对于general subjects 这个问题我也曾疑惑
搜索过找到的解释不多...只有一些零碎的 but it may help:

To get a bachelor’s degree, students traditionally take general subjects during the first two years.
These include areas like history, literature, mathematics and science.

9.13 作业

中秋节快乐! 楼下的幸苦了

Agree or disagree: The best way to truly relax and reduce stress is to spend time alone.(2007.9.25)

Living in a fast pace modern society, people need to work harder to catch up with the development. And thus how to deal with the pressure brought about by it is worthy of discussion. Some people insist that the best way to reduce stress is to spend time alone, conversely, I propose that people spend time with others, such as family members and friends, or even other people never meet before.

Admittedly, people can have a peaceful and quiet environment to enjoy themselves by keeping alone, however, I would doubt that it is the best way to reduce stress. My experience tells me that being alone for a long time can increase the stress rather than reduce it. For example, I find that high-school students like to play with others do better in the college entrance examination than those who always stay alone. As you know, happiness is the impetus of learning. Students with a happy mind work more efficiently and are more optimistic about future, which reinforce their ability to cope with difficulties and pressure. On contrary, students always alone are entangled with insomnia, depression or other psychological problems. Most of suicide people feel lonely and desperate when they make the decision to end their lives. Many people with psychological problems live without enough social contact or satisfying relationship with others.  
Spending time alone is not a good way or at least not the best way to loosen your strained nerves.

Moreover, as a scientific research shows, spending time with other people and trying to do something rarely do can help to get rid of pressure faster than spending time alone. Such as going out to hike and have a picnic with family members can both extract attention from disturbing work to the delightful family activities and strengthen the family tie. We might also get some inspirations from other people when play with them or expel pessimistic thought by talking with them. For example, advertiser can get inspirations for the new advertisement when enjoy the happiness with close friends or by their words which might be thought about for a long time. Friends can cheer us up when we are down and can share their happiness with us which make us happy too. We can forget the sorrow of losing when communicating and laughing with close friends.

However, overdue social activity increases the pressure especially when being together with someone always negative about life or hard to communicate with. Thinking about being together with someone you really hate, would you like to spend time with she/he to relax yourself? Of course no one will do. To have truly relaxation is to spend time with those who you love and who love you. Flattering or bearing contribute nothing to reduce stress.

In all, as far as I am concerned, despite some positive effect of staying alone, its negative influence render it not the best way to get truly relaxation. The best way to reduce stress is to spend time with people who love you or who you love.
