TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
There seems to be confusion about whether it is the artist or the critic provides something of permanent value to the society. Some maintain that it the artist, rather than the critic create the priceless treasure of the society.Personally, the issue has been over simplified. The critics also play a crucial role in attaching value to art works.
Admittedly, it is the artists create the masterpieces of great value, not only material but also spiritual. Annually at large auctions, many art collectors are willing to pay thousands of millions of dollars to buy a piece of art of a prestigious painter for different reasons. Some regard the collection as a symbol of their wealth and status, while others are impressed with fabulous imagination, as well as the spirit, like peace, heroism, and belief, presented by art. People around the world are immersed in the Moonlight Sonata of Beethoven, inspired by the Liberty Leading the People of Delacroix, and touched by the Schindler's List of Spielberg the value of which will endure in the future.
The critics, however, also add value to works by assessing the quality of the art works, as well as by enriching the public’s interpretation of the works. The constructive comments drawn by some influential critics exert a far-reaching impact on the value of the works. Many masterpieces, like Van Gogh's paintings and Thoreau’s “Walden”, failed to cater the taste of the critics in their time. As a result, Van Gogh merely managed to sell one piece of his painting, and Thoreau had seven tenth of his published books in his cottage. Not until the later critics recognized the profound meanings of their works did they become internationally famous. Moreover, the critics make the meaning of the art work easier to be comprehended by the layman. Without the professional criticism, we can hardly understand what the surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, expresses in the painting, “the Persistence of Memory” It is not uncommon that people refer to the criticism in the newspapers, art bulletins and books to learn the background and true meaning of these works precisely. Although subjective judgments cannot be fully avoided, most critics with a sharp eye for art and a good command of art theories and history make the impartial comments on the works.
Additionally, the critics largely influence the improvement of the artists, and even promote the advancement of the art area. Some artists realize their deficiency through the unbiased comments on their works and therefore they can correct them. Besides, some critics boosted the development of the art world. For example, internationally famous French critic Pierre Restany, coined the term "New Realism" and led a group of artists to launch the evolution of the new aspect of art. The critics, through their own ways, raise the value of the works created by the artists. Only with the stimuli of the praise and criticism of the critics can the artists and the whole art world keep making progress.
Overall, What the critics to the artists is the gardeners to the trees. Without each other, neither of them will be able to create any value to the society. Both the artist and the critic are integral parts of the art world, bringing new valuable things, no matter material or spiritual, to the society. |
