pennant:a flag emblematic of championship (as in a professional baseball league); also : the championship itself
The last few weeks of the regular American professional baseball season are known as a pennant race.
pennant drive 应该是pennant race的意思:锦标赛

The data on baseball injuries was presented the same day as Pettitte’s early departure at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic(整形外科的) Society for Sports Medicine in Providence, Rhode Island. Which makes sense because that’s Red Sox country and most of the Sox seem to be on the disabled list.

The study looked at all players who were put on the disabled list from 2002 to 2008. Pitchers were 34 percent more likely than non-pitchers to suffer injuries. And pitchers accounted for almost two-thirds of all the time(始终)

Clothing is so yesterday.I mean ,really, what can it do?It can't pick up sound or beep (at us if) something is wrong.or can it?MIT researchers say they've developed a fiber that (would) allow clothing to eventually do those things.Their study is in the journal Natural Materials.

A big key to the fiber is a plastic commonly used (in) microphones. It's praticular (molecular) structure involves a (lopsided arrangement)  of (fluorine atoms) on one side and (hydrogen atoms) on the other. That (asymmetry) makes the plastic (piezoelectric):It changes shape when it in (encounters) an electric field.

So any electric (current) will then cost the fibers to viberate. The fibers could act as a microphone or a speaker.Depending on whether the viberations were being recorded or (amplified).

The clothing mic could capture speech, sure. But it could also (monitor) health by detecting almost (imperceptible) sounds from the body.Sounds like blood flow which could make a (shirt) a 24-hour blood-pressure monitor. So maybe some day your clothes will say"i detect a rise in blood pressue.please sit down."

Some bacteria have (adapted to) super cold environments for millions of years. And scientists (have isolated) some of the (essential) genes that (allow) bacteria to (tolerate their harsh) living conditions--Because these same genes might help in the creation of new (vaccines). The investigators published their findings in the  Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers from the University of Victoria in British,Columbia (isolated) temperature --(sensitive) genes from some bacteria that (thrive)in the (frigid Arctic). They (inserted)nine of these cold-living genes into a bacterial (pathogen) called (Francisella tularensis). At about room temperature, the cells (propagated). But when they had to (cope with) the warmth of (equivalent) to the (core body temps of mammals),the bacteria died.

So the scientists injected these engineered (pathogen)into rats and mice at cool parts  of the body, such as the (fleshy) regions of the ear and base of the tail. The bacteria survived near the skin, but (perished prior to reaching the internal organs). And before they expired the bacterial generated a protective (immune response in the) animals. The scientists  hope to use this tool to create live (vaccines) that will (confer) (immunity)--Before they die from our too warm welcome.

A new study finds that mammals with larger brains-- relative to body size---tend to live longer.

It's been a question evolutionary biologists have  (spent years) trying to answer:why would nature favor the development of a large brain?Something that requires more time to mature and uses (up) so much more energy? The classical thinking has been that large brains provide the (sort) of (cognitive capacity) needed to survive (in an ever-changing) environment, like the sudden loss of food or the (appearance of a new predator).

Now scientists (have added) a new factor to consider. The (team analysed) nearly five hundred (species) of mammals (from across) the globe, from bats to (felines),(ungulates and marsupials). And they found that (indeed) large-brained mammals tend to live longer than those (with) smaller brains--the study was published this week in the Journal for Evolutionary Biology, but the () according to the authors is that those mammals with long (lifespan) not only have more chances to reproduce but also have a longer (reproductive cycle) to allow more time for child (rearing). The researchers (analyzed) other (variables) that could affect longevity like diet, environment,(metabolic rates) and found the most significant (predictor) of longevity was brain size.

The author stress ,however, this is just a (correlation)but  not causation. So on the one hand,it might be that a larger brain favors a long (lifespan),but the opposite (could also) be ture that a longer (lifespan) favors a large brain.

In any event,it seems size does matter,at least when it comes to (grey matter)

It's a restful sound, waves, unless they (happen to be submerging)the island (or coastal plain) you call home.A combination of climate change and bad environment practices like coral mining is now swamping some (low-lying lands).

Take the islands (off) the coast Panama. These (Caribbean) islands regularly find themselves (inundated with) seawater for days--and some (indigenous inhabitants) have begun to move to (hillsides) on the main land.

Your research from the National (Center for Atmospheric) Research suggests the climate change is already  causing even greater sea level rise along the coastlines (of the Bay of Bengal).(the Arabian) sea,Sri lanka,Somatra and Java--(coastlines inhabited) by hundreds of millions of people. The same climate change is also responsible for falling sea levels around the (Seachelles)and a (protential weakening of the monsoons).

(Satellite images and) historical photos in other research suggest some Parcific islands (have proven) (resilient) to sea level rise (of roughly 17 centimeters over the last century) (largely) thanks to coarls continue to provide a (steady) supply (of) (island-)building material.

But rising sea levels thanks to global warming is a problem we'd better be prepared for.

100718 large brains

A new study finds that mammals with larger brains, relative to their body size tend to live longer. And it’s been a question evolutionary biologists have spent years trying to answer. Why would nature favor the development of a large brain, something that requires more time to mature and uses up so much more energy? Well, the classic thinking has been large brains provide a sort of cognitive capacity needed to survive in an ever-changing environment like the sudden loss of food, or the appearance of a new predator. Well now scientists have added a new factor to consider. They analyzed nearly 500 species of mammals across the globe, from bats to felines, ungulates and marsupials. And they found that indeed large brain mammals tend to live longer than those with smaller brains. The study was published this week in the journal for Evolutionary Biology.

Well, the upshot according to the author, is that those mammals with longer life spans not only have more chances to reproduce, but also have a longer reproductive cycle to allow more time for child rearing. The researchers analyzed other variables that could affect longevity like diet, environment, metabolic rates and found the most significant predictor of longevity was brain size. They stress, however, this is just correlation not causation, so on the one hand, it might be that a larger brain favors a long life span. But the opposite could also be true that a longer life span favors a large brain. In any event, it seems that size does matter; at least when it comes to grey
matter.

There are(The earth’s ) tropics teams (teem)with species
there (They are )far more biologically diverse than the colder(cooler) parts in(of) the planet.
And scientists have credited higher temperatures and greater than (amount)of sunlights.
But a new study claimed(claims) that the secret of(to) biodiversity tropical is not necessarily high temperatures. It’s <the> unsteady(steadiness of ) those temperatures the whole year round.
When today<’s> biodiversity was(isn’t) taken(taking) shaped millions of years around(ago), seasons as we know today(them) didn’t exist.
So temperatures all over the planet is much more consistent than they are today, even in reasons(regions) temperatures were low.
Researches looked at insect diversity today at the temper (temperate) Harvard <Forest> in <Massachusetts> in tropical costorigo(Costa Rica), and in the 15th million year old macfasobeal (53-million-year-old McAbee fossil bed)in british Columbia. <The work appears in the journal Paleobiology>
So we may have been thinking backwards—it’s not that the tropics have greater biodiversity. Could be that the seasons of today’s temperate <zones> have diminished the biodiversity that once flowered. And animaled.

A couple of studies on perception. First there's now visual date back up the idea that everything looks kind of gray when you feel blue.

Researchers examined how the retina responds to different black and white contrast situations. They did tests on healthy subjects and on patients with depression, turns out the depressed people have much lower retinal responses. Even if they are on antidepressants. And the worse the depression, the worse the performance of  the retina.

In fact the retinal reaction alone was a good diagnostic of depression. So the world really can look bluhhh to somebody who is depressed. The research in the journal biological psychiatry.

Study 2 looked at test subjects' impressions of honesty of simple factual statements made by other people. Researchers found that listeners were less likely to believe speakers with foreign accents. And heavier the accent, the less believable they were perceived to be. The works appears in the journal of experimental social phsychology.

So our own accents preferences can affect how much we accept things we hear from reporters ...方言听不懂

retina--视网膜
bluhhh--啥意思啊?
antidepressants--抗抑郁药
diagnostic -- 诊疗
God Bless me!
我想我可以的!是一定可以的!是一定一定不错的!
