Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Are leaders created by demands? It depends. Leaders exist in different organizations which belong to divergent fields. In most situations, it is necessary for a person who can be selected as a leader to master strong communication skills, acquire suitable professional qaulities and have teamwork skills without meeting any demands. Howerver, in certain circumstances, often in political field, leaders need to conform to the demands from the interest groups in order to get support from those communities.

Firstly, to master strong communication skills is of great use for leadership positions. For example, in universities, the Student-Unions are very influential organizations and usually consist of lots of departments with different functions. Senior members in liaison department have to communicate with other members in propaganda department to solve problems such as raising funds which supports the activity held by the SU. At the same time, they also need to show their willingness to receive other fellow members’ ideas and suggestions on the plan. Through demonstrating their communication ability, they will have the chance to take up leadership positons such as the ministers of liaison department,even the chairmen of the Student-Union.

In addition to communication skills, leaders must equip with suitable professional qualifications and acquire teamwork skills. Take the CEO in a big corporation for instance. As a leader in a firm, it is clear that s/he is not only proficient in professional skills, but also acquires the ability about how to make teammates work cohesively and efficiently together. In other words, only if the person has relevent profeesional qualifications, can s/he deeply understand how the corporation works and exactly know how to improve the inefficiency. Similarly, to acquire teamwork skills could make the team more efficient than before and obtain trusts from team members. Indeed, such abilities are indespensable for leaders in corporations rather than the demands that are palced on them.

However, in some areas such as political fields, there is another story. While it is also important for the leaders in political areas to acquire those skills said above, the demands coming from interest groups usually decide who will be the leaders. For example, during the presidential election, those who will be likely to be elected as leaders are usually born in the powerful families. To some extent, they themselves represent some kind of interests. Once their ideals conform to the demands of some financial growps, they will be backed up. So, to become a leader in political way, one must meet the demands from relevant interest groups.



In conclusion, in most organizations, people selected as leaders depend on their own abilities including strong communication skills, teamwork awareness and qualified professional background. Nevertheless, in political situation, people may become leaders because of demands placed on them.

A recent study rating 300 male and female Mentian advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than 6 hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. These results suggest that if a business wants to prosper, it should hire only people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night.
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

According the article, it is argued that in order to succeed, companies should hire employees who need less sleep based on the survey of 300 executives from advertising industry. A number of assumptions have been made in this argument which we need to examine critically to decide if the argument is valid.

To begin with, it is assumed that all the executives are honest when answered the questions about their lifestyles. In other words, the report in the study was reliable without doubt. But, there are many other possible reasons why these executives may not tell the truth. Maybe they just want to show their enthusiasm towards the firms, or deliberately leave their workmates good impression. Without further data to verify the reliability of the survey results, the conclusion may not be reasonable.

Another assumption is that it is the sleep pattern that leads to a firm’s prosper. The author fails to establish a causal relationship between a executive’s sleep time and the future of a company. Lots of factors unrelated to sleep may be the reasons of the success. For example, the executive may have a powerful group which always could achieve their goals. Or maybe the advertising is a rising industry, in which most of the companies develop rapidly and have higher profit margins. So, if other factors lead to the success of these companies, the argument would not be very strong.
