potential negative impacts to the quality of instruction might be brought about by faculty's working outside, although in the same academic area. Firstly, too much emphasis placed on outside work would probably influence the academic atmosphere in colleges and universities. With their prestige and ability, faculty are usually welcome in their fields. Companies often offer satisfied environment and high salaries for them, which would possibly impact the morale of faculty as well as their quality of instruction. Secondly, working outside will definitely cost some of faculty's time and energy after teaching and researching. Weren’t they handled well, the quality of instruction will be affected.(请问这句倒装没有问题吧,没信心)

In conclusion, working outside within their academic field has many merits with faculty’s instruction, but other problems may follow it without comprehensive consideration. It is hard to make a universal suggestion. Teachers are supposed to think it over carefully referring to there own conditions.

Faculty in colleges and universities are always facing a problem that whether or not they should work outside the academic world in professions related to their courses(总感觉应该换个同义说法). This is a complex issue that involves many factors. The speaker’s assertion is reasonable to some extent because there are specific conditions that need to be considered before making decisions.(这里没怎么懂,我感觉不应该是because吧)

Generally speaking, it is necessary for faculty(faculties) to work outside;(我觉得应该是句号吧) after all, in order to improve their quality of instruction, they need to keep along with the development of the fields. There are three advantages about(of) it.

However, it is an easy conception to understand, but it is difficult to translate into practice, because there are several problems requiring consideration.(however和but是不是有点?
The first one is teachers themselves. That is to say, we should think over whether a teacher is suitable for working outside. For one thing, it is teacher's character(具体的是什么character最好用从句点出来). For instance, some teachers are introversive when communicating with strangers. Only in their offices or classrooms can they be relaxed. If they are forced to work outside their college or university, they would be too shy to work well.(我感觉这个论证不是很好,毕竟这不代表普遍现象,没有说服力,可能这样的老师很多人认为他们都不够格做老师) For another, working out or not also depends on faculty's energy and time. Or, if they are too busy with teaching students(their teaching应该就行了吧) or doing researches to have leisure time, it would be unrealistic to work outside. Those(those指代不清,those factors吧) extroverted teachers with enough time, however, may as well consider working outside.

Another problem is about academic areas. Common sense informs us that some kinds of fields, (不需要标点吧)such as electronics, computer science, and so on, are developing fast in society.

In addition, some potential negative impacts to the quality of instruction might be brought about by faculty's working outside, (应是句号)although in the same academic area. Firstly, too much emphasis placed on outside work would probably influence the academic atmosphere in(at) colleges and universities. With their prestige and ability, faculty are usually welcome(welcomed) in their fields. Companies often offer satisfied environment and high salaries for them, which would possibly impact the morale of faculty as well as their quality of instruction. Secondly, working outside will definitely cost some of faculty's time and energy after teaching and researching. (这个上面不是已经写过了吗,重复了吧)Weren’t they handled well, the quality of instruction will be affected.(请问这句倒装没有问题吧,没信心)(这个好像没什么问题)

In conclusion, working outside within their academic field has many merits with faculty’s instruction, but other problems may follow it without comprehensive consideration. It is hard to make a universal suggestion. Teachers are supposed to think it over carefully referring to there own conditions.

Issue50
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

(-)energy limit&time limit
As we step into the 21st century, the pace of the technology advancement and academic progress is so quick that knowledge contained in recently published textbooks often drop behind. The speaker stresses that faculties at the college and university should work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach. As for me, I strongly agree with this viewpoint.
In one sense accompanied with the appearance of Internet, the information transfers rapidly than any other times in human being’s history. High-tech products make the teaching more convenient and drive the laboratory equipments update at an unimaginable speed. However, at the same time, this trend brings the college teachers some troubles especially those whose classes refer to the advanced knowledge. There exists a main problem on campus that the textbooks that students purchase are often published one or more years ago which contribute to the tremendous change of the contents. As we all know, the responsibility of teachers in university is to help the students grasp the professional skills and guide them to hunt for a satisfied job in the future. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary for the teachers in university to work outside and keep a close contact with popular technology in common life. Only by this way, can the teachers deliver the most reliable information towards those students and let them realize the real world out of campus.
In another sense the final purpose for students to attend college is to put what they learn in classes to practice and to achieve success in some field. As a consequence, it is obviously that combining the theory and practice is so vital. The heated debated about the difference between the examination-oriented system in China and the education for all-around development attracts much public attention. Dating back to the early 20th century, John Dewey has emphasized practical ideas in both his philosophical and educational theories. He is involved in how abstract concepts could apply to everyday life. His thoughts which advocate “hands-on” learning prompted a dramatic change in United States education. On the contrary, Chinese students and teachers at that time were still addicted in the Confucius books. Due to these opposite teaching ways, the USA created many high-tech equipments such as rocket and satellite much earlier than China.
No doubt that it is beneficial for college teaching to admire college faculties to work outside in their own professional fields. Yet it will also cause some negative effects. For instance, the time and energy of the teachers are so limited that they may not guarantee that the quality of their professional classes. This situation may probably lead the teachers to a low efficiency and the students to be tired of their campus classes.
In summarize, regardless of the passive influences teachers in university should attempt to work outside the schoolyard relevant to their teaching course so as to meet the students’ career needs.

Generally, the way people look, dress, and act reveal their attitudes and interesting. Sometimes, the appearance and actions are affected by outer factors, from which we can know some ideas and values of society. However, when considering some deepest inner thoughts of people, the appearance and action may do not work.

First of all, the way people look and dress reveal people's desire and preference. A boy, who likes football game, usually wears the soccer uniform with the same number as his favorite football player. For one thing, it takes his appreciation for this player, for another it tells us his best wish of being such a good player. A girl, who is interested in cartoon, often wears T-shirts with cartoon figurer printed, not only because they think these T-shirts are much more beautify than others without these pictures, but also she thinks it will make her lovelier just like the cartoon. Moreover, the way people act point out their attitudes and interests. When a boy meets his secret admirer, he is unconsciously more initiative and speaks more words to attract the girl's attention. This abnormal action exposes the boy's attitude about the girl. So, sometimes how people conduct and what they wear tells us their interests and attitudes.

Furthermore, the actions and appearance are affected by some other factors like custom and culture. By observing their behaviors and how people dress, we can understand some social ideas and values. For example, American is famous for its warm, cheerful, and not bothering the trifles. When we meet an American, he/she will say "hello" to you forwardly whether you are acquaintances. And they are not likely to judge a person by his/her appearance. No matter you wear a tie or a T-shirt, they all will admire you. And as for appearance, they like dress themselves with some colorful clothes, which shows their passion for life. And all these facts reflect that America is a nation pursuit equality, passion and respects.

However, when considering some deepest inner thoughts of people, the appearance and action may do not work. Because, some times people are not willing or unable to expose their deepest thoughts to others. Under some formal occasion, people conceal his love, heats, or jealous for somebody. For example, when a girl is jealous for others’ beauty in a formal party, and if she shows the jealousy out, it will make her as an ungracious girl, which cannot be tolerated in the etiquette. So most of the time, girls keeps the thoughts as their secrets, and smiles to everyone. No one may know there is such kind of things, except that she tells out. In addition, sometimes people have to act to follow their role in the society, which is the hidden rule. Otherwise, they will be abandoned by reality. For example, when a person is public officer, he must dress himself with uniform. This is the basic requirement of his occupation. Otherwise, leisure dressing decreases the prestige of government. However, it is possible that the person is a fashion follower, and if he does as he like, he will be fired by his superior, or complained by citizens. As a result, he always dresses them with unchangeable uniform, which is not his interest yet. From here we can see, on occasion our eyes lie to us.

In summary, appearance and conduct of people sometimes can tell their attitude and interest, but at times can not. And the way people look, dress and act are affected by society, and the way also reflects the ideas and values of society.

First of all, the way people look and dress reveal people's desire and preference. A boy, who likes football game, usually wears the soccer uniform with the same number as his favorite football player.(这个,个人觉得不一定耶,或者可以说,当看到一个小男孩穿着足球服,可以推测他很喜欢足球;更符合你的TS
For one thing, it takes his appreciation for this player, for another it tells us his best wish of being such a good player. A girl, who is interested in cartoon, often wears T-shirts with cartoon figurer printed, because she thinks these T-shirts are much more beautiful than others without these pictures, and she wishes it will make her lovelier just like the cartoon.

However, when considering some deepest inner thoughts of people, the appearance and actions may do not work. Because, some times people are not willing or unable to expose their deepest thoughts to others.(这个因果有些勉强,看了下文才明白过来) Under some formal occasion, people conceal his love, heats, or jealous for somebody. For example, when a girl is jealous for others' beauty in a formal party, and if she shows the jealousy out, it will make her an ungracious girl, which cannot be tolerated in the etiquette. So most of the time, she keeps the thoughts as their secrets, and smiles to everyone. No one may know there is such kind of emotions, except that she tells out. In addition, sometimes people must follow their role in the society, which is the hidden rule. Otherwise, they will be abandoned by reality. For example, when a person is a public officer, he must dress himself with uniform. This is the basic requirement of his occupation. Otherwise, leisure dressing impairs the prestige of government.

And the way people look, dress and act are affected by society, and the way also reflects the ideas and values of society.

https://bbs.gter.net/thread-1068182-1-1.html

TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.

"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

----------------------------------

It seems reasonable at the first glance that Discount Foods (DF) is better than Good-Taste Company (GT). The director has pointed out that the latter is expensive and considered "unbearable", and refuses to provide meals for people on special diets, while the former supplies delicious food. However, I find this argument unconvincing for failing to examine several important details carefully.

First, the director fails to explain how to reach the conclusion that GT is the second most expensive caterer in the city. Does it ranked by average price of food in this company, or the highest price, or the price for the Cedar Corporation (CC)? Actually, only the last figure may influence the decision of CC directly and should be considered seriously. Pitifully, relevant information is omitted in the argument.

Second, the director unfairly implies that the rising prices of GT are abnormal. It is very likely that the economy in the city has been suffering from inflation that all prices for living materials are increasing, and every company raises its prices. The arguer fails to show that GT has raised the prices much more sharply than the general level. Furthermore, perhaps GT has provided new services during the past three years, which increase costs and therefore the prices. The arguer does not exclude this possibility.

Third, a sample of 3 employees may be too small to present the staff of CC. Maybe they have special tastes which difficult to satisfy, or they may be epicures who are extremely critical about the quality of food. The director should investigate the attitude of all employees towards GT's food first. The investigation result will serve as a strong evidence for decision-making.

Fourth, the director unfairly ascribes the dissatisfaction of the 3 employees to GT's food while they do not refer to the food explicitly, neglecting other possible reasons. For example, the counters may be insufficient so that employees suffer from long queues and become impatient. The cafeteria is too crowded and noisy for people to enjoy meals. These affecting factors have no relations with food supplied by GT. The director should take all these factors into consideration.

Fifth, the director ignores a fatal factor, safety, for the cafeteria. Since DF is a family owned local company, its sales may be relatively small and it may be harder for DF to ensure fresh materials and sanitation during cooking processes than for GT. The director must assure DF is capable of providing safe food before hiring it as the provider.

At last, a single sample lunch can hardly represent the real level of DF's food. It is reasonable to suppose that sample lunches are always the best ones prepared by a company, as they are designed to attract customers. What is the average standard of lunches in DF? Can DF keep the high quality of sample lunches for long time? They remain questions. So it is hasty to consider DF as a better choice than GT just by a sample lunch.

To sum up, those flaws discussed above significantly weaken the conclusion. After supplementing sufficient information and expelling other possible factors, the director will be able to reach a valid conclusion.

TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 394          TIME: 00:44:16          DATE: 2010/3/7 16:46:03

It has been long argued how to improve the quality of education in colleges and universities. Here the author states an option that all faculties should spend time working in those courses-related careers. In my observation I think whether work outside concerns many different respects, and hence the working-outside policy cannot be required.

Admittedly, teachers spend time working in the companies relevant to their profession could bring several benefits. Firstly, professor could put his newest research achievement into practice, and then back to class, he can give the students the first hand experience, and students could absorb and understand the theories better and more quickly. Secondly, besides practice, he may also receive considerable rewards for his studies. Consider software and pharmaceutical fields, numerous new technologies come out of these companies. In short, the working-outside policy could be beneficial. In short, working outside the academic world could help professors realizing their theories and research results.

However, while teachers do their jobs in companies, they may therefore spend less time on the classes and attention to their students. Compare to teaching knowledge and devote themselves to the endless experiments, some may consider the outside jobs related to commercial to be more rewarding and tempting. It is human nature to pursue things which is materially attracting. So the outside jobs could distract professors concentration.

Furthermore, not all faculties could find perfectly fit positions in the commercial world. Some professions such as math and philosophy, they pursuit theoretical achievement rather than material results. If we force these faculties to follow the working-outside policy, they can hardly find one, needless to say whether they suit the jobs or not. Therefore we can encourage them rather than force all faculties to obey this rule.

In sum, I disagree with the author's opinion that all faculty should be ordered to spend time in those professionally related jobs. Although it could help both professors and students in their professions, we should also focus on the negative effects that working outside could distract professors’ attention and, meanwhile some faculties could feel hard to search a perfectly fit position. So, to better solve this problem we can encourage them instead of compulsively put them into the outside world. At the same time, we can set up rules to discipline the professors working schedule in order to balance the teaching time and outside working time.

It has been long argued +that how to improve the quality of education in colleges and universities. Here the author states->presents or proposes an option that all faculties should spend time working in those courses-related careers. In my observation I think whether work outside concerns many different respects, and hence the working-outside policy cannot be required.

Admittedly, teachers spend time working in the companies relevant to their profession could bring several benefits. Firstly, professor could put his newest research achievement into practice, and then +bring back to class, he can give the students the first hand experience, and students could absorb and understand the theories better and more quickly.

Compare-> compared to teaching knowledge and devote themselves to the endless experiments, some may consider the outside jobs related to commercial to be more rewarding and tempting. It is human nature to pursue things which is materially attracting. So->therefore the outside jobs could distract professors concentration.

At the same time, we can set up rules to discipline the professors working schedule in order to balance->make a balance the teaching time and outside working time.

ISSUE69 qisaiman- "Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"
WORDS: 480
TIME: xxx
DATE: 2010-3-4 18:46:27

Should government place restrictions on scientific research and development? Although sometimes scientific achievements may be potentially harmful, I maintain that scientific research should receive little restrictions from the government, unless the public resource is involved.

To begin with, we have witnessed that scientific developments have brought tremendous changes towards the society, most of which are helpful for government to perform its obligations and thus benefit the public. This, to a large extent, depends on the primary goal of science and technology -- to improve the efficiency of people and promote social progress. For example, medical advancement has increased the lifespan and cures many diseases which once tortured the patients. Agricultural advancement, such as hybrid rice, has to a considerable degree address one of the most persistent problems confronting us, the grain supply. Hence, scientific advancement, if properly used, can lend great help to government in realizing its duty more efficiently.

In addition, one who advocates restricting to research will find it difficult to use appropriate measures to evaluate the possible consequences of most scientific studies. This is due to the scientific gains cannot be readily predicted by most of us, even the scientists themselves. For instance, the research of the mutual impacts between culture and gene on the evolution of human beings tends to last for decades before reaching any definite achievements. Since one cannot guarantee the restrict will not eliminate some changes science may bring to do public good and enrich the knowledge of mankind, governor should not confine those researches at will.

Furthermore, scientific study, by its nature, cannot enhance the public good directly, especially in modern society where the division of labour is of highly divergence. Most times it is the market where the society and science meet. Many scientific achievements, particularly the lucrative ones, will find the way from the market force. For instance, drug study, which usually promises huge profit, can be applied under the invisible hand in most time, thus needing little concern from the government. Yet, worthy of notice is that the market is not all round. Actually, there are some researches bringing few profit yet meaningful to the society. Hence, government should encourage and support those researches, such as the devices to help the disadvantaged.

Admittedly, I am not denying that the government could permit whatever the scientific research do. Attention should be paid to those which can bring devastating damage to the society, even the danger is loom. Meanwhile, when it comes to the distribution of public resource to scientific research, government should develop a comprehensive consideration among all the possible benefit, especially the underprivileged group.

In conclusion, as the history has indicated, scientific research and advancement have contributed so much to the social progress. Considering the potential harmful consequences brought by the control on scientific research and the unpredictable standards on restriction, government should concentrate on more immediate or predictable issues rather than contain the development of science and technology.

对于这个issue,原题说的是..place few,if any,...

50. "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

The speaker asserts that all faculty should spend their time working outside academic circles for the purpose of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. I concede that the faculty in some applied academic fields working in professions relevant to the courses they teach can improve the education quality to a certain extent. In many disciplines, however, it is utterly useless, if not worse.
There is little doubt that a class only full of formulas, laws and terminologies, is monotonous and uninspiring. on the contrary, vivid examples can help students understand the professional knowledge more effectively, especially in the realm of mechanics, architecture, business, laws etc. The faculty in those practical subjects taking a part-job relevant to their academic fields can gain first-hand experience and know many latest informations so that they can use practical examples to explain complex concepts . A professor of economics is concurrently an investment consultant, for instance, can give plenty of cases which are closer to real market so that students may understand the modern investment theory better.
What is more, for students who are hoping for good jobs after graduation, teachers with relevant working experience are better able to help their students to make personal job developing plans. With the help of those teachers, students will have access to the up-to-date market information, so that they can know clearly the developing trend of their chosen fields. After all, it is hard for the normal careers guidance officers to provide such specific suggestions.
It is clear, however, that not every teacher can find a profession relevant to the courses they teach. Take a cosmologist for example, what company will hire him/her? Furthermore, it is maybe a waste of time for the teachers in the field of pure science and humanities to work outside the academic world. The aim of those disciplines is to study the basic theories and cultivate reserve talents of their disciplines. And there is little evidence that those teachers can profit from the non-academic work, if they have. a ecologist, for instance, can go on TV to popularize environmental protection knowledge, but I do not think this work contributes to the quality of instruction and research. Compared with the social activities experience, research findings and original academic viewpoints are more valuable for students who want to be engaged in research after graduation.
And even though it is necessary for teachers of applied disciplines to keep in touch with the companies relevant to the courses they teach. However, there are also other ways to achieve this. For example, they can get latest market information through the various media, such as newspapers, television, and Internet media. Besides, they are able to communicate with the person who have relevant industry experience by participating some industry conferences. Thus, spending time working outside academia is just one of the various ways to gain information.
To sum up, except for some pure science and humanities, faculty working outside the academic world is a good method to get latest information which can make the lessons lively and interesting, even though its not the only method.
