TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

According to a recent survey, an increasing number of the faculty in the colleges and universities feel delightful to teach students who always put forward different kinds of questions, preferably those who can exchange opinions established through critical thinking with them freely.  It has become a general trend to encourage students to bring a certain skepticism to whatever they learn.

To begin with, the skepticism put students in a favorable position to deepen the understanding of what they've learned, as well as to develop the ability to think critically. It is often the case that asserting the absolute authority in any area leads to suppress the inspiration, invention, innovation which play an essential role in the process of study. Conversely, no matter their doubt is reasonable or not ,the students who have the courage to challenge the widely accepted opinions or theories manage to keep the activity of their brain and deepen their insight, and hence render comprehensions of what they’ve study more precisely through correcting or being corrected . Moreover, by collecting evidence and data to prove their opinions, the students gradually cultivate the ability of critical and independent thinking which is vital and helpful when they are faced with something tough to handle.

Additionally, skepticism boosts the development of all the academic areas, more or less. The progress of most scholarly field begins with question an extraordinary phenomenon or the publicly acknowledged theories. In the history of the improvement of the theories of physics, there is an example that compellingly illustrates the power of critical thinking. In the early twentieth century, when the widely recognized classical physics were adopted by the physicists, as the primary principle, to explain all the physical phenomena, there are still some phenomena that could not be clarified by the classical physics. Dutch physicist Lorentz who had established the equations of Lorentz Transformation, similar to the equation set up by Einstein later, failed to make a breakthrough, because he was unable to step out of the frame of the classical physics. Einstein, however, realized that it is futile and insensible to stick to the seemingly unquestionable theories. Thanks to his critical thinking, he finally managed to establish the theories of relativity, while many other scientists failed to transcend the limitation of classical physics though on the verge of this invention.

Assuredly, no one can deny the profound effect exerted by the skepticism on the study of the students. Meanwhile, encouraging skepticism is not meant to refute all the existing theories and knowledge, but rather to lead the students to find the flaws and create new theories; therefore, promote the development of different areas. If the students merely doubt everything they've learned, they are entirely likely to ignore the basic knowledge, the base of critical thinking, which will result in a counterproductive consequence.

Overall, both of believing all or doubting all is the extreme which everyone should avoid. Then what should we do to strike a balance between the two extremes? Perhaps Aristotle have already offered the answer,“Plato is dear to me,but dearer still is truth.”Based on the reliable knowledge, thinking critically, we are sure to bring the civilization, in a cycle of doubting, correcting, and improving, to a new altitude.

第二篇ISSUE,写作+修改用了一下午,先谢谢你啦joyce~~~
ISSUE99
"In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

      4.总结

While the pragmatic behavior gives people power to run quickly, idealistic views equipped them with a pair of wings. Since then, they can have another huge field to explore.

Admittedly, pragmatic behavior makes you step out of your dream. They encourage persons to be more realistic. Recently years in our university, large amounts of students are wondering on the internet or have nothing to do all the year round. What they usually say, just like my friend Jin, live with me in a dormitory, is "so bored today". Jin have many dreams such as read a specific amounts of books, Go to some other countries in his collage time, but he never make any change in a practice, all the thing he do every day is surfing on the internet and done the home work given by our professors. For three years, only with dream in mouth but not in practice, he still live a life with only things in emergency or things to waste time. All he need is pragmatic behavior, known as the first step to success, to achieve his first goal, and so as to many other persons short of action.

However important pragmatic behavior is, it will not be regarded as the only way to success, whereas idealistic view can be seen as an indispensible factor in contribute to one's achievement, together with some other things for example, opportunity, standard of ability, and ones perseverance.

To make an artwork is not a familiar task. Just take drawing for example. It requires the artist made a mode in his/her mind ahead of time, knowing the emotion the work will express, and then he/she can take the first practice on the paper. If the artist cannot become an idealistic person at first step, it's hard to indicate whether he could make any good artwork, and certainly all he does can only result in industry product or just a mass of color rather than real art. What a pragmatic behavior gives us is limited to strategy to go ahead and power to persist, the direction and blueprint of our future only can be provided only with the assistance of our ideal opinions. Simply a host of practice could hardly achieve a whole success. Thus, pragmatic behavior should not instead the idealistic view to guarantee the point of success.

When it comes to academic and business, same conclusion can be introduced to other fields in our life. Common sense tells us either idealistic view or pragmatic behavior cannot be missed in achieving a goal.

Success is a combined progress with one's ideal thinking and behavior. In social work, you should take a skeptic view and make your own image to start work with less loophole; likewise in business realm, you'd better draws a beautiful future to all your stuffs in order to inspire them; Same can be found in political field, politicians always assure to his supporters the future image of their good life. They all made ideal views closely to their objective with pragmatic behaviors well complied, as it ultimately arrive success. Above all, it's equal important to view both the ideal side of one's view and the pragmatic behavior of him/her.

In brief, though essential to see the pros in pragmatic behavior, without idealist view, human can only do non-intelligent work as robots.

ISSUE235"Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty--whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution--is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."

There’s no denying that loyalty has caused destructive consequences, insofar as it describes at least an element of the so many results that loyalty can make, but what is a matter of the debate is that whether we should make a conclusion that loyalty is more devastating than contributing just for it can make things bad. Upon further reflection it becomes apparent that we should not. In other words, I do agree the ostensible notion that loyalty has bad affect on things. Yet, strictly followed, I believe the comparison the speaker made also deserves careful consideration.
The speaker’s claim, at first glance, seems to be somewhat appealing and also finds ample empirical supports. Fascism aptly illustrate the bad effect of loyalty. German citizenry, which were highly civilized and do so many great contribute to advance the world, in that period had too much undue loyalty to Hitler to come to an aggressive ethnic and bring other country in the world including themselves a disaster. Undue loyalty to social cliques also lends credence to the wicked point of loyalty. Whether in school or in the society , the guys in the cliques , for the inordinate loyalty , use abusive words or behave brutally to the people outside the clinques.
However, firmly believing loyalty be more destructive is also an exclusive one would pose certain problems, which might outweigh the facts, noted above.
Aside from the provisos mentioned above, we should reevaluate or to clarify what good does loyalty do to us? In this very notion lies my first contention with the speaker, who illogically presumes with confidence that loyalty is more destructive. Generally speaking , then, undue attention to the bad effects made by loyalty tends to obscure the relationship between goodness and loyalty with which loyalty be tempered by other virtue, such as fairness, tolerance, and respect is chiefly concerned. One needs look no further than the loyalty between the spouses to observe the contribution made by it. The spouses need a trust to live together and endure or small or big stuffs happening in everyday life. Loyalty is part-and-parcel of the trust, serving to underscore the point that loyalty is so crucial and good to marriage and such exclusive relationships.
An even more striking example of advantage of loyalty is the mutual loyalty between a sovereign state and its citizenry. Without the basic relation, there can be no security or safety when war or invasion arrives. The world would in a mass or devolve into a despotic state ordered by brute force. We find ourselves on a slippery toward do loyalty to others and having others do same. Reflecting on the relationships between friends, families, and beholding the faith, makes clear that loyalty is necessary in our life. Is loyalty do more passive than positive? Emphatically, no. The statement brings immediately to mind that with the mutual loyalty in the employment relationship, without which job conflict would run pervasive that do a lot harm to the productivity and the social economic condition. Implicit implication behind the statement is the rationale that loyalty can enhance the cohesion power of system, broadening the individual’s sense of belong to system to grow more strength. Otherwise, people will not trust in each other, collective activity will not proceed and the society will go to chaios.
Considerable though the merits that loyalty do harm, people should never ignore the great contribution also made by loyalty and the necessity of its existing.
With respect to all the problems discussed above, I agree that the speaker’s clam that loyalty is more destructive than positive begs the question, notwithstanding the fact that how much good loyalty do for us. In the final analysis, loyalty, creating a trust bond between people, plays a very important role in our lives. I would be hard pressed to identify loyalty could be more damageable only when it is overextended.
