TOPIC: ARGUMENT216 - The following appeared in a magazine article about planning for retirement.

"Because of its spectacular natural beauty and consistent climate, Clearview should be a top choice for anyone seeking a place to retire. As a bonus, housing costs in Clearview have fallen significantly during the past year, and real estate taxes remain lower than those in neighboring towns. Nevertheless, Clearview's mayor promises many new programs to improve schools, streets, and public services. Retirees in Clearview can also expect excellent health care as they grow older, since the number of physicians in the area is far greater than the national average."




Owing to Clearview' s spectacular natural beauty and consistent climate, the argument recommend that Clearview should be the best place for anyone to retire.The author cites the fact that housing costs in Clearview have fallen considerably during the past year and real estate taxes remain lower than those in neighboring towns to  show the fees in Clearview is cheap. The author also points out Clearview' s mayor promises many programs to improve schools ,streets, and public services. At last , the auther mentions the high number of physicians in the area to show retirees in Clearview would have excellent health care. However, the argument suffers several flaws, which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, natural beauty and consistent climate  is not the only fator to evaluate a city for retirement and there are many factors should be taken into account.  As is known to all, people may be much concerned with the public security ,however, the author fails to show whether it is safe to live in Clearview. Without taking that into account , it is too hastily to estimate the place to be the best.

Secondly, decrease in housing costs and lower real estate taxes are insufficient to show living in Cleverview is cheap.  Without the primary housing costs , we could not determine whether the housing price is rather low after the reduction. It is entirely possible that the housing price is still much higher than other places and total costs is also higher than that of others ,even though the real estate price is rather low.

Thirdly, the number of physicians in town could not reflect the medical conditions. The argument provide no evidence to show that physicians tend to work in the place they lived. Lacking that evidence ,it is entirely possible that most physicians tend to work in other cities. If this is the case, the number of physicians may have nothing to do with the medical conditions.  

In sum , the arguer's recommendation that Clearview should be a top choice for retirement is not so convinsing as it stands. To bolster it ,the author must provide other factors ,such as safety, traffic, to substantiate that Clearview is fit for retire. The author should also substantiate the number of physician could reflect the level of medical treatment. If the argument has included the given factors discussed above , it would have been more thorough and logically acceptable.
