Argument 4
The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.


"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town-Adams Realty and Fitch Realty-Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."





In this argument, the author recommends using Adams to sell homes. To support this points, the author compares Adams with Fitch Realty, which is also one of the
leading real estates, in several aspects including number of real estate agent, revenue,average number of home sales. Also , the arguer cites a fact that it takes one month to sell his or her home today when listing it with Adams, and it is quite faster than the time Fitch costs to sell the writor's anther home ten years ago. However, the argument suffers several flaws which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, the author's assumption that homes litsted with Adams sell faster than Adams is unconvincing owing to that phenomena of ten years ago can not present the current condition. In the arguement ,we know that Ten years ago, Fitch used four months to sell a house ,but we know little about how fast it sells houses now.Perhaps,Fitch can sell a house in one week. So,the auther's comparison between the current time used by Adams to sell a house and that of Fith's is unreasonable.Further more, as we know, some houses are easy to sold than others owing to its specific advantages ,such as good scenery. The author fails to compare his or her two houses.

Secondly, without comparing the scale of each real estate agents, comparing between the number of agents is meaningless. The author may assume Fitch is not as larger as Adams in spite that Adams has more agents and thus Adams can deal with besiness faster than Fitch. However, without comparing the scale of the two company's agents ,it is likely one Fitch's agent is much larger than Adams and can do twice the work than that of Adams and thus Fitch may have a better capacitiy than Adams in term of dealing business.

In the meantime, it is impssible to draw conclusion that price listed with Adam will be better than Fitch's from the merely fact that Adams's revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch. Perhaps, the reason why Adams has so much revenue is that Adams's price for sellers is low and they can sell to others in a much higher price.

In sum, the argument is not convinsing as it stands. To bolster it , the auther must provide the average time that Fitch used to sell a house and compare it with that of Adams.Also, the arguer should show some clear evidence to show the price in Adams is better Fitch's.
