ISSUE 138
"Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
失败是成功之母
There is no denying the fact that there can be discovery or progress through mistakes, insofar as it describes at least an element of the positive aspect of mistake, but what is a matter of the debate is that whether we should ascribe the success only to mistakes. Upon further reflection it becomes apparent that we should not. In other words, I do agree the ostensible notion that mistakes can make positive push to be success. Yet, strictly followed, I believe the conclusion the speaker deems also deserves careful consideration.
Admittedly, the speaker’s claim, at first glance, seems to be somewhat appealing, for it is an approaching to success as offering us a wholly new perspective to observing, and also finds ample empirical supports. It accords with the history of the development of humankind, on societal level, which is filled with human making mistakes , and such trial-and-error, such as the bomb experiments Nobel have made, the bulb Edison have created and so on, provides the very foundation for discovery and true progress, in all realms of human endeavors. From personal level, our learning how to walk as infants, by falling down again and again, also lends credence to lots of help to success that mistakes offer.
However, considering the only way to success is to make mistakes is also an exclusive one would pose certain problems, which might outweigh the benefits, noted above.
Aside from the provisos mentioned above, we should reevaluate or to clarify what does mistake have to do with success? In this very notion lies my first contention with the speaker, who obstinately presumes with confidence that making mistake is the only way to make progress. Generally speaking, then, undue attention to the benefits from mistakes tends to lead us to fail to take into account the fact that there is no necessary connection between mistake and success. One needs look no further than the grudges, resentments, frustrations, as well as the damaging to self-confidence and assertiveness caused by making mistakes, which serves to underscore the point that mistakes cannot lead you immediate to success everytime.
An even more telling example opposing the speaker’s claim is the nuclear accident. We find ourselves on a slippery slope toward not been informed of the accident happened in the nuclear test center, which would apparently stimulate broad (pandemic) panic in the whole world. Reflecting on malpractice in hospital makes clear that mistake can cause great loss. Is making mistakes always the good one? Emphatically, no. Implicit implication behind the statement is the rationale that how you face the mistakes.
Considerable though the merit that mistakes do useful to achievements, people should never ignore the key point is not the mistake itself to decide whether to success or to fail, but the attitude facing the mistake and the courage of correcting it. When facing directly to mistakes, we should not be arrogant and stubborn, by the same token, we should not be down-hearted and regretful, which on the contrary we should pursuing what accounts for it in combination of calmness and humility, simultaneously, we should be positive to find other ways to try.
With respect to all the problems discussed above, I agree that the speaker’s claim that making mistake is the only way to discovery and progress begs the question, notwithstanding the fact that mistake is one of the ways to success. In the final analysis, I would be willing to say that having the pursuit of progress and practical work seriously and be brave to conquer the difficulties, success will await without mistakes. |
