Fancy Brand Logos Send Mixed Messages

some peple pay big bucks for a designer handbag or a luxury car, and the distinctive logo that goes along with them. Now scientists have learnt that other people pay even more to leave the logo behind. The findings appeared in the Journal of Marketing, high-end goods are often ostentatiously labelled, after all, you spend all that money on the stata symbol, you wanna make sure that other folks recoganize your good taste, even in a distance. But researchers surveying californian consumers, found that people who are seriously well-off are willing to pay a premium for items whose branding is more discrete. These pretitious don't need goddy symbols to advertize their wealth. Stata seekers, on the other hand, are drawn to more obvious logos. These designer items, let the less affluent know that they've been outclassed. The irony is that the logos mostly serve to alert the pretretions that the owner's not one of them. In under the proposals that you buy flashy counterfeit items that for most part don't flu any way.The lesson for marketers, when it comes to branding, less may be more, and you can charge a higher price for it too.

Evolution of the Neck Gave Brain a Leg up

What's in a neck? Well it's a good place to hang a pendent or a tie, or to rest your head. Now scientists say that by separating our heads from our bodies, the neck gave our brains a leg up evolution. The findings appear in the online journal---Nature Communications. Not all  animals have necks, a fish's head is pretty much continuous with its body, and a fish gets around just fine. Nerves based in the fish's brain instruct its fins to move, then off it goes. But something happened when our aquatic ancestors first  saluted on to the land, the sources of the nerve cells that power the animal's four limbs shifted from the brain down to the spinal cord. That move allowed the body to grow more distant from the head, taking the arms with it, and so the neck was born. That neck, say the scientists, was more than a way just to keep the head off the shoulders. The anatomical relocation, improved axterity by leaving the arms free to move in new ways, and the resulting flexibility helpd to shape the evolution of  our heads and our hands, then how we can use them together to do all sorts of nifty things, like tie up off to the winds or not.

What’s in a neck? Well, it’s a good place to hang a pendant or a tie. Or to rest your head. Not all animals have necks. A fish's head is pretty much continuous with its body. And a fish gets around just fine. Nerves based in the fish’s brain instruct its fins to move, and off it goes.
But something happened when our aquatic ancestors first slithered onto the land. The source of the nerve cells that power the animals’ forelimbs shifted, from the brain to the spinal cord. That move allowed the body to grow more distant from the head, taking the arms with it. And so the neck was born.

That neck, say the scientists, was more than just a way to keep the head off the shoulders. The anatomical relocation improved dexterity by leaving the arms free to move in new ways. And the resulting flexibility helped shape the evolution of our heads and our hands, and how we can use them together to do all sorts of nifty things—like tie a perfect Windsor knot.

Spend any time in a bar, and sooner or later you’ll hear, “I’ll have what she’s having.” It sounds like a bad pickup line, but there may bean actual biological basis for this kind of alcohol copycat(无主见的家伙) behavior. Because scientists have found that having the gene for a certain dopamine(多巴胺(治疗脑神经病的药物)) receptor(受体) could predispose(预先安排) you to being influenced by the sight of other people drinking.

Volunteers were ushered into a lab set up to look like a pub. They were asked to do some busywork, then told that during the break they should help themselves to some adult beverages. While they watched, shills planted by the scientists immediately liquored up.

The study subjects were then tracked to see how much they drank after watching others toss ‘em back(一饮而尽). When the plants could be seen having just one drink, all the subjects drank similar amounts. But when the plants had at least three drinks, some participants drank twice as much as others. And DNA tests showed that the heavier drinkers had a particular variant of a dopamine receptor called DRD4. The work appears in the journal Psychological Science.

Next, the search for genes that make people order drinks with those little umbrellas.

Here’s what scientists think happened, oh, about a hundred million years ago. There was this three-star system. The three linked stars were strolling through the Milky Way but got too close to the giant black hole at the center. The hole swallowed one of those stars and hurled away the other two. Those two careening stars merged to form one super-hot, incredibly fast-moving blue star, which is now on the very outskirts of the Milky Way..And here’s how scientists came up with that dramatic tale, which they just published in Astrophysicial Journal Letters.

They discovered what they call a hypervelocity star, which moves three times faster than our sun does through the galaxy. According to new information provided by the Hubble telescope, the star originated deep within the Milky Way.
The scientists used the Hubble to figure out the direction of the star’s travels and the distance from the galactic center, along with the star’s mass, age and speed. Its unusual attributes give rise to the idea that one star was swallowed and transferred its momentum to the other two, which transformed into a blue superstar. Hurtling through the galaxy, faster than a speeding sun.

stroll vi. 1.

hurlvt. 1.

mergevt. & vi.

outskirt n. 1.

hypervelocity n. 1.

momentum n.

Hurtling adj. 1.
