If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable
Can any means be taken no matter how contemptible it is if the purpose is worthy? The speaker claims so. I concede that persistence and efforts regardless of the consequence are required by success, for it can inspire potentiality and enthusiasm of a person to achieve his goal. Nevertheless, we must prevent some illegal and immoral means out of egotistic and evil side of human nature; otherwise, our world will fall into a mess with vicious competition. 14:23 In order to attain success, people are required to make more efforts than average people does. Fierce environment of competition and rapid pace development of society inform people of cruel surroundings to overcome difficulties and move obstacles standing in the way of goals so that one can get nearer steps to his final goal. Yet, it is natural that even with 100% efforts for a long time, a hard-working person still stay far away from success. For such condition, the most monmentous point for people to think about is how to get success, thus with continuous persistence and ambition to fight against obstacles, a goup of people who make the best of their intellect and advantages to get the ultimate success in their personal life spring up. Hayek, the famous Nobel laureate, who is famous for his defense of free-market capitalism to against communists, achieved his worldly ideas after hard-working on research for many years. His experience in World War I has made his highly awareness to avoid mistakes, proved by the thriving economy of many countries who applied his theory. That's his unique experience and his persistence in research on his chosen field that Hayek regard as his main mean to his achievement.14:44 While the decision to get a successful accomplishment is worthy of highly
praise, someone who use immoral and illegal approach for their own goal must be banned and legitimated. Engaged by wealthy possession and speculation without any laborious endeavor, someone earn money or pursue position regardless morality. A cunning politician may cheat in votes to get positions or collide with business to gain big profits; A business man may monopolize market with below-cost price; A student may cheat in exam to get a full scholarship in university. These kinds of people achieve their goal by cheating, speculating and such kinds of thing in which the social balance will be break and morality establishment will be destroy, which is unfair to other people within the field and may result in vicious competition among people. What's worse, it can cause damage in economy, since its monopoly among market only benefits its own company and gain profits without threat of other components; it can cause entrust through voters that what the government do is only on the intention of gaining profits from this country, not the ultimate interest of the public; it can cause lose of credibility among students that university may stop providing scholarship to any students who have remarkable grades in the test. According to the scenarios given above, people should be aware of morality and laws instead of blindly pursuing their interests, and government should also pay attention to restrict such behavior and establish a sound morale atmosphere. Simply put, efforts to attain success should be taken in reasonable ways; otherwise, contemptible means are malignant both personally and socially. |
